On Our Way Home

Debaere and I are on our way home from GeoWoodstock 11. Attempting to find a geocache in each of the next four states.

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Oh yes we did

Well that was absolutely interesting to do. Met up with some geocachers enjoying the sunshine. Took some interesting photographs. And met the geocache owner in his full glory on the way out. Definitely one of the more unique geocaching experiences that I've had in quite a while.

GeoWoodstock XI: Meeting Up With The Podcacher Gang - Sonny, Sandy and Sean

(LtoR - HHH, Sandy, Sonny, Debaere

Had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with Sonny and Sandy ( plus Sean) from the Podcacher Podcast today whilest attending the GeoWoodstock XI Mega Event. Not only did take a long awaited item off my bucket list, both Debaere and myself was able to share some of their time time during the afternoon.

We started out early in the morning just as GeoWoodstock XI when I noticed that the Podcacher gang were only a couple of booths down from Debaere and myself with our GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast booth. There was very little time for chit chat even though I had been waiting for years to finally meet Sonny and Sandy but the show mush go on and they had to scoot to the main stage area to put on a Q&A show. Then some weirdness happened. Dave and I also went down to the main stage area and found out with S&S that they did not have a microphone set up. In fact there was no PA system at all. YIKES! The compromise was a megaphone that they would have to speak loudly into with the hopes that their voices would carry. Not Good. That and the fact that the crowd did not fully know that their show was about to start. That's when yours truly stepped in and I did some crowd awareness HeadHardHat style. Next thing you know in a couple of minutes the stage area had a nice crowd and Sonny and Sandy were able to go on with their show.

After that we passed hither and yon during the day and mentioning that we needed to each do an interview with the other and that we were looking forward to it. Then 2pm came around and it was Debaere and myself's turn to take the stage. The show went well and we did some audience participation talking about different memorable aspects of geocaching. Debaere was a real champ with it being his first time up on stage like that. I was my usual Headhardhat self.

After our show had finished we all went back to work via our booths until later in the afternoon. Then both Sonny and Sandy came over to our booth and we had a really genuine nice time doing interviews with each other. You will have to take a listen on our shows to really get in the fun but we all had a great time doing them.

Then it was on to the final presentations for the day and it was time to say our good-byes. Again there are people in the media that are genuinely fun to be around and Sonny and Sandy are awesome examples of this. It takes a lot of work to promote one's show and still have time to meet up and converse with fellow podcasters. Sonny and Sandy all day were nothing but fun, professional and a pleasure to be around. I want to thank S,S and S for sharing our GeoWoodstock XI experience. It is not something I will quickly forget.

GeoWoodstock XI Preregistration

Here at the GeoWoodstock 11 pre-registration. There are lots of people here. The event goes on till 8 p.m. tonight and you have lots of opportunities to purchase different geocache swag including all your own geocoins, tags and different items. It is really a lot of fun meeting everybody.

It Be Hot Down Here in Florida

I'll tell you what I am going to be very glad when the temps drop down a little bit here in Florida. It's currently about 95 and about the same in humidity. Stopped off at a fast food restaurant and bumped into a couple of geocschers from Louisiana who also are heading for GeoWoodstock 11. Tonight is the preregistration event. Should be a relaxing fun.

First Geocaches in Georgia and Florida

Found my first geocaches in Georgia and now Florida with Dave. On to GeoWoodstock 11.

Another South Carolina Geocache

Almost to Georgia so Debaere and I stretched our legs by getting another geocache.

First Geocache Heading To Geowoodstock XI

First geocache found South Carolina just south of the border more to come.

Debaere and Headhardhat Going To Geowoodstock XI

GEOWOODSTOCK  XI or BUST: The GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast is on the road!

Yes, co-host Dave Debaere and myself (Headhardhat) will be some very busy geocachers over this Memorial Day weekend. For starters Dave is traveling from the west side of North Carolina and meeting up with me in Raleigh. We will finish packing my cache mobile and do our normal Thursday night live broadcast of the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast at 8:30pm ET. You can watch it live via our LIVE YouTube Stream at www.geosnippits.com. Join the Chatroom to converse with the show and geocachers around the world.  Anywho, once the broadcast is done we hit the sack - Dave gets a mattress in the Geosnippits studio, then it is time to get up at 4:30am and hitting the road.

Lakeland, Florida is about 10 hours drive so you know it will be more than that. We have a Pre-registration event sometime after 5 o'clock and so we will get to meet up with geocachers and get a feel for the place. On Saturday we have to be on the grounds around 8am and will be getting our booth setup. GeoWoodstock opens at 9am. There will be so much to do and you are more than welcome to stop by and say hi. Then at 2pm both Dave and I take the big stage and will be doing a question and answer session with everyone. Please come on by and enjoy the show. Bring those Geocaching questions you want to know.  This is going to be such a blast!

Then there will be all the events Dave has booked us to on Saturday and Sunday - holy cow we are going to be busy but it is not often we get to talk with so many fellow geocachers.

Monday we hit as many Geocaches as possible on the trip home. I am excited because I currently do not have any Geocaches in Georgia and Florida so I will be loving this.

If you have any suggestions for Dave and I for the stage show or while we are there please let us know.

See you at Geowoodstock XI
Headhardhat

Geocache First To Find

Wow my first FTF in quite a while. I was actually getting ready for going to Woodstock 11 and just happened to look at some geocaches that were near my house and decided to go and get this one. Even though this was not my favorite geocache container the pure tonnage of wild honeysuckle in the area was so amazingly cool to smell.

Even though I'm dodging afternoon showers, I just have the geocache bug and need to go get some more. If I find any that's interesting I'll put it up on my blog. Have a great day geocaching.

It is done, they are hidden.

Well it is done. I have finally placed all five of my geocaching series There Be Dragons Here into the wild.  The weather was gorgeous but a bit on the warm side with the temps near 90. It was well worth it though and I am now very relieved they are placed. So now all I have to do is wait for two of the geocaches to be reviewed and the series will be opened for geocachers to find.

These Dragons Mean Geocaching Business - Grrrr

I have been working so long on these guys I'm almost hesitant to put them out into the wild.

Yep they are stock full of swag have first to find Prizes and a really cool notebook, here we go.

My first multi listing geocaching series - There Be Dragons Here. Should be live by the weekend.

COORDS Are Final For My There Be Dragons Here Multi Listing Series - W00t!

Yes I am one happy geocaching hider. After all the work and investigation along a nearby greenway I finally have all of the coordinates in place for my geocaching series There Be Dragons Here.  So all of the ammo boxes are ready, filled with swag, FTF prizes, notebook and proper signage. The coordinates have been registered in the four listing services and just waiting final approval from two of the sites. The geocaches get hidden tomorrow and once all are approved I will officially publish them to be found. I am very excited and also interested if geocachers will just go for the ones on their listing site and ignore the rest or go for the whole series. I now have officially placed a hide on all the main services.

Will let you know when it is ready and the GC number for the first of the series. Good luck everyone and I hope you enjoy the quest.

It's The Munzees, Sorta

Actually the Smiths,  sorta. Just introduced fiance Amy to Munzees. We had some time to kill this evening and a bunch were nearby.  Picked up 12 of them so that puts Amy to level 3.

Had fun when getting dirty doing a geocache wouldn't do. Besides Amy was in high heels ;)

Munzees I Place 19 Months Ago Still Looking Good

I placed this particular Munzee on a nearby greenway about 19 months ago and after all this time the plastic strap holding it looks a bit sun worn but the Munzee itself is in great shape. I used a standard printer and business card lamination to create this series. The secret was making the Munzee small enough to fit and have enough room for a punch hole that would keep it's seal and not be anywhere near the actual paper of the Munzee.

I will most likely be putting more out in the not too distant future.

An Afternoon Geocaching With Amy

Bison tube hanging from fishing string in storage drain.

On Saturday I was able to go out for the afternoon with my fiance Amy and do some geocaching in the Clayton, NC area. This was a real treat for me and also a good way to introduce geocaching to Amy. I really wanted to see if she was going to be interested in this same game, sport and obsession as I was.

For that very reason we did not go out for the numbers, I wanted the geocaching experience to be a pleasant one for Amy. So I particularly looked for geocaches that were larger and easier in difficulty. I also added in geocaches with favorite points as well.

Amy signing a log from a pill bottle geocache.
We started out with some easy park and grabs to warm up which went really well. Amy "discovered" my automobile travel bug so that was a first for her that day as well. Then we hit something unexpected. A geocache that was labeled with a terrain as 1.5 and it turned out being much more like a 3.  We pulled up to an area that was under development and looks like it stopped for quite a while. As we walked to the edge of  the nearby holler I thought to myself that she was not going to want to do this. Much to my delight she wanted to give it a try. So hand in hand we followed what only could be described as a deer trail that wound down the steep and highly overgrown grassy side. That was part one.  Part two was more of a challenge which took a very steep 50 foot drop deeper into the expanse. It was at this time I suggested I go down and if I find it I will show it to her. She happily agreed to this.

To be honest I had wished I brought some rope for this one because most of this downhill climb I did sliding on my butt. As I was heading down the thought of getting back up the muddy slope was going to be a challenge for me but on to the geocache.

Beautiful stream setting at the base of the holler
The find for the geocache once I got down there was actually very easy. It was hidden under a root structure and plainly visible when you looked in that direction. So that was easy. I took a bunch of pictures while down in the holler and to be frank it was a very scenic spot and down right tranquil. Just wish I knew what I was getting into before going in. Happily the climb back was not as bad as I had thought. I slipped in the muddy sections but was lucky enough to have my hiking pole and some well placed smaller trees to help pull myself back up. Only took a few minutes and I was back with my fiance. She was all smiles and apparently found great humor watching me tackle this obstacle. Good to know she would have shot it all on video if it was deemed worthy.
That's Amy via the dark spot in upper left corner.
We moved on in our afternoon adventure and found a few more geocaches before taking on a greenway. It was really nice and the couple of mile walk was scenic and well worth the time together. We ended up finding four other geocaches and one DNF. I showed her how two other people also did not find that particular one and how to review such things on her phone app.

One small section of the greenway. Plenty of room for more geocaches.

It turned out to be a perfect geocaching adventure and it is my hope to be the first of many to come with Amy. She had a great time and is getting a kick out of how much fun geocaching can be. I can tell she is just itching to get the bragging rights of finding the next geocache before I do. Once that happens - look out HHH.

Met HillbillyHermione Looking For A 22 Favorite Point Geocache

Geocache Owner HillbillyHermione and HeadHardHat
On Saturday, Amy and I went for a geocache known as Hotel Illness which has 22 favorite points and now i know why.

After arrivimg near ground zero we scoured the area for about half an hour with no apparent spot around big enough to hide a large lock n lock box. We needed a little help on this one. Fortunately cache owner HillbillyHermione happened to be nearby and was very gracious to point us in the right direction. After making the find we got to spend a few minutes to talk and it was very cool to meet her and see this excellent geocache. Its GC36NA5 if interested in learning more.
