Geocaching Quick Tips: Multi-Tools

If you are new to geocaching, one of the first items I would suggest to you to add to your "Must Have" list is a good multi-tool.

Why you may ask?

The answer is basic, you are going to need one at some point or another when geocaching. There are way too many examples to mention so I will bring up just a few.

Pliers  - for getting logs out of micro geocaches, opening stubborn bison tubes, grabbing geocaches you can't reach with your fingers, etc..
Scissors - for trimming new replacement logs.
Toothpic - log removal.
Tweezers - log removal, ticks, splinters.
Assorted tools - when needed
and it even has a knife or two.

If you are out and away from your geo-mobile and have a situation that requires just that certain something to fix or find a geocache. A well built multi-tool in your pocket or pack will save you a lot of unnecessary grief.

Oh and for the Swiss Army Knife people out there a Quick Tips is coming soon.

See you out on the trails.

Andy HHH Smith

Geocaching Quick Tips: Lanyards

Today's geocaching quick tip deals with an item that once used, you'll never want to go geocaching without one again. I am speaking in this case about the humble lanyard.

geoknots.com

Now normally a lanyard is used when you go to say a geocaching event. It is usually a cord of some type with a small closable hook and some plastic with a hole to hold your name tag. Simple and effective for holding an item that you do not want to carry around all day.

For geocaching you want something more heavy duty and I have found over time that this unique wearable is very effective holding items that you use each and every time you go out geocaching. It is a great alternative to pulling out your small geocaching pack every time you want to do a park and grab.

Think about it, depending on what you want to attach to your lanyard you will always have a pen with you plus have easy access to your most trusted tools of the trade. Best of all, you can even have a place to hang your GPS unit. No pack needed.

Lanyards can come with all sorts of custom attachments. Multiple clips means multiple items you can hook on and will be at your fingertips.

Sound interested?  Simply shop around for the one that fits your needs. There are tons of choices on the internet. Again, once you do start using a lanyard that works and feels best to you personally. You will wonder how you geocached without one.

See you out on the trails,

Andy HHH Smith

Lunchtime Geocache: Left Some Swag

Had a fun, yet longer than expected lunchtime search for todays geocache find. It was supposed to be a regular size so I thought it would be a quick smiley. Unfortunately it was very well hidden within a bunch of young pine trees and shrub. Ground Zero was about 50 feet off so some serious looking around was necessary. Needless to say with a bunch of pine needles down the back of my shirt, which is why I usually wear a hat, I found it.

Since it was a fairly good sized geocache I placed one of my signature first aid kits within. I love the first aid kits because they are a buck a piece and very handy when needed.

I also was pleased to see a CITO 35MM container. These were popular a while back but have petered out as of late. The idea is you take the plastic bag inside the 35mm container. Fill it with trash on the way back to your car and then refill a new bag into the 35mm and place it in your next geocache. They worked great. Hope they catch back on.

Well it's time to hit the drive thru and back to work. A great bit of nice weather and geocaching hunting always makes me smile.

See you out on the trails,

HHH

Never Would Have Known...

As stated by so many geocachers in the past. I never would have known this place was here if it wasn't for geocaching.

I went out for a lunchtime geocache and had no clue this beautiful park was here. Complete with scenic waterfalls and historic information. I absolutely love finding geocaches in places of interest.

Lassiter Falls is a beautiful place for a geocache. Placed at the site of the old Lassiter Mill including a very well kept park and the amazingly peaceful sounds of the falls themselves. This is a picnickers paradise.

The geocache itself was a quick find and fun to do thou with some hindsight I really wish I brought my lunch with me so I could have spent more time here.

Once again another lunch time geocache I am very glad I found. I will be going back to Lassiter Falls in the future just to sit back an soak in the scenic views it gives.

See you out on the trails...

When Muggles Are Not Muggles - My Geocaching Lunch Time Adventure

If you have geocached for any amount of time you run across this scenario.

Don't find too many doggies in a tree.

You park your car and get everything ready for a hopefully fun geocache find. After checking your GPS you are informed that ground zero for the geocache is 125 feet in THAT direction. No problem until you notice that the nearby sound of a lawn mower is actually a muggle cutting the grass in the same area as the geocache hide. Well shucks, now what? This was my choice for my lunchtime geocache and I wouldn't have time to go looking for another find so I decided to and scope out the situation.

Springtime Geocaching

Luckily for me there were some benches nearby and I went with the "enjoying the spring time sunshine - sitting on the park benches" ploy.  It worked like a charm and I could easily see the geocache almost at arms reach from my spot.  Then I glanced at the person cutting the grass and grinning ear to ear. "That's my geocache", she mouthed out over the sound of the mower. Which then ended up being a wonderful 10 minute conversation.  "Keeddiiee" who owned the geocache has been a geocacher since 2009 and owned the property at ground zero. It is always nice when you meet up with the cache owners. Needless to say I then moved quickly to get the log signed and found some travelers to move on.

Took the race car travel bug en route to Chicago.

The red race car had a red tag attached that read "Take me to Chicago!". I thought this was a very cool way of placing a one sentence goal that anyone can see and not have to look at the TB webpage.
I will be dropping this one off by the RDU airport travel bug hotel.

So there you go. When are muggles not muggles? When they are geocaching cache owners.  Them's the best kind when snooping around ground zero.

-HHH

Geocaching Adventures: 150 Civil War Geotrail - North Carolina

Had the opportunity on Friday to go out with wife Amy and look for some of the geocaches available for the North Carolina 150 Civil War Geotrail.  I have to admit that it is truly an amazing collection of historic sites.

Now when I say geotrail this is not like the usual stereotypical geotrails. These are not geocaches placed every 600ft with one right after the next. No, these geocaches are spread out all over the state of North Carolina. Which are broken up into five regions and all designed to show you key points of history you may never have known existed.

When attempting the 150 Civil War Geotrail do not think you are going to be able two blow through this in a day or weekend. This is going to take some time to complete.

Here is where you can get some vital information for accomplishing this amazing historical adventure. If you are brand new to geocaching you will need to create a geocaching account. You can go here to do that -[ REGISTER ]-  or www.geocaching.com.

To get you started with the 150 Civil War Geotrail you may begin here:

Facebook Page:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/NC-Civil-War-150-Geotrail/716201498407252?ref=stream

Here is some key information hot links if you would like to give this a go. The first thing you are going to need is the printable passport. -[ LINK ]- This is extremely important for each geocache contains a code word you will need to fill in your passport as you find each geocache.

You will also need a geocaching bookmark of all the available geotrail geocaches as well. Thank you to DukeRoom -[ LINK ]-

There you have it. Your historical geocaching adventure awaits. Have fun and don't forget to look up the rewards you may achieve if you complete the geotrail. Details on the Facebook Page.

Lunchtime Geocaching in Ivy

Love them lunchtime geocaches. First attempt on a different geocache was a DNF. Found this one relatively easy, now on to the drive thru.

Lunch Time Geocaching in a Holler

Having some fun lunch time geocaching adventures. Whilst going down steep holler hills and almost falling down into a stream another 20 foot drop from that.

Thank goodness for small trees, just saying. Beautiful area. Now time to get back to work.
