HHH's GotD - DNF's Are Not A Bad Thing

Heading for hide number one = DNF

Okay I admit that I broke some of my own rules when it comes to lunchtime geocaching. One if you are on a lunch hour you really need to concentrate on the park and grabs. Meaning the 1.5/1.5 difficulty and terrains. You know the infamous LPC (Lamp Post Caches) aka Skirt Hides, that sort of thing. Geocaches that should take ten minutes tops so you can find and sign then get on to lunch. Today I went after yet another 2.5 geocache that I knew would take me a bit longer to get but still wanted to get out there and enjoy the springtime weather.

Heading for hide number two = FIND
So did I go after the geocache that was only 400 feet off one way of a nature trail? Oh no, I went for the 2.5 which was half a mile down the other way. So what happened? I ended up spending 25 minutes looking for a regular that was "next to a log" in an area of about 40 logs. Needless to say I had to give up on this one and try it again some other time.

A big old DNF (Did Not Find) for me. Some geocachers do not log DNFs for some reason. Maybe they feel it is a bad mark that some how haunts them. Others may feel it is a sign of poor geocaching abilities. I don't really understand the logic but the fact is a DNF actually is a great thing to log. One it gives you that incentive to give it another try or maybe sometimes several tries. Another reason DNFs are good is because the geocache owner gets notice that maybe the geocache may be missing. So take it from your friendly neighborhood HHH and be sure to mark your DNFs. Believe me when I say that no one else is watching and if they are they need a new hobby.

So after all that, what was the conclusion to today's adventure? After I DNF'd the first attempt I went for another geocache that was nearby and found that one. I don't always have that luxury but this time it was there and I took the chance for a find. Glad I did.

Now I have only a few minutes to hit a nearby drive thru.

HHH's Lunchtime GotD - Bushwack Geocache

This little guy was NOT your normal park and grab. Rather a 2.5/2.5 so I took the chance it would not take me too long.

It turned out to be a .10 bushwack in a semi-swampy woods. Took my hiking pole and handy pack with me. It's turning cold today and later tonight it's supposed to snow up to 10 inches. That's a lot for North Carolina. Anyway I am glad I found it because it was laying on the ground. I signed the log and put it back in it's apparent hidey hole.

Took me 20 minutes for this one so lunch was a bit rushed.

HHH's Lunchtime GotD - Pill Container / Bison Tube

This was a really nice park and grab lunchtime geocaching treat. It's a pill holder, just a little bigger than your standard bison tube.

What I really liked about this find was the very scenic pine woods you go thru to get to it. With the sun shining just so it was beautiful to just be there. Took some extra photos to remember it by. Bonus - Found a Quiznos on the way there. Love good sub shops.

Altoid Geocaches - Love'm or Not So Much

Found this guy today. Not too many around here anymore and there is a reason.

If you have ever found an Altoids container that is a year old or so and you will immediately know why most people dislike finding them. Sure in theory they are this seemingly air tight container that easily can be converted into a nice small geocache. Heck it might even be considered recycling because you are re-using it. Sadly, what happens most of the time is you find a rusting, damp hunk of metal that is usually very difficult to open and immediately makes you feel like getting a tetanus shot after handling. They are not water tight no matter how much you paint the outside and they become a maintenance nightmare after a very short amount of time. So if you take advice from one who finds them - don't use them. There are alternatives that work a whole lot better and you don't have to worry about a child or adult for that matter getting cut on the rusty edges.

While we are at it lets discuss pill bottles. Great idea at the time - okay it's a bad idea. You heard it here first, bad, bad, bad and bad. They are screen doors in a submarine at best and unless you really like your log books extra soggy don't turn them loose on the geocaching world. We would really appreciate it.
