Out For A Stroll In The Woods, Lake, Swamp and Greenway

Was out enjoying a nice day with my girlfriend Amy and walking around Lake Benson Park. It was a very nice change of sunshine and 60 degree days after a couple of weeks of snow, ice, rain and blech. The sun was out and only a slight breeze the closer to the lake the path took us. There were a couple of new geocaches that I had not picked up before so it was an opportune time to do some filming. One of the cool things about Lake Benson Park are all the different terrains packed in this great place. You have a wide field of cut grass, woods, swamp and beach - awesome.

The concept that both Debaere and I have been working on is essentially creating a 2-3 minute geocaching commercial that we will feature on the show and YouTube. It will be a fast paced overview of our game sport and obsession with the premise of "Geocaching is...". There the viewer will be enticed with a pluthera of factual and comical bits of information about geocaching.

Because I was taking Amy out for a walk in the woods with me and also have her run the Kodak Sport video camera for me. I tried to get things in one take and not have her have to bushwack through too many briars. She was a real trooper though she did make it clear she was not going to be doing camera work all the time on our hikes. Well noted.

One of our finds in the park was a nano. A fairly fast find but as usual it takes longer getting the log book back into a nano than it does to find it sometimes.

It took me a few minutes longer than I wanted but eventually I got the log into the cap as it should be.

After several miles of walking in multiple terrains we were able to get the footage that I wanted and were able to head home. I had a great time out today and can't wait until spring gets here in full bloom. Oh and I hope to have our first GeoSnippits Reboot Video out in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

I've Fallen And Got Back Up... This Time.

One of the reasons that I love going out Geocaching is because it instantly gives me valued insights that I can then pass on to my viewers. This last weekend was no exception, the situation I am about to discuss could have been terrible but by the grace of the Big Guy Upstairs I was not seriously injured. Thank you God.

So there I was all Geocaching and stuff on my birthday. It was exceptionally cold and windy for North Carolina this time of year but I was not going to hear it from GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast host Debaere that the weather got me from Geocaching again. It's not fair really, granted I am from Michigan but he's from Canada where the only thing they play with is polar bears and igloos. I over exaggerate, though it gets mighty cold up there and he is much more aggressive when it comes to winter caching than I, but I digress.

So there I was Geocaching on my birthday and picking up some quick park and grabs. The sun was warmer though the wind chilled air kept any recent snow/ice in that partially melted and partially ice state. I was going for a Geocache that literally had three levels of possibility of which the Geocache could be hid. Ground level I scoured pretty well with the mid level another ten feet above and the top layer another ten feet above that. I was not going to attempt the middle level because the was no rail to speak of and the ground was ice covered. A serious fall possibility and I was caching by myself. So up to the top level I went. It was a parking lot with a rail so I did not have any real fear of falling from there. The ice on the asphalt was slick but I kept my eye on where I was walking and even though I could not find the geocache in the howling wind I noticed a way of maybe checking some of the mid section. It looked safe. On the far side of the area was a steep sloping sidewalk that led to the middle section which was in the shade but seemed like a safe walk. I literally remember looking down at the wet patch and thought, "That is most likely very icy and I should walk around that area".  Then I promptly was distracted by my phone and stepped on the slick ice patch anyways...

What followed next was a bit of a blue. I remember falling backwards and landing flat on my back. No real pain but was curious that I felt my right foot underneath me just about where my right shoulder blade was. My initiall thought was, "that really shouldn't be there and why is this not hurting more"? My head started to clear a bit and I rolled on my side while moving my leg down to where it was supposed to be. I didn't hit my head and started looking around. No one was around to see this because it was on the far side of the building, my phone was about 15 feet down the sidewalk and keys about eight feet behind me. Both flew out of my pocket when I hit the concrete. That was when I had the realization of how alone I was in this particular situation. Fortunately when I attempted to get up my leg was uninjured. Don't ask me how because I was sure in the position I was in that something was out of place or worse. Long story short I got up,dusted myself off, picked up my phone and keys and then went to find a few more Geocaches.

The point to this tale? When we go Geocaching it is so very important that we tell someone where we intend to go Geocaching. In my particular situation I was on the far side of a popular shopping mall but no one would have see me if I was injured. My phone and keys went flying even though I thought they were snug in my pockets. If I had been injured with a broken leg I may not have received help any time soon and the cold weather conditions would have complicated things even more. So I guess what I am trying to say is be careful out there when Geocaching. Even in areas you are less likely to get hurt doesn't mean you can't get hurt. Be extra safe, let people know where you are at and give times for them to be concerned if you don't show back up. How many times are we just out of view from the public and unknowingly just out of view from help as well?

Food for thought by example from your friendly, neighborhood, geocaching Headhardhat.

Geocachers: You Need To Check Out CacheFace

I was listening to Collin French from the UK Geocaching Podcast and in their February episode not only do they do a mention about yours truly but they also talk about a very cool new website called CacheFace.

Think of CacheFace as a facebook for geocaching website. Except without all the kitt ' ehs. I really hope you give it a try. It has a whole lot in functionality without having to be offered play some gambling game. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Oh and it is free.

A Geocoin Birthday Gift

An engrave-able geocoin from CoinsAndPins.com
I really was not expecting anything quite so cool as the geocaching based gift I received from my girlfriend Amy and my daughter Amanda. Not to say they don't give very cool gifts but when it is something completely unexpected it is even more, well, cool.

Thus the geocoin I received for my birthday. What surprised me is that I did not know that CoinsAndPins.com did engraving. It's right there on their website but I never guess that I put the two toghether and now that I know how many cool geocaching things you can do with engraving. For now I will leave my creative thinking in check and show you the coin.

Note - Black line is where trackable code is.
Now in this example the coin has a great feel and look to it. It's a 2" x 2" bronze square with plenty of detail and color. The front has raised etching which gives this geocoin it's umph in my opinion though the back has all the personalization of which my girlfriend and daughter exclaims. It's to me a collector's item that will not be going out into the wild but rather cherished in my personal collection.

If you are interested in seeing all the available engrave-able geocoins that CoinsAndPins.com has to offer, simply go here --> http://www.coinsandpins.com/custom-engraving

Thanks again to Amy and Amanda for such a wonderful birthday gift!

GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast - Episode 005: Create Your Own Emergency Geocache Repair Kit

Well I must say things are coming around very well for the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast. Co-Host Dave Debaere and I now have five episodes under our belt now and even though I have been known to slip up every once and a while during the show it really is finding it's own way. Our world wide audience is increasing with each new episode and we are getting some really great feed-back from our viewers. The more the merrier I say.

Tonight's show has been the best from a production standpoint. We had a fantastic show overall when we recorded it and all the behind the scenes things went extremely smooth. Things like the YouTube videocast was out sooner rather than later. My editing of the audio podcast only took an hour instead of much more like earlier episodes. Then getting the latest post to our Word Press blog and out into the RSS stream went smooth as silk. I think I am starting to understand how things are supposed to go and not beating on things until three in the morning. So much better.

So here is last night's RAW and uncut recording of episode 005. Enjoy!

By the way you can hear the audio podcast at www.geosnippitsreboot.com as well.

Insuring Geocacher Smartphones?!?

In the geocaching world it seems that there are a whole lot more geocachers using smartphones these days than standard GPSr handheld units. This is amazing to me for several reasons. One, the shear popularity of GPS capable phones now being used by the general public. It really wasn't all that long ago that the only people who had a smartphone was a company given one. Two, the total amount of location based applications that are available at almost zero cost to the consumer. For the longest while it seemed that Geocaching apps were the only ones that were around except for a map app. The final reason blows my mind more than everything. Many of these smartphones being used with Geocaching would cost the consumer hundreds of dollars to replace if broken and geocachers do not seem to bat an eye. Are we all just praying to the cell phone gods and hoping the inevitable just won't happen?  Really? How many rivers and streams do we cross, rocky terrains do we hike or concrete walkways do we travel? These amazing tools are handy but expensive. Yet most people not only do not take safeguards to replace a device with minimal cost but even play the game of chance like it couldn't happen to them.

That is a very risky gamble in my book.

When asked not too long ago on my Google+ stomping grounds I was literally floored by the variety and intensity of the responses to the question of "Do you have insurance for your smartphone?". All the responses were from geocachers and most used their smartphone as much or more than their handheld GPSr unit.

Here is what I realized.

Some people do indeed have insurance on their phone but verbally only a couple actually admitted it and had incidences where a replacement was needed.

Most do not have insurance for their smartphones. In fact, most would refuse to pay the standard monthly amount asked for insurance. A consensus thinks the price is too high to start with and that it is a sham and one ends up paying more than necessary to replace the phone overall anyways.

Strikingly many geocachers are playing the game of chance stating that they are very careful with their smartphones and have never had an incident. Therefore it is not needed... Interesting.

The level headed geocachers are out there and they utilize their hand held GPSr for the times that their smartphone may be in too much possible peril. To me that makes the most sense but this apparently is not widely the case and even less put into practice. Maybe I should put stock in the cell phone company stock after all.

What do you think?
