Geocaching Podcast: From Behind The Scenes - EPISODE 197 - Geowoodstock 2011

Co-Host HeadHardHat
I had so much fun last night with it being my official first time as co-host on the Geocaching Podcast and I want to say right off the bat THANK YOU for all the well wishes and for the large amount of people who were there with us in the LIVE chat room. I have to admit I was really happy to see the turn out and it made me feel so much better knowing you were there.

Tonights episode was discussing GeoWoodstock 2011 and our guest speaker was Wes (KCEPen). Lead hosts XpunkX, Darrylw4 and I were in attendance. I won't go into the details too much here but Wes knew his stuff and gave some really great insights for anyone wanting to attend either for the first time or the GeoWoodstock experienced as well.

What I will tell you is there are some amazing price packages for us this year. This is including items that is not just your average swag but items that you will want to have for genuine keepsakes. I know which package I will be going for. Oh and after the show I was able to talk to Wes a little more and one of the things that actually wasn't covered was the final registration days. I HIGHLY recommend that you register sooner rather than later. In fact you want to be registered before June 1st because registration closes a month before the actual events.

Okay I don't want to let anything slip so go and listen to the show for yourself.... Can't stand it... must tell... doh... There is one item available in most of the packages that is going to be done for the first time EVER at a Geowoodstock and it is a really cool ..................................................

We are sorry but the transmission to this blog post has been interupted. To learn all the Geowoodstock IX information be sure to listen to Episode 197 at the Geocaching Podcast website or where all the fine podcast establishments reside. http://geocachingpodcast.com/

You can hear HeadHardHat and the rest of the Geocaching gang each and every week on the Geocaching Podcast. Hear us record live 9:30 PM EST via talkshoe. Go to http://geocachingpodcast.com/ for more details.

Let The Geocaching Fun Begin

I cannot tell you how excited I am starting my new job. The fun, the excitement and all the new adventures that await me... and that's just the geocaching during lunch!

Now don't get me wrong I am so much loving my new work place and the challenges it will present to me. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work again in IT. What I am also pumped about is the geocache saturation here. There are hundreds of geocaches within only a few miles and it is one of the major hotspots in the state - W00t!

So I will be starting my Geocaching Find Of The Day again most likely next week. So stay tuned and see you out on the trails.

It's Spring! Working On Some New Geocaches

Yes indeedy, with the temps climbing and the warm weather finally here (okay, down in Raleigh anyways). The geocaching bug is really starting to bite. Time to get those geocaches ready to go out and be deployed into the wild. For me personally I have been working on three different geocaches in the past few days and wanted to share with you how they are going. Check them out...

Military Grade Geocache
First off is a really easy and yet slightly unusual geocache. It is a military powder container. Made of a cast aluminum (I think). This very waterproof container is the size of a very large canning jar with screw down butterfly latches to help keep things in place. I would imagine since it was made for holding different military grade powders that it should be able to keep all the trinkets inside nice and safe.

Here you can see it with the primer paint already in place and I am just starting to figure how I want to camouflage  it up a bit. The final product will be something that will blend in well with a wooded area.

I have a sneeky suspicion that this one will be hidden up in a tree somewhere. It is heavy enough for easy movement and will make a fun hide depending how I hide the rope.

A Work In Progress
Next is an even more unusual geocache that is not yet completed but will soon be. It also is made of something that I found in an Army Surplus Store.

I am not going to tell everything about this one because I am going to make a rather cool GeoSnippits video out of it and don't want to give away the big twist and final result. What I can say is it is going to be very unique and would make a great project for the kids as well. So stay tuned.

Well that's all for now.. what?  Oh my third project that I mentioned... right. That one is really top secret and will blow your mind. I was given the challenge of coming up with a good camouflage idea for a regular sized geocache. I actually have two ideas I am working on. I am sure you are going to love them once I actually complete them that is. Will definitely be future GeoSnippits videos for sure.. So keep checking in. They will be out soon - promise.

Geocaching 12 of 12: March 12, 2011 - HeadHardHat's Day

Morgan aka THR finding a really cool geocache

The Geocaching 12 of 12 is a picture book of geocachers all around the world. On March 12th, 2011 geocachers took tons of photographs while out doing what we do best - geocaching. Now not all photos have to be geocaching related but it is the main theme of this event. Once all the photos of the day have been taken the top 12 favorite shots are chosen and then uploaded to ones favorite online photo repository. Usually sites like Flikr, Picasa, Facebook, etc. are used. If you would like to learn more about the Geocaching 12 of 12 you can look at the official website here: http://www.geocaching12of12.com/

Even though my daughter Geoness wasn't able to come geocaching with us this time as she had important things to do herself. She was in a competition for her High School ROTC Raiders and on their B Team. I am very proud of her.

My Geocaching 12 of 12 was amazing and today I was accompanied by Mary and her son Morgan. Because both of them are novice geocachers I decided to take them to the Garner area which has some good saturated areas to look. Through the day we found some really great hides and I even took a walk on the wild side by 'going out on a limb' to obtain a long waited smiley. Below is a slide show of our adventures. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as we did experiencing them.

Solving A Puzzle Geocache - Bring on the Android Apps.

It was an amazingly nice spring day recently and as I was finishing my lunch I sorted over some of the geocaches that were relatively close to me. For whatever reason a puzzle cache series caught my eye. There were three in total and all with the same first name. For example lets call these geocaches Geoseries #1, Geoseries #2 and Geoseries #3.

Geoseries#3 was a puzzle geocache and to resolve it you had to find the first two and somehow come up with the final coordinates. This sounded like fun and a great way to spend a few hours geocaching. What I did not realize at the time was all the tools that I would need to get through the series. Fortunately for me I already had them on my Android phone. Let me show you how.

Geoseries#1 was a traditional geocache. The terrain was pretty rough with the amount of thick briers one had to go through to get to it. Yet once I did the find itself was pretty straight forward. To do my geocaching on the fly I used my Android phone and a Geocaching Application. There are several out there and many really well done ones are free. If you are a GroundSpeak die hard you can pay your $10.00 for their geocaching application. I will be doing a complete review of the GroundSpeak App in the not too distant future. The point is, if you do not have your GPSr with you, having a geocaching application on your phone is a sweet way to go.

Once I found Geoseries#1 I was given instructions on what I needed to do next. The OP set up a "target" for me to find and some coordinates to get there. In this case there was a sign with some words on it. After a short drive and search I was able to write down those specific words for use later.  To save the words exactly I used my Smart Phone Camera. Cameras are pretty much a staple on just about any mobile phone out there and with the afford-ability of SD cards for storage we can take thousands of photographs. This is also a really nice tool to have with you while geocaching.

Geoseries #2 was done the same way as Geoseries #1. Inside was another set of coordinates and another target to find. Again I took pictures of everything including the clue cards which gave the instructions. I did not want to have to come back through these dense brier patches.

With all the information now in my hands, err, camera. It was time to do some problem solving. What needed to be done initially was the words found on the signs were to be converted to numerics. To do that was a simple conversion where a letter needed to be substituted with a number. For example, A=1, B=2, Z=26. Now I could have taken the time to write all 26 letter-number combinations but I happened to have GCC: Geocache Calculator on my phone. This app has over 80 different encryption decoders at your fingertips with one of them being this format. All I had to do was plug in the words found earlier and I instantly had the numbers that I needed.

Finally all was needed was to take the numerics I had just decrypted and compute a mathematic formula which was in the description of the geocache itself. Again using a geocaching app to verify everything was great and to do the computations I had my handy dandy phone Calculator. The next thing you know I had the coordinates for the final geocache but was my conclusions correct? In this particular case the only way to know that was to go and find the final geocache. Luckily for me I was correct and my prize was waiting for me. There is however a really cool geocaching validator available called Geochecker. What geochecker allows is for the geocacher to put in the correct answer to the puzzle which in this case is the coordinates and see if you are correct BEFORE actually taking the chance at being incorrect.

So there you have it. A really sweet puzzle cache series that needed a series of tools now easily found right on your smart phone. Now does this mean you have to have a smart phone to go geocaching? Not at all, just remember that if you do attempt puzzle caches that you may need to bring some other ways of resolving them as you go geocaching...

See you out on the trails...

GeoSnippits Geocaching Videos: Photography and Geocaching

Let's face it, geocachers absolutely love taking snap shots while they are out geocaching. As Sonny from Podcacher Podcast recently said on March's edition of the Cacher's of the Round Table podcast. That we love to tell stories of our geocaching adventures and photography allows us to do that. We take tons of pictures because we can show others what it is like as we go from geocache to geocache what it looks like. Plus all the amazing sites we never even knew were there along the way. Then you can include all the amazing geocaches themselves and how proud we are when we make that very cool find. We want to document it all.

This GeoSnippits video discusses the very basics of photography and what you might like to take with you while geocaching. We will be making a more advanced video soon.

Enjoy and be sure to email me some of your favorite geocaching moments. We may put them up on our blog. Send them to headhardhat@gmail.com

Geocaching 12 of 12 This Saturday

Taken at my last Geocaching 12 of 12 adventure

Hey Gang,

Just a quick reminder that this Saturday is the first of two Geocaching 12 of 12 events. Time to get those cameras ready for action.

A Geocaching 12 of 12 is where you go out on Saturday, March 12, 2011 (also Nov. 12, 20111) and take a ton of photographs of your day. Then you pick the best 12 and upload them to your favorite online site like Picasa, Flikr, etc. for all the world to enjoy.

Here is a link to an earlier post with all the details:

Sharing Geocaching With Someone You Know... Priceless.

It doesn't matter if you are going out with friends, family or acquaintances. Geocaching is a perfect excuse for some real time fun for everybody. Yesterday Geoness and I took out Mary and her son Morgan (TheHumanRevealer) plus Mary's good friend Jennifer and her two kids Taylor and Chase for some local geocaching. We only had a few hours so I decided to find a handful of geocaches in and around a botanical preserve which features a really nice two mile hike through a wooded area. It turned out to be a really good choice.

This geocache goes was hidden in August 2002
One of the first geocaches on the list was an oldie but a goody. It had been hidden in August of 2002 with permission of the land owners. As you can see the word 'Hidden' being a very loose based term. Note the padlock on the right side. You either had to retrieve the numeric answer for the padlock from the establishment nearby or look for a clue in the description itself and open the geocache. I don't know but I thought that would have made this a puzzle cache. Either way we quickly had it open and was signing the log book. The really neat thing as well was it had the original log book from 2002 inside and some of the logs were really a cool thing to read about it. They kept it in a separate baggie but completely accessible and worth a look see.  After everyone had a good gander and explanation of all the things inside we headed off to our next destination.

Even though Spring is in it's very early stage here in North Carolina (the daffodils are just starting to bloom) this wooded area within the botanical preserve featured an amazing two mile trail to explore. Our first of several geocaches here unfortunately turned out to be a DNF (Did Not Find). What we were looking for was a bison tube in a very specific area. One of those "It's in a BLANK and only BLANK feet from the BLANK". Now I am sure back in 2002 when this geocache was placed there were plenty of BLANKs but today there were only a couple of scrawny BLANKs and we did not see said any sign of the bison tube. Ah well you can't win them all. On to the next one.

Geoness (in black) looks on while THR signs the log
After walking about half a mile we came up to the next hide and everyone made quick work of it. The excitement was electrifying once the yelp of "Found IT!" was heard. Everybody scrambled around checking the contents of the geocache and patiently waiting to sign the log. There is something about the validation of putting your signature in a log book that makes one go "Ha - Told you I was there :)".

Geoness (in black)  explaining some geocaching insights
There was several things that I really enjoyed while out today with the group. It wasn't about the numbers because I knew we were going to take things really slow so everyone could fully experience geocaching as it was meant to be. To see the anticipation of the hunt and the excitement of the find in the faces of everyone is indeed priceless. The really cool part for me personally is that Mary and Jennifer are both 5th grade teachers. So not only did I get to see them with their geocaching hats on during the hunt but all the nuances of the trail were pointed out. Things like what mostly caused this particular river to meander in a certain direction or why the boulders in the area were the way they where positioned. Things that unless you had that type of knowledge you would most likely glance right over. Again another reason why geocaching is so much fun. Because there is so much that can be learned if one just stops for a moment to look. Priceless.

Everyone taking a quick break during the hike
With the sun slowly going down we continued our journey and found a few more geocaches en-route. Each presenting itself in a unique way and providing a challenge to our geocaching explorers. I was very proud of Geoness who led everyone via the trails and our handy dandy GPS unit. One of the things we had shown right when we started was the importance of marking where the car was and turning on tracking to see where we had been. Geoness used that to make sure we were going on the right trail and going in the right direction.

After our quest had been completed it was time for heading home and grilling some burgers, making potato salad, deviled eggs and all the fixings for a fantastic dinner. This by far was one of the most enjoyable days I have had in a long time. Great fun with family, friends and of course geocaching.

There be blue in those pine needles
I highly recommend that you plan a geocaching outing sometime in the near future as well. You will so be glad that you did.

Taking Friends and Family Out For Some Geocaching Fun.

We had some real outdoor geocaching fun today. This included a nice two mile hike in a botanical preserve. We started with a rather unique geocache that was actually padlocked and you had to answer a question correctly to get the combination. It was a great first example of an easy geocache for these beginners. More to this story when I get home. Stay tuned.

Sometimes It Pays To Look Before You Bushwack

Geocaching can bring all sorts of adventure into your life. Every time we go after one we never really know what we are getting into until we reach ground zero. Like today for example. I went for a D2/T2 geocache of regular size. No problem thinks I until the navigation GPS takes me into a subdivision of houses. Anytime I have to go geocaching in a residential area the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I usually feel really uncomfortable stomping around someones neighborhood permission or not.

Signs of caution indeed.
This time though I ended up stopping at the far end of a subdivision where the road ended and three red diamonds were there to greet me. I felt a little better with this because the geocache appeared about 150 feet away into the woods. So off I went in search of my find. Unfortunately I quickly came upon several really interesting obstacles. For one a really intense briar patch that went on without end. Not those little scraggly ones that tears at your ankles but those tall bushes that have 1/4 inch thorns and shoot up 20 feet into the trees. Oh this was not going to be fun at all. After considering the amount of pain I was going to inflict upon myself  I figured I would give it a go anyways. After a short distance later I then came upon a rather nice creek that had running water going through. Great, this is a bit much for a difficulty 2 geocache. Am I in the right spot to get to this particular geocache?

Going from the subdivision was not the best route.
After pulling up the map of the area and then switching to satellite mode I quickly realized that I was not. Even though the geocache was less than a few hundred feet away there was a better way. So instead of trying to make my way through razor sharp briers from the south I would drive around the block and attack it from the north. It was my hope that the path would be a little easier to reach ground zero and it looked about the same distance either way. So off I drove.

A better trail to follow.

As you can see here the path was oh so much easier than my original plan. There was only a few briers and yes even a smaller creek to cross here but overall I would much prefer this way of hiking to ground zero. My troubles were not over though. According to the logs another geocacher had difficulty trying to find this particular geocache because the coords were a bit off. A bit being about 40 feet. So needless to say with a lot of potential hiding spots and those wonderful briers in the area it still took me a while to find the geocache.

The geocache find..
The morale of the story today kids is you do not ALWAYS have to find the path of greatest resistance when geocaching. Even though that tends to be my normal trek. If there is the most painful, difficult and longest way to a geocache I usually find it. Yet if is seems your path is more trouble than the difficulty suggests. Try looking at your location via your satellite view. Sometime like today it may reveal a better way for you to go. This will also reduce the amount of time salving yourself up with antiseptic cream from all the briers. Ouchie...

Very Cool Geocaching Tool - GCC - Geocaching Calculator

GCC - Geocaching Calculator
I always love hearing about useful and fun applications that can be used in the field while geocaching. I was given privey about this one from some of our fellow geocachers in the NCGO. I suggest you check out this Android phone app known as GCC - Geocaching Calculator.

What is so cool about this app? Glad you asked. What would you say to a utility that you can have in your hand at any time which allows you to encode and decode pretty much any encryption known on the planet? No kidding it has over 80 features and growing. You name the encryption and it does it.. Things like Morse code, ROT anything, Resister color codes, tons of stuff you may not have ever considered. For example, how about a code that comes from phone key pads, whoda thunk? Tons of converters as well like temps, coordinates, projectiles, etc.

You can get all the information about this amazing geocaching application including some really nice screen shots and feature definitions on their main web page.

I highly recommend this to be a "must have".

Enjoy.

SWEET - A FTF at a Travel Bug Hotel.

Okay the debate of geocaching and is it all about the numbers will continue as long as the activity exists. The other debate is of the importance of FTFs (First To Finds) is still a favorite with me. I am a FTF hound and freely admit it. There is an exhilaration that goes with that race to be first that keeps the game interesting for me. I don't know what gets my heart pumping more. The flight to ground zero, the need for a quick find or that final moment when you open up that log book to see those clean sheets. When everything clicks there is nothing like it and when someone beats you to it the sting stays with you a bit even though you know it is all part of the game. Then there is that fun situation when multiple geocachers meet up at the same time. I do like those because we all know why we are there and it is always cool to meet up with fellow geocachers.

This geocache find was a travel bug hotel and I found this Homer TB very cool and will move him on shortly. Now it's time for some lunch and then edit more GeoSnippits videos. Until the next FTF comes along...

A Geocaching Film from Regrath, Germany

I love viewing geocaching films from around the world. It is so cool to see a glimpse of places I want to go geocaching myself. Here is an interesting YouTube video that was sent to me from a geocacher who goes by bb10films. It is from Regrath, Germany (near Cologne).  There is no vocals in this but it has some nice visuals and some really dramatic music. Give it a quick look see when you get a chance and thanks to bb10films for sending it to me.

Oh by the way I had some fun translating the verbiage in this video. I used Google to help. Have fun.
