Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv): Smorgasbord of Topics #905Meet & Greet

It is official, we love doing Meet and Greet style formats for Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) shows. They are so much fun and has a completely relaxed atmosphere to it. We get to goof around a bunch more like tonight when Creative Director, Dave Dufour was all dressed up in a tie, I punked him by also wearing a tie over my tie-dye tshirt.  We also have a more direct communication with the viewers in the the chat-room.

Tonight's episode was kind of a Smorgasbord of Topics which happens when we have a bunch of different subjects to talk about but none of them by themselves would fill a whole section or show. We talked about interesting geocaching goodness like using Triangulation to find a geocache, showed a website that makes converting map coordinates easy and showed off a Decoder Geocoin. There is a whole bunch more but you really should see the show to appreciate all of it.

For the Geocaching World Cache Stash Sponsorship we introduced CoinsAndPins.com who has donated all kinds of great prizes for the show. We gave away a trackable tag and a really cool geocoin. Thanks so much to CoinsAndPins.com for being a part of the Cache Stash!

We also announced the next big Give-A-Way Contest. The fine folks at Brazos Walking Sticks has donate a hand made trackable walking stick. We will be doing a complete review on the prize which will be shown in my  blog and all the details for the contest will be reveled in next weeks show.

Phew, so much stuff and we only touched the surface. Again watch the whole show when it comes out on iTunes, The TechPodcast Network, Blubrry, Roku and a host of other distributors.  Thanks for the folks who did join us in the chat-room and on the TechPodcast Network for watching. You really do make the show more fun to do!

You can join us each and every week as we record Geocaching World on Thursdays at 6:30pm EST. We meet up in the chat room here: www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live

If you are a company who would like to participate with our Geocaching World Cache Stash Sponsorship Program and donate prizes for our show please email geocache@rvnn.tv for more details.

See you next week.

Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Meet and Greet Episodes Rock!

Over the past month or so we have had a slightly different format to our Geocaching World show. Normally we offer a 30 minute show which is broken up with three, eight minute, segments and the rest is filled with commercials, show bumpers and other necessary stuff. It is really a lot of fun to do but one of the things we noticed was how Creative Director Dave Dufour, Producer Courtney Wallin and myself Andy "HeadHardHat" Smith kept discussing a ton of Geocaching stuff in-between segments. Many times we answered questions from the chat room which is full every time we record the show and none of this was recorded. A terrible waste of content in my opinion. We needed a way of getting almost all of our discussions recorded and so the Geocaching World "Meet and Greet" was tried.

If you go to iTunes you will see the Meet and Greet style shows are a bit longer. Usually running a good 45 minutes in length or more. We do commercials but they are done live right as we record the show. As an added bonus a lot more of the adhoc discussions are kept within the show as well. This gives Geocaching World a much more relaxed "let's hang out and talk Geocaching" kind of feel to it.

Now we get a lot more interaction with the chat room, more photos from geocachers and LOTS more chances for people to win cool prizes from our Cache Stash. The Geocaching World Cache Stash is a sponsorship program where Geocaching based companies can donate prizes that are given away during the show in exchange for a mention of the company and their product. It is becoming very popular with more participants getting into the program every month. A nice win-win in all of our books.

So if you are interested in Geocaching and want to learn more, want to get in on the fun of hanging out with a whole bunch of very interactive and helpful geocachers in the chat room or just want to participate in the making of a live TV show. Geocaching World is the place to be.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

- HeadHardHat

Geocaching World is recorded each Thursday at 6:30pm EST and you can come to our LIVE Chatroom and participate in the show by going here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live

If you are interested in participating with our Geocaching World Cache Stash you can contact us by emailing  Geocache@RVNN.tv for more details.

If you have any comments, questions or photos you would like to share with us, please email us at geocache@RVNN.tv

Figuring out how to buy the right GPSr for you.

My Old Reliable, No longer in production but the Garmin 60CSx is
a fine GPSr.
Either through my shows, blog or in general, one of the most frequently asked questions I get asked is,

"I want to buy a GPSr, which is the best?".

For starters that is the wrong question. You should not be asking yourself which GPSr is the best... Instead you should be asking yourself, "Which GPSr is the best for me?". There are several things in play here. You have to be clear. Are you just seeing which GPSr has the biggest "WOW" factor and with the most bells and whistles or are you going for the unit that you want to use as you go out geocaching, hiking and travelling about? Important distinctions.

If you honestly want to purchase a GPSr for your own personal use there are some factors you must take under consideration. I narrowed them down to a few which cover all you will need to make a good solid decision. Here goes.

SHOULD I GET A GPSr AT ALL? The Value of Use:

Without having to go through all the hub bub, lets get right down to it. What are you going to use your GPSr for? Is it for geocaching, outdoor activities like hiking, travel from place to place?  If you are brand new to geocaching I would suggest that you hold off on the purchase of your GPSr for a month or so. WHAT?  Why would I say that? Because for some, geocaching sounds like a really great hobby to get into and it is. Yet some find out that it may not be what they thought it was and before you invest a chunk of pocket change into a new GPSr that you will only be using for a few weeks. You might want to borrow one from a friend or another geocacher if you can. If you then find out that you want to proceed, read on.

TIME TO DO SOME RESEARCH

Oh quit cringing, we are just getting started. Here is the question I want you to ask yourself. Do you really need all the fancy functionality? For many including myself we want all the bells and whistles we can get. The newer GPSr units can include built in cameras, voice recorders, messaging systems and much more. There is nothing wrong with looking to see what is out on the current market. Yet also realize that there is a cost for all those cool features and that directly influences how much less your wallet is going to weight. Just saying.

So let's try this on the other end. The minimum you need to go Geocaching with a GPSr. A GPSr by nature is a rugged, waterproof gizmo made for being outdoors. This is not the same description I would state in regards to smartphones. Which are not made for being outside at length including being dropped on the ground or into any kind of moisture. A standard GPS will come with some basics like a map and the ability to place coordinates in which you will see where you are presently and where you need to go. There is usually the ability to mark where you started and the path you have travelled. Always great for getting back to your car. When it comes to Geocaching. That is pretty much all you need. Beyond that falls under the bells and whistles category.  Saying this strictly for perspective. What you actually want is totally up to you.

Start looking at the major players when it comes to GPSr units. The things you want to keep in mind is Accuracy, Memory Storage and Battery Life. Almost as important would be Screen Display, Overall Usability and Functionality. Now you can add your bells and whistles. It is always good to read reviews about the product because that usually will tell you it's strengths and weaknesses. ALL GPSr units have combinations of likes and dislikes. You need to decide what you must have and what you can live with or without.

WILLING TO SPEND

It does not matter how great a particular GPSr may be if you don't have the budget to purchase the item. So it's time to cut to the chase. I really wanted to put this as the first item in this article but felt it was just as important for you to understand what you are dealing with before putting on the breaks in your decision making. So now let's get realistic. If you cringe at the thought of spending  over $150.00 I am going to save you some trouble and tell you to invest in a low end Magellan Explorist and call it a day. It is a fine starter GPSr made for Geocaching and will serve you well. I would also suggest looking for GPSr units on EBay there are some good deals there as well.

With that out of the way I am now referring to the middle ground price range which averages between $200.00USD to $400.00USD. Here is where I feel the majority of the target geocachers shoot for. In this price range you are talking a GPSr that has a really good user interface and better than average accuracy. Things like heavy tree coverage, hills and valleys won't slow the unit down all that much. You most likely won't see many of the high end bells and whistles but you should be able to do a lot of paperless Geocaching with it. Again your budget dictates everything. Purchase wisely.

FINAL DECISION

So there you go. If you did your homework and used the information I provided to you above. You should be able to come up with a good price range and idea of
GPSr unit that you want. If you notice I did not specify brands. You will find relatively quickly which brands rise to the top of the list and why. That is why it is so important for you to know how much you can spend. What features you want with your GPSr and which fit your needs and budget. I hope this helps you find what is best for you.

Munzee Is Having You Dig For Gold

I really think the folks at Munzee are getting the right idea for making their game continuously more interesting and fun to play. This just came from their newsletter about the new Gold Rush feature:

Munzee GOLD RUSH

This weekend (9/17/11) we will be launching a brand new gameplay element called Munzee Gold Rush. This is our version of rewarding a player for "First to Capture". We are going to be randomly converting existing deployed munzees to a piece of gold and the first person to capture these munzees will be rewarded 50 points. Once they are captured they will then return to their normal munzee state.

While in Gold status, players who have captured the munzee before will be able to capture it again as long as you aren't the creator of the munzee. Munzee Gold will be visible on the maps in the apps (iPhone and Android), the "Hunt" list view on the apps and on the map featured on the website.

Will you be fast enough to capture some gold? For more details, visit our forum topic on Munzee Gold Rush.

Another cool incentive to give this QR Code based game a try.. FTF hounds unite. Thar's gold in them thar hills..

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Episode #32 - FAQ's

What a fun show tonight. This episode of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) was in that fun and easy style of a Meet and Greet. Here we get away with a lot more. We communicate with the chat room a whole lot more and they interact right back with us. This makes the show so much more entertaining because the chat room sort of directs how the show goes. Tonight we did an FAQ show, in other words, a geocaching Frequently Asked Question show. It doesn't matter how much a person does geocaching there are always questions about some subject or another. Tonight we pulled out of a hat a bunch of different questions and then discussed them. This further brought in other questions from the chat room and on we went.

The weekly show prizes were both donated by our friends at GxProxy.com. the first was some great Trail Tags. These are night type tacks that are directional. They literally can point in the next direction you want the finder to go. Our winner of this had to encode a message into Rot13 and that was - Dane Morgan.

The second question was what does the acronym TPTB mean? The winner was Louis Caplan who won some really nice GxProxy.com donated Waypoint Tags.

It was so relaxed tonight even Dave Dufour and I got to make fun of Producer Courtney Wallin in regards to the Michigan / Notre Dame game played earlier in the week. I was able to get my "Go Blue" digs in because they won said game and Courtney gave one of her best "The Look" expressions I have had in a while.

Questions tonight touched adopting a geocache, how reliable are smart phone GPS units, what is a stash note and do a lot of geocachers like geocaching alone. There were tons more but these are some of them.

We went through two different "Lets Go Geocaching" videos where we witnessed a bunch of different geocaching hides in areas around the country.

There was a whole lot more talked about as well but you really should see the show itself. It is well worth the watch.

Enjoy,

-HHH

Geocaching World is recorded each and every week LIVE on Thursday's at 6:30pm EST. You can go here to join the chat room and watch the show. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. 220 - Review of Bad-Elf GPSr

Tonight we had a full crew so Darrylw4, XpunkX and I were there for your geocaching pleasure. The show was very informative with XpunkX leading the way with his review of the Bad-Elf GPSr products. Basically it is a device that can attach to just about any iOS device giving it GPS capabilities.

The chat room was a bit on the quiet side tonight even though we had a full crowd in there. Rare but does happen. All the more to have talk next week.

Speaking of which, see you next week!

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST.

The recorded episode will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Is Geocaching Going Too Digital? Is There A Line?

Move Virtual Avatars Like
Travel Bugs
*Note -  The following is not a 'dig' about the products and applications mentioned below. It is in fact a realization on HHH's part and gave a good excuse to mention an observation. No applications were harmed in the making of this post.

We have seen a huge surge of geocaching-like apps and concepts that focus on digital devices. Games like Munzee where you use your smart phone and scan QR Codes to claim your points. Then there is Geocaching.com who just came out with their new "Challenges" where one takes a photograph (usually with a smart phone) at a specific location or doing a specific thing. Now there is a new twist that I thought interesting called Serentripiti. Here you make individual avatars that get picked up and dropped off based on location just like a travel bug and again all done with your smart phone.

So what is missing in this geocaching picture?  For the most part... The Geocaches.

One of the great things about geocaching to me is the ability to go out and geocache. As general as that sounds the idea of going out and finding physical treasures is what it is all about when it comes to "treasure hunting". Yet look what is happening. Once again we are going from a time where we finally are getting people out and into nature (yes urban caches I mean you too) and now we are finding all these concepts to make geocaching quick and easy and click & shoot and in most cases you practically don't have to get out of your car to do it. What's the fun in that?

Now what did just occur to me is that geocaching as a whole has a demographic with the older set. In fact I am right smack in the middle of the main age group (most put it at 45 - 55). That doesn't mean there aren't tons of other ages involved we know there are but the mean is about there. So my thought is this, are these newer, applications and concepts geared for age groups that are younger, say younger than 45? Is it more appealing to the hip and electronic era to not mess with all that dirt, sticks and animals out in nature, cuz who wants to get dirty? Better to keep things hoppin' and just do everything on our phones. Heck most are glued to our hands like a Borg appendage anyways...

So is there a danger to geocaching being overwritten with simplistic, non-adventurous, arm chair applications of the future? Geez I hope not. Lets face it, you can't get the feeling of a cool breeze coming off a lake in the middle of a forest by sniffing your on/off button.

What are your thoughts?

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) - #31 Geocoinfest US 2011 - Meet and Greet

Last night's show was just a powerhouse of great discussion, lively guests and a packed chat room that took a life of it's own. Amazing!

This episode of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) started off early. The chat room started filling up about 20 to 30 minutes before setup time. I always like that because it gives me more time to chat with our viewers. Our first of two guests on the show was our Vonage: Time To Call iPad 2 Giveaway winner: Giancarlo Herrera. Giancarlo is an amazing young man who not only loves to geocache but who also has his own geocaching based podcast called the GeoCraze Podcast. We congratulate him on winning such an amazing prize!

Our second guest is one of the organizers to this year's Geocoinfest US 2011 Mega Event. Scott Seegars described to us all the details that are going to be happening this October. I am really excited about Geocoinfest because I will actually be attending it and also am a guest speaker. There will be lots more details when I get back and we will be featuring them in one of the upcoming Geocaching World episodes.

Did I mention how packed the chat room was? One of the main concepts behind the new Meet and Greet style shows is ability to be more relaxed and literally chat with everyone. We had discussions, questions and remarks all night from the chat room and to me personally THAT really dictates our show. The more interaction we have with our viewers the more fun it is for everybody. So now would be the best time to say thanks for everyone who did attend and we look forward to seeing you back and encourage even more to stop by and share the wealth of geocaching knowledge.

There was so much information we had to go through we almost forgot to give away our weekly prize for the show. ALMOST that is. This weeks winner received a cool 8 1/2" wristband from GeoSurvivalGear.com. We will be getting that and some of the backlogged prizes out in the mail this weekend.

Well that's all for now. Oh, before I forget I also wanted to welcome all the new viewers from The TechPodcast Network in which we simulcast not only the entire Geocaching World feed but we usually have 30 minutes or so to just chew the fat some more about geocaching with the chat room after the show. Again welcome to the show!

Geocaching World is recorded LIVE each and every week on Thursday's at 6:30pm EST. You can be a part of the show by going in our video chat room here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live

If  you would like to be a guest on Geocaching World, participate in our Cache Stash Sponsorship program, have show suggestions, photos or ideas - boy that is a lot :)  Send it to geocache@rvnn.tv, again thanks!

See you next week!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. #219 - September Cacher Coffee

Had a really great show last night with the Geocaching Podcast, even though we were down a co-host. Darrylw4 was not up to snuff so it was left to XpunkX and myself to carry the proverbial torch with this month's Cacher Coffee.

Personally I think we had a great time and the Live chat-room was really a buzz with discussion.

Topics of choice included some of the good ole basics like proper geocaching basics, travelers and adopting a geocache. During XpunkX's and my commentary there were a lot of information coming from the chat room and over the phone. The time literally flew by and the next thing I knew we were wrapping up. Always happens when things click.

All I can say is you don't want to miss this episode of the Geocaching Podcast and it should be out and available in the next day or so.

Or you can hear it right now... This just in..

Paperless Geocaching

Andy HeadHardHat Smith host of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv)
Last night on Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) we discussed what once was a very hot subject within Geocaching but I am not sure if it is still the concern it once was.

Paperless Geocaching has been ingrained so much into the activity that it is more of a given than a conscious effort. It was not always so, in the beginning, like all of about four years ago, there was no paperless Geocaching per-say. Geocachers were forced to write or print out listings of Geocaches, descriptions of Geocaches, maps or the general area a geocacher wanted to search. This would result in reams of printed content that was usually discarded once the Geocaching run was completed. To add to that Geocaching finds were recorded by hand in paper log books before finally being typed into a listing service.

Fortunately the demand to save trees came to be and GPSr units started having the ability to store caches internally via .loc and .gpx files. Stored within these files included meta data that also gave some of the same information that was found on the geocache pages. Usually a connective cable was used between the GPSr and a computer for the file transfer itself. It was not a perfect solution but it did cut down some of the paper being used to describe a geocache find.

Now bring in the gadgets. As GPSr units slowly started to incorporate and display more and more meta data devices like PDA's (Handspring, Palm) were found to be able to run programs like Cachemate that could display almost all of the meta data found in the .gpx files. Even though the PDAs did not have GPS functionality they did allow the geocacher the ability to load, display and log thousands of Geocaches with very little effort. Data could be easily transferred between the PDA and the computer. WiFi was a plus with the use of PDAs.

By the time the PDAs were becoming obsolete GPSr units were focusing on much more paperless functionality. Net books and laptops were becoming much more instruments of the paperless Geocaching society. Computers would allow full electronic functionality via programs like GSAK to create routes and easier logging. You no longer needed to print out maps because it was right there on the computer. It also allowed realtime logging directly into a listing web site. The beginning aspects of tethering was being explored. This allowed phone connectivity with a computer anywhere there was phone service. This was a step up from just having WiFi.

Smart phones quickly have made their mark in the paperless Geocaching world. Having the ability of realtime Geocaching, built in GPS functionality and powerful applications. Smart phones have a favorable all in one quality that many geocachers like. This is in direct competition with GPSr units that are struggling to keep up with the same functionality. Currently the big draw for GPS units is their rugged outdoor stability in contrast to a smart phone that is not made for rough or wet terrain.

Now that net books are in the process of being phased out, tablets and there equally powerful apps can contain all the functionality of real-time paperless Geocaching. This is currently directly in competition with the Smart phone market. Tablets can have 3G or other direct wireless communications. Geocaching applications are just as powerful as computer based programs in a device that can fit in your hand. By this time very little to no actual physical paper is needed. All data and information is transferred and stored electronically.

Where do we go from here?

I can see GPSr units incorporating new and more specific functionalities. They are already starting to have features like cameras, voice recordings and basic SMS texting. Who knows what will be available in even the short term future but one thing is for sure. There will be a whole lot more trees growing because of it.

What are your thoughts?

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Episode #30 Paperless Geocaching Meet and Greet

Tonight's episode of Geocaching World was once again a Meet and Greet format which meant it is a whole lot less formal overall. Creative Director Dave Dufour and myself like doing the show this way. Mainly because we can interact directly with the folks in the chat room. This is great because we can start on a particular subject and the chat room can direct in a way how the show goes. It is a lot of fun.

Because this format is a lot less formal we can give away a lot more prizes which is always great with the chat room and our viewers. This week we gave a really nice cami bison tube from GxProxy.com which went to Pingvoyager who is a regular in the chat room. We also showed a bunch of photos that were sent in for the Vonage: Time To Call contest we have been running all week. It showed geocachers doing what they do best. The entries that were sent in goes into a drawing that one lucky winner will win a brand new iPad 2. The drawing is Saturday, September 3, 2011.

The meat of discussion with today's show dealt with Paperless Geocaching. We went over the general history of paperless geocaching and how it and GPSrs has developed over the years. We talked about everything from PDAs, Netbooks, Tablets, Smart Phones and other applications.

The second prize we gave out was really cool. For the Vonage contest there is a limit of one entry per person. The prize we did here was who ever sent in the correct answer from the chat room would win ten entries to possibly win the iPad2. Viewer AVToolman was the viewer with the correct answer.

There is a whole lot of great discussion and other valuable information in the show itself. Be sure to check it out when it becomes available in iTunes in the next day or so.

Enjoy.
