My YouTube RANT

Andy HeadHardHat Smith of the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast

Should beggars be choosers?

I have a rant and I know that in "The Big Picture" of things in the YouTube world,  I am a teeny tiny fish in a really big ocean. I also know that the "service" YouTube provides is essentially free. With that being said I also provide content to YouTube and they gain advertising marketing off my shows even if it is comparatively small. So here is my gripe, let me know what you think.

On Thursday we recorded episode 021 of the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast. Everything went fairly swimmingly and the show went out as a videocast as usual - well almost. Our videocast includes our Pre-show, the show itself and the post show. We have a huge audience that absolutely loves the Pre-show and watches it faithfully. Two major things happened with that broadcast. First and the most upsetting to me is only the last 31 minutes of the show was rendered and put out as the show. That means the first hour was NOT included. Luckily it catches the meat of the content that discussed having an effective elevator speech about Geocaching but to lose an entire first hour of the show? I tried, I mean I tried getting in touch with anyone at YouTube/Google to fix this and I can't get a human. I tried their digital feedback routes and have not heard a thing. Is there no way to actually make contact?

Next a much smaller issue but not a whole lot less frustrating is how we are the beta testers to the OnAir hangouts. Every week we play the What's broken this week game, finding out usually mid show what functionality is going to hose up. This last week they added new functionality to remove the guest bar at the bottom of the hangout screen and you can either show it or not. I prefer it showing because Debaere and I make gestures and faces during the show. Even with the setting for the bar to be on it defaulted with having the bottom bar taken away. You can't tell when you are actually broadcasting so we didn't know until afterwards. Again a small thing but a series of smaller things effects a lot. Come on Guys beta test this stuff before sending it out to the masses. We rely on YouTube to get our content out and I don't think it is too much to ask to make sure this stuff works before making it go live. Being a QA engineer myself, this drives me insane.

I also really do not like the "We are so big we don't have to bother conversing with anyone",  attitude. You own the video world you can afford a decent tech support staff. Putting up a wall from everyone is not good business...

Okay, off the soapbox I'm getting more light headed than usual. Have you had issues with YouTube? What did you do to get them resolved or did they? Let me know.

Podcacher Podcast And GeoSnippits Interviews

All I can say is WOW! It is so great to be back in the video creation biz again. More correctly is it's so great to be back making GeoSnippits Videos again. The past few weeks have just flown by since GeoWoodstock XI and I am putting everything together in one spot when it comes to Debaere's and my fantastic meet up with Sonny and Sandy from the Podcacher Podcast. Check this out and we hope you enjoy the shows.

We start off with The Podcacher Podcast where Sonny and Sandy interview Debaere and Andy Headhardhat Smith during GeoWoodStock XI in Lakeland, FL. This is their entire show and they give great accounts both with us and the rest of their GWXI travels.  Also very cool is that they feature GeoSnippits in the title so I believe that means we now have officially "made it"  ;) , please be sure and give it a listen. You can hear it --> http://www.podcacher.com/2013/06/show-423-0-geosnippits-and-scga-store/

Next is the interview Debaere and I happily did of Sonny and Sandy. We had a blast and quiet frankly I am extremely pleased of the entire conversation with Team Podcacher. There are times with certain interviews when things feel made up or plastic. I can tell you the second all of us sat down through both interviews it was like we just sat down to play cards and just chat. Very relaxed, from the heart and you can see the expressions on their faces how much they care for each other, their family and their impact on the Geocaching community. You are not going to want to miss this GeoSnippits Geocaching Video Reboot episode

Finally if you have never attended a Geocaching Mega Event and want to learn some great Geocaching insights straight from Debaere and HHH right after they attended GeoWoodstock XI. Check out their latest episode of the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast. Episode 020: Surviving A Geocaching Mega Event Weekend.
You can watch the videocast here --> http://youtu.be/N2Qz2-pKzZo

We hope you enjoy our meet up with the Podcacher Podcast gang and be sure to check out their podcast at www.podcacher.com and our podcasts and Geocaching videos at www.geosnippits.com.  Thank you!

On Our Way Home

Debaere and I are on our way home from GeoWoodstock 11. Attempting to find a geocache in each of the next four states.

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Oh yes we did

Well that was absolutely interesting to do. Met up with some geocachers enjoying the sunshine. Took some interesting photographs. And met the geocache owner in his full glory on the way out. Definitely one of the more unique geocaching experiences that I've had in quite a while.

GeoWoodstock XI: Meeting Up With The Podcacher Gang - Sonny, Sandy and Sean

(LtoR - HHH, Sandy, Sonny, Debaere

Had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with Sonny and Sandy ( plus Sean) from the Podcacher Podcast today whilest attending the GeoWoodstock XI Mega Event. Not only did take a long awaited item off my bucket list, both Debaere and myself was able to share some of their time time during the afternoon.

We started out early in the morning just as GeoWoodstock XI when I noticed that the Podcacher gang were only a couple of booths down from Debaere and myself with our GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast booth. There was very little time for chit chat even though I had been waiting for years to finally meet Sonny and Sandy but the show mush go on and they had to scoot to the main stage area to put on a Q&A show. Then some weirdness happened. Dave and I also went down to the main stage area and found out with S&S that they did not have a microphone set up. In fact there was no PA system at all. YIKES! The compromise was a megaphone that they would have to speak loudly into with the hopes that their voices would carry. Not Good. That and the fact that the crowd did not fully know that their show was about to start. That's when yours truly stepped in and I did some crowd awareness HeadHardHat style. Next thing you know in a couple of minutes the stage area had a nice crowd and Sonny and Sandy were able to go on with their show.

After that we passed hither and yon during the day and mentioning that we needed to each do an interview with the other and that we were looking forward to it. Then 2pm came around and it was Debaere and myself's turn to take the stage. The show went well and we did some audience participation talking about different memorable aspects of geocaching. Debaere was a real champ with it being his first time up on stage like that. I was my usual Headhardhat self.

After our show had finished we all went back to work via our booths until later in the afternoon. Then both Sonny and Sandy came over to our booth and we had a really genuine nice time doing interviews with each other. You will have to take a listen on our shows to really get in the fun but we all had a great time doing them.

Then it was on to the final presentations for the day and it was time to say our good-byes. Again there are people in the media that are genuinely fun to be around and Sonny and Sandy are awesome examples of this. It takes a lot of work to promote one's show and still have time to meet up and converse with fellow podcasters. Sonny and Sandy all day were nothing but fun, professional and a pleasure to be around. I want to thank S,S and S for sharing our GeoWoodstock XI experience. It is not something I will quickly forget.

GeoWoodstock XI Preregistration

Here at the GeoWoodstock 11 pre-registration. There are lots of people here. The event goes on till 8 p.m. tonight and you have lots of opportunities to purchase different geocache swag including all your own geocoins, tags and different items. It is really a lot of fun meeting everybody.

It Be Hot Down Here in Florida

I'll tell you what I am going to be very glad when the temps drop down a little bit here in Florida. It's currently about 95 and about the same in humidity. Stopped off at a fast food restaurant and bumped into a couple of geocschers from Louisiana who also are heading for GeoWoodstock 11. Tonight is the preregistration event. Should be a relaxing fun.

First Geocaches in Georgia and Florida

Found my first geocaches in Georgia and now Florida with Dave. On to GeoWoodstock 11.

Another South Carolina Geocache

Almost to Georgia so Debaere and I stretched our legs by getting another geocache.

First Geocache Heading To Geowoodstock XI

First geocache found South Carolina just south of the border more to come.

Debaere and Headhardhat Going To Geowoodstock XI

GEOWOODSTOCK  XI or BUST: The GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast is on the road!

Yes, co-host Dave Debaere and myself (Headhardhat) will be some very busy geocachers over this Memorial Day weekend. For starters Dave is traveling from the west side of North Carolina and meeting up with me in Raleigh. We will finish packing my cache mobile and do our normal Thursday night live broadcast of the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast at 8:30pm ET. You can watch it live via our LIVE YouTube Stream at www.geosnippits.com. Join the Chatroom to converse with the show and geocachers around the world.  Anywho, once the broadcast is done we hit the sack - Dave gets a mattress in the Geosnippits studio, then it is time to get up at 4:30am and hitting the road.

Lakeland, Florida is about 10 hours drive so you know it will be more than that. We have a Pre-registration event sometime after 5 o'clock and so we will get to meet up with geocachers and get a feel for the place. On Saturday we have to be on the grounds around 8am and will be getting our booth setup. GeoWoodstock opens at 9am. There will be so much to do and you are more than welcome to stop by and say hi. Then at 2pm both Dave and I take the big stage and will be doing a question and answer session with everyone. Please come on by and enjoy the show. Bring those Geocaching questions you want to know.  This is going to be such a blast!

Then there will be all the events Dave has booked us to on Saturday and Sunday - holy cow we are going to be busy but it is not often we get to talk with so many fellow geocachers.

Monday we hit as many Geocaches as possible on the trip home. I am excited because I currently do not have any Geocaches in Georgia and Florida so I will be loving this.

If you have any suggestions for Dave and I for the stage show or while we are there please let us know.

See you at Geowoodstock XI
Headhardhat

Geocache First To Find

Wow my first FTF in quite a while. I was actually getting ready for going to Woodstock 11 and just happened to look at some geocaches that were near my house and decided to go and get this one. Even though this was not my favorite geocache container the pure tonnage of wild honeysuckle in the area was so amazingly cool to smell.

Even though I'm dodging afternoon showers, I just have the geocache bug and need to go get some more. If I find any that's interesting I'll put it up on my blog. Have a great day geocaching.

It is done, they are hidden.

Well it is done. I have finally placed all five of my geocaching series There Be Dragons Here into the wild.  The weather was gorgeous but a bit on the warm side with the temps near 90. It was well worth it though and I am now very relieved they are placed. So now all I have to do is wait for two of the geocaches to be reviewed and the series will be opened for geocachers to find.

These Dragons Mean Geocaching Business - Grrrr

I have been working so long on these guys I'm almost hesitant to put them out into the wild.

Yep they are stock full of swag have first to find Prizes and a really cool notebook, here we go.

My first multi listing geocaching series - There Be Dragons Here. Should be live by the weekend.

COORDS Are Final For My There Be Dragons Here Multi Listing Series - W00t!

Yes I am one happy geocaching hider. After all the work and investigation along a nearby greenway I finally have all of the coordinates in place for my geocaching series There Be Dragons Here.  So all of the ammo boxes are ready, filled with swag, FTF prizes, notebook and proper signage. The coordinates have been registered in the four listing services and just waiting final approval from two of the sites. The geocaches get hidden tomorrow and once all are approved I will officially publish them to be found. I am very excited and also interested if geocachers will just go for the ones on their listing site and ignore the rest or go for the whole series. I now have officially placed a hide on all the main services.

Will let you know when it is ready and the GC number for the first of the series. Good luck everyone and I hope you enjoy the quest.

It's The Munzees, Sorta

Actually the Smiths,  sorta. Just introduced fiance Amy to Munzees. We had some time to kill this evening and a bunch were nearby.  Picked up 12 of them so that puts Amy to level 3.

Had fun when getting dirty doing a geocache wouldn't do. Besides Amy was in high heels ;)
