Headhardhat's vLog - WWFM XII (2015) Great Thwacker Attack

Our flash mob this year utilized a 18 inch 2x4 foam known as The Thwacker. Each attendee was given at least one to be for the event and to keep.

In a nutshell the entire group was spit in two and placed in two lines facing each other. We practiced battle cries to intimidate each other and then the main Thwack Attack began. It was a glorious pillow fight like epic battle with everyone laughing and giving some very therapeutic THWACKS.

Wanna See Some Geocache Photos From Space?

My legs are torn up like I had a loosing fight with a box of razor blades but it was all worth it. I attended, videoed and bushwacked like never before when I attended todays: Geocache in Space "L.E.I.F." MMXII Launch Party! What an adventure I will not soon forget! Here are some of the highlights.

Scott aka E6C (Echo Six Charlie) with weather balloon.
Arrived at the correct coordinates for the LEIF Launch Party and found E6C filling up the weather balloon that would be used to propel the geocache, camera box, and tracker into low earth orbit for as long as the weather balloon would allow before coming back to Earth via parachute.

Andy HeadHardHat Smith just before takeoff
It was so exciting as countdown approached. I was also very pleased to meet fellow geocacher and good friend Dave DeBaeremaeker. Dave is a good friend of my TV show Geocaching World (RVNN.tv)

Dave (DeBear) and HeadHardHat at Event
Here you see the geocache just before takeoff. If you look closely you can spot the parachute just below the balloon, then the camera box with tracker and the very bottom is the small ammo box geocache.

10...9...8...7...6...5...  ...
Here is the money shot from low earth orbit. We don't have the actual information back yet as to how high the geocache went but we figure any where to 200,000 feet or higher. Will let you know once we find out.

A geocache with an alien's eye view of our wonderful Earth
Then came the painful part. Finding the geocache after it landed. We all took different routes looking for it. Mine in particular was bushwacking through .25 of a mile through extremely painful briars. Long story short my legs have been terribly razor bladed by thorns... Owie.. Even with the painful excursion we found the geocache intact and some breathtaking footage from way, way up there.

So after going through a major thunderstorm (trees and branches down everywhere) we managed to have an incredible adventure today. Will fill you in on all the details once we get them all and you will be seeing some really great videos coming out real soon. Not to mention I will be having Scott (E6C) on Geocaching World in the next few weeks.

Who said geocaching wasn't cool...?

Geocaching Event Breakdown: Which One Will YOU Hold Next?

Yes at the time of this posting the Fall leaves have worked past the peak of colors and you can still hear the sounds of acorns pinging off the tops of automobiles in the office parking lot. In the Northern Hemisphere anyway it is a time to reflect on the geocaching season and possibly what will be done next year. My question to you fellow geocacher is, "How about hosting a geocaching event?". If the thought of bringing a bunch of geocachers together for an event gives you chills or you just want to learn more about them read on. There is a lot of valuable information below.

What is a Geocaching event?
In the Geocaching World, a geocaching event is an opportunity to gather fellow geocachers together to share experiences, food, more geocaching and some common theme to bring everybody together in one place.

Why have a Geocaching event?
Geocaching is an incredibly social network of people. Geocachers all around the world have a common bond through geocaching which is universal. Cachers from other states and countries can feel immediately welcome at a geocaching event. It doesn't matter if you have ten finds, or ten thousand finds. Everybody has something to talk about when it comes to this amazing activity.

Are there different types of Geocaching events?
You betcha.

General Event Types

- Meet and Greet Geocaching Event - usually very informal and at a local watering hole. Meet and Greet events are meant to get a bunch of geocachers together for the first time to meet up and get to know each other. Many future geocaching activities are planned at these.

- Flash Mob Events - 15 minute limit and has a theme. Flash mobs are very creative and can sometimes get down right goofy. Imagine a spot in a public area where people are just wondering around minding their own business. Suddenly a whistle is blown and 50 geocachers don masks and hats, form a group photo, blow kazoos, everyone signs a log and within 15 minutes disperse as if nothing ever happened.  That is one of a zillion examples of a Flash Mob Event.

- CITO - Cache In Trash Out - The world is our game-board and we like to keep it clean. There can be a handful to hundreds at a CITO geocaching event. The idea is simple. Geocacher care about the environment. That is why you see a lot of us picking up trash while we geocache. The CITO event pops it up a knotch and gets geocachers together a single place and cleans up an entire area. Places like parks, forests, urban areas, parking lots, you name it and everybody pitches in to do their part for the environment.

- Standard Event - can have a handful to hundreds of geocachers. This is your standard type of geocaching event where anything and everything geocaching can happen.
 - Milestone achievements
 - Calendar Ex. 11-11-11
 - Yearly events - annual geocaching events
 -  Like we need a reason, let's get together.

Is it difficult to host a Geocaching event?
Not at all. Yeah sure the bigger more elaborate ones require much more preparation but a standard Meet and Greet only needs a place to meet up, preferably some food and libations and a bunch of geocachers. That's about it. If you want to do something bigger and more active I suggest you talk with other geocachers who have already held geocaching events and get ideas and information from them.

What goes on at Geocaching events?
Everything Geocaching! BBQs, Auctions, Geocoin/Pathtag trade-offs, Contests, Activities, Geocaching Hunts, Games, Hiking, Adventures, Educational classes and so much more.

What does it take to setup a Geocaching event?
Registering your event on geocaching.com, understanding what it takes to put on a successful party, the right amount of people to setup and host the event and enough people to clean up afterwards. Do you homework first and know what you are getting into but once you host your first. There really isn't much to it.

Geocachers look forward to several things when attending a Geocaching event.
- Food
- Places to find Geocaches
- Talking about Geocaching
- Trackables
- Some themed activities to accomplish
     For Example:
       Silent Auction
       Trackables Trade-off
       Pre-planned geocache hunt
       Painting Geocaches for the kids
       Group/family activities and games
       Geocaching classes
       Geocaching in the area

Planning / hosting a successful Geocaching event
Here are some more helpful suggestions:

- Have a defined purpose. Even if it is a meet and greet.
- Select a location that is geocache rich.
- Have at an area where food is provided or available
- Know how many are coming and be prepared.
- Geocaching activities are important
- Give a ways are great
- Getting the local community involved if possible
- Reserve location space if a larger event - park, building, etc.
- Contact local Geocaching groups to help with event ideas and doing the event itself.

Well that about wraps it up. I hope you found some valuable information from this post and consider hosting your very own geocaching event very soon.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Ep. #912 - Geocaching Events Breakdown

Last night's episode of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) was on Tuesday instead of our usual Thursdays due to the holiday season and some schedule changes. Even though we recorded LIVE on a different night the chat room still was hopping with people and I think we were actually close to breaking an occupancy record. Very cool and you really have to be in there chatting away to really appreciate all the information and conversations that goes on during the show. So you just have to be there to know what we mean. What are you waiting for?

The best way to help people understand a concept is to demonstrate it. Courtney Wallin and I discussed what geocaching events are, what you can do at them and how to set one up.

Courtney Wallin

This was Courtney's first time being co-host during Geocaching World instead of behind the studio production boards and she did a terrific job. I really think that since she has been with us from the start and even has found some recent geocaches that she will make a great addition to the show. I know the chat room has given her a very friendly geocacher welcome. I very much look forward to working with her as well. Now if we can get Managing Director Andy McCaskey more comfortable with production.... but that is another story <jk>.  Andy did great even though we had to restart the intro of the show three times.  All part of the fun when doing live recordings. I was very impressed with Andy of his switching abilities. We had a lot of photos and videos sprinkled through the whole show and he didn't miss a beat. Thanks Andy!

This week's episode discussed everything you wanted to know about geocaching events. From Meet and Greets, Flash Mobs and CITO events to the Megas. The idea was to hopefully plant the idea into our viewers that next year when the weather gets nice that maybe they could host a geocaching event and it really isn't all that difficult to do.

We broke down all the different types of geocaching events out there and why we have them. Then we went into great detail of the different aspects, activities and considerations that would go into hosting your own event. We had lots of interaction with our world wide chat room. Tons of comments and suggestions came from there and we used in the show. Thank You Chat-Room. For all the incredibly great info you are going to have to see the entire episode for yourself. It should be out within a couple of days of this posting.

The prizes from our Geocaching World Cache Stash were nice indeed. One was from our friends at CoinsAndPins.com which was a 250 Finds Geo-Achievement Patch. The second was an unactivated Cache-A-Maniacs geocoin. The questions were pretty easy this week. Hey it is the holiday season.

All of our released Geocaching World episodes are available in iTunes and on the RVNN.tv website but if you did not make it to the live recording you can see it when it is released soonly.

Usually Geocaching World is recorded LIVE each and every week on Thursday at 6:30pm EST. ***SPECIAL NOTE*** For the week November 20th we will be recording on TUESDAY the 22nd!

We meet up in the chat room here: www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live.

If you are a company who would like to participate with our Geocaching World Cache Stash Sponsorship Program and donate prizes for our show please email geocache@rvnn.tv for more details.

See you next week.

GeoWoodstock IX - What Happened With The Streaming???

Okay, so here's the scoop on what happened at Geowoodstock IX and why we couldn't get much information out.

You see there were these three aliens see and they were amused at all these people having fun out in the middle of nowhere. So the one alien says to the other....

Ummm, no.

The truth is we really don't know what happened. There was a huge truck/platform there which was supposed to have the WI-FI up and running Friday night. It was supposed to be so good that we were going to be able to stream live pretty much all day. W00T!

Depending on who you talk to the company responsible either couldn't get it working, maybe some components were stolen, who knows!?! The end result was we had no WI-FI and no phone tower. The one that was nearby was so overwhelmed by all the people attending it was pretty much useless. I know I couldn't even get a tweet out that day. So there you go. Sorry for getting your hopes up and not delivering but sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men...

Did record a lot of goodies and will be sending that to you over the next few days. Stay Tuned!

And The Winner of the HHH's Great GPSr Experiment Flash Mob Is....

Everybody getting ready to start our Flash Mob geocaching event.
HeadHardHats's Great GPSr Experiment Flash Mob (GC2GM3X)

First off I want to thank everyone who attended yesterdays Flash Mob geocaching event hosted by Geoness and myself. We personally had a blast meeting up with everybody including a bunch of new geocachers where this was their first event ever. Way Cool!

Over all we had about 25 geocachers in attendance and tested over 30 different GPSr units. What I liked about this test was these were GPSr units that are used each and everyday by actual geocachers. So in my opinion this is as real as it get when it comes to in the field testing. Our Flash Mob geocaching event was held with a perfect blue sky in an open field. Couldn't ask for better testing weather.

Observe the rarely photographed GPS Two Step In Action
Before actually marking our flags and in true Flash Mob tradition everyone participated in doing the GPS Two Step and calibrated our units to peek performance. It was really fun to participate in this rarely photographed ritual and we caught it all on film and will be featured in a upcoming GeoSnippits video.

After everybody's eye balls stopped spinning it was time to get an assigned flag and start the GPSr experiment itself.

Right from the beginning a pattern started to form around Ground Zero
In no time you could see where the spread of potential ground zero markings was forming a pattern. We had a good selection of GPSr devices from hand helds, smart phones and even automobile units being tested.

The most common GPSr unit tested was the Garmin 60CSx. As for the smart phone side we had several different models and applications being used.

Here is the percentages of GPSr brands used:
Garmin       70.97%
Motorola      9.68%
Delorme       6.45%
Blackberry   3.23%
Iphone          3.23%
Magellan      3.23%
Samsung      3.23%

Geoness and HeadHardHat gathering the flag data
At the very end of the Flash Mob we handed out a bunch of prizes which included some free lanyards and some of my HHH and GeoSnippits pathtags.

Before we knew it the Flash Mob was over and everyone  broke off to do either some more geocaching in the park or to follow some other adventures of the day.

When all was said and done it was time for Geoness and I to start collecting the data. We marked ground zero and set marking tape to visually give a grid that I could easily duplicate on my graph paper. We used a measuring line that was marked every five feet to get our bearings and record each flag as we passed by. After a whole lot of circles and marking of information we finally recorded them all.

This shows how many GPSr units fell on the grid.

We will show exactly which GPSr unit and exactly who did well or not in another upcoming post.. Be sure to check regularly to see the interesting results.

As part of the Flash Mob event the person who was found to be closest to ground zero would win the event prize. This geocacher would be a featured in a GeoSnippits Video for both You Tube and to be seen on Michigan Magazine TV (RFDTV Network).

And The Winner Is....

Mike Huska (Mhuska)
Mike was using a Garmin 60CSx and was less than one foot from ground zero.

Congratulations Mike for winning our Great GPSr Experiment Flash Mob Event. Everyone will be seeing you soon on GeoSnippits!

Mike Huska (Mhuska) our Flash Mob GPSr Winner

UPDATE:
You can now see all the stats as to which unit fell where at this link:

HHH to Speak at Toledo-Lucas County Public Library

I am so excited to be speaking at a very special geocaching event (GC24Y1G) at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library tomorrow.

The really cool thing is that I will be doing it from the comfort of my home computer system. Yep I'm Skyping this one in. Due to some scheduling conflicts I unfortunately can't be there in person so this was the next best thing.

The event itself is promoting geocaching as a whole and also is doing something that no other public library has ever done before. Somewhere in the 18+ public libraries within their system are hidden geocaches. That's correct they are hidden on the shelves of the library and actually cataloged. To find them you use coordinates of a different sort. You use the Dewey Decimal system. The concept is actually very unique. Simply go to geocaching.com and get the DD coords and then find that section in the library to start your hunt. I have seen one example where thy have hollowed out a book which will hold the geocache. Very clever. I don't want to give everything away so you are going to have to come on down to one of the participating libraries to get all the details.

For more information about the event itself, the geocaching series inside the libraries and all the other geocaching goodness please check out the links provided below. Otherwise I look forward to speaking with you in Toledo!

Special note: I want to thank Dave Misko who is their Systems Engineer/Supervisor who invited me to this wonderful event and put in a whole lot of time getting everything in place. Kudos Dave!

Here is the geocaching.com posting of the event:

Here's a short blurb on Toledo's Channel 11 News website telling about it.

Cachercon 2010: An Amazing Geocaching Event

Right off the bat I would like to personally thank the Motor City Cache Machine, DarrylW4 and Firefly03 for inviting me to participate in Cachercon 2010 Metro Detroit. This was an amazing geocaching teaching event that I had the pleasure of speaking at. It was held at a Holiday Inn in Troy, Michigan.

This was an all day event which included presentations on GSAK, Earthcaches, Paperless Geocaching and so much more. I personally did a lecture on Geocaching in the Media.
The atmosphere of the entire event was very relaxed and the geocachers were free to wonder into any session that interested them, lounge in the spacious chat area or venture out into the frozen tundra of Michigan to find nearby geocaches. I witnessed many discussing stories of past finds or even trading pathtags which seems to be quite the collectors item lately. I myself was able to trade a few dozen with others.

The pace of Cachercon was enjoyable to say the very least. Between each set a GeoSnippits Geocaching Tutorial Video was shown and seemed to be quite the talk amongst the viewers. It broke things up and the whole day flew by in one continuous whoosh.

The other really cool aspect was the use of two screens for everyone to watch through the entire event. Of particular interest was a screen saver that showed live Tweets on the screens. Any one that had the word Cachercon was fair game and displayed. It really was mesmerizing to observe.

The very first activity was a LIVE broadcast from the Geocaching Podcast crew. DarrylW4 and XpunkX gave a great performance as usual hitting many of the hot topics in the geocaching world and answering questions from the audience as well. It was a real treat being able to finally meet them after listening to their Geocaching Podcast for so long.

Below are some photos of the rest of the speakers as well:

Rattrak giving a very impressive talk about Earthcaches.

XpunkX giving a presentation about GSAK functionality.

Geoaddict discussed the pros and benefits to paperless geocaching.

South Lyon Trekkers showed how to make custom mappings for some of your Garmin GPS units.

Team Memila showed the possibilities of using Iphones while Geocaching.

Gsix5666 displayed several different types of geocaches then discussed the pros and cons of using different containers while geocaching.

The Conman gave an in depth presentation on how to play a different form of geocaching known as Wherigo.

Then it was time for me (HeadHardHat) to take the stage and talk about Geocaching in the Media. I had a great time with the audience and everybody seemed receptive to this sometimes touchy discussion.

At the end of the session I did a history making announcement that put the crowd into a frenzy. Yes believe it or not in September of 2010 yours truly will have his own geocaching based TV show!
More details to come in another post!!!

Finally two geocaching reviewers (DeRock and Tiki)came up and really had a good time explaining why and how geocaches get authorized and sometimes not. Plus helpful hints on what you need to do to speed up the process.

The day went by way too fast and after reading many of the reviews turned in. This mini-mega event was very much enjoyed and most everybody can't wait for it to come back again next year. Until then...

GeoSnippits Shown In The Art of Geocaching Event - West Midlands, United Kingdom

On Saturday October 17th, 2009 our very own GeoSnippits Videos are going to be part of a very special Geocaching Event. It is known as The Art of Geocaching (GX1X98A) That would be in West Midlands, United Kingdom. Just north of Worcester, UK.

Hosted by Tavisman the geocaching webpage states:

This is a 'meet-and-greet' event is a slight twist. This is the 'Art of Geocaching' event, showcasing the creative and artistic talents used in Geocaching. The exhibits created for Geocaching by Geocachers young and old, from around the world.

I recently discussed how GeoSnippits was to be shown there and Tavisman told me that he has most of the GeoSnippits videos in hand and they will most likely be shown on a 32" monitor. Tavisman also said that they will get several photos and some video with people at the event and will send them to me. I of course will get them up on the blog.

Should be a jolly good show...
