Geocaching Timeline Trends: Sizes of Geocaches Based By Date Placed

In a very interesting fact filled episode of the Geocaching Podcast: Episode 359 - Shrinking Geocaches. Hosts Andy HeadHardHat Smith, Darrylw4 and StevensAdInfinitum discussed some fascinating revelations with regards to the entire geocaching timeline and the trends of geocache size at placement. The data was collected from Project-GC.com for the countries of Australia, Canada, Germany, U.K., and the U.S. Note - Data is only available through June 2014.

Below are the graphs for each country. Special thanks to Darrylw4 for the data correlation and graph creation.

Do You Have A Compass In Your Geocaching Pack?

How prepared are you as a Geocacher when going out into the wild?

Last night Darrylw4, The Bad Cop and myself were having our usual good time discussing geocaching. Of course we were doing it while recording The Geocaching Podcast which means the only major difference is the conversation was saved for you fine people to listen to later. Anyways, one portion of the conversation dealt with doing things old school. You know geocaching the way it was back near the beginning. We had printed pieces of paper (if we were lucky) that contained the cache information and the coordinates to find it.
Our GPSr may or may not have much more than an arrow and distance to target. Our logs were usually notebooks hand written with a pen. How primitive that sounds now but it brings up a great point. If you went into a large park, woods or forest and something goes wrong with your GPSr or smartphone. Lets say a few miles into unfamiliar territory. Would you be able to find your way back? Oh sure our ego boasts a hearty "no problem" , but in those circumstances where you are in thick foliage and the sun is behind the clouds and that trail system you are relying on has more twists and turns than an roller coaster ride. You sure you could find your way out?

Hense my suggestion that every Geocache take a note from the Boy Scout Merit Badge requirements and have a good ole standard compass and map of the area if possible as standard issue in your geocaching pack. You may snicker now but a person can get turned around real easy when venturing out. I can remember a couple of times with a GPSr and marking my car but not turning on the tracking function and then wandering off for a mile or so into a thick woods and having a heck of a time trying to refind my original path. All it takes is swamps, hollers and other obsticals to make you zig instead of zag and throw you off course.

Having a compass in your pack will help you find your way back quicker. Especially when your environment turns against you. Storms, nightfall and just being disoriented can get you into a bind really quick. Having the reassurance of a standard compass can give you a great boost right when you need it. We rely on our electronics to get us through which is fine until they fail. Be like the Boy Scouts and for your own sake - Be Prepared!

See you out on the trail!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - 2012 Holiday Gift List

Well last night's recording of the Geocaching Podcast was jam packed with holiday gift ideas AND was the switch over and away from Talkshoe. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this decision from podcast originators XpunkX and Darrylw4.  Talkshoe for me personally and to many others was a complete and utter pain in the arse. Constant changes to the software, VOIP conflicts and consistent unreliability made Talkshoe a pain to work with.  Now I will give it this, that the Chatroom was very nice to use with our listeners. The pro version was even nicer so finding a close alternative may be a bit of a challenge for Producer XpunkX. I have faith though that a good solution is not far down the road.

HHH, Darrylw4 and XpunkX shown here doing the Geocaching Podcast - LIVE!

What are we using now? Well, instead of just listening to us talk during the podcast recordings and type chatting in the Chatroom. We are now using Google+ On Air and the Geocaching Podcast Live website.  So now all you have to do to watch us record live is go to www.geocachingpodcast.com/live and you are done. There is an embedded video right there that let's you watch the three of us as we record and then just below is the Chatroom. We still have to work a couple of kinks before it is complete but all in all I think you are going to have an even better and more enjoyable experience with our show.

Speaking of which, last nights show was absolutely jammed packed with Holiday Gift List information for the geocacher in your life.  We started out at gifts under $10 and worked our way up. Each of us gave enough of a variety to give most everybody some great gift ideas. Be sure to check it out when the podcast goes live in the next day or so and there should be a YouTube version available as well. Enjoy.

The Geocaching Podcast is recorded live each and every Wednesday nights at 9:30pm ET. Be sure to see us as we record live by visiting us at www.geocachingpodcast.com/live.

See you next week,

Andy HeadHardHat Smith

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - October Cacher Coffee

XpunkX, Darrylw4 and HeadHardHat recording the Geocaching Podcast

The Geocaching Podcast is such a fun show to do. Not only do I get the opportunity to talk about all the fun and exciting aspects of geocaching but I get to do it with such talented personalities like XpunkX and Darrylw4. Now take that and put it into an open discussion forum like our monthly Cacher Coffee and we can go on for hours if we wanted. Last night's show was no exception.

Matter of fact we were in such a talkative mood we almost did the entire show just on our initial show banter alone. Now what makes our Cacher Coffee episodes so much fun is that it is like I mentioned earlier an open format. We decide prior to the show what bullet points we want to discus and then discuss them. Normally in a show we have sometimes dozens of key points to talk about in a rather structured format but on Cacher Coffee nights we have about three broad points and we just go at it. The other nice thing is that during these episodes we open up the chat room and hang outs for our listeners to get their .02cents in as well. Sometimes we get a bunch of people who chime in, sometimes not. Either way we go through a lot of content. The hard part overall is getting us to shut up. Happened last night, we start the show. We get talking about what happened during the past week and we get over half way through the show and we aren't out of the banter stage yet. Way too much fun.

Believe it or not we did actually have some things to talk about and we discussed at great length subjects like
The lastest version of GSAK and the cool macro additions you can now add to your geocaching prowess, Cachesense has a really sweet update for Android and what is going on with the Geosphere / iOS6 bugs that are about to be fixed. It was a really enjoyable show to do and we hope you enjoy listening to it as we do making it for you. Be sure to check it out in the next day or so when it gets released to all the available podcaching sources. You can get all of the Geocaching Podcast episodes also right from our website at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com.

The Geocaching Podcast is recorded LIVE each and every Wednesday at 9:30pm ET. Be sure to come hear us and participate in our chat-room.

See you next week!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. 270 - Buying Your New GPSr

HHH is co-host of The Geocaching Podcast
Last night XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself (Headhardhat) recorded episode #270 of the Geocaching Podcast.

It was good to be back in the saddle again after taking the past few weeks off for a family related hiatus. Even though XpunkX was still sick with a flu bug, Darrylw4 and myself were both pretty much whipped by show time but that is how it goes sometimes. The point is we are back and I personally am getting my sorry excuse of a geocacher back in the groove. This can only be a good thing :)

Last night's show we had owner of GPSTracklog.com aka Rich Owings as our guest. Rich has been running GPSTracklog.com since 2005 and has a vast knowledge of a geocachers bestest buddy the GPSr unit. During our discussion we talked about many of the available GPSr units and the different price ranges and functional capabilities. This is a perfect episode to listen to if you are planning on purchasing a new GPSr or want to spread the information to your significant other cuz the holidays are coming right around the corner. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink.

Overall a very informative show and you really need to give it a listen when it is released in the next couple of days.

The Geocaching Podcast is recorded LIVE every Wednesday at 9:30PM ET. You can be a part of the show by going to the Geocaching Podcast Website and clicking 'Live' to enter the Talkshoe client. You can also download all the published shows from the Geocaching Podcast Website and many of your favorite podcatcher sites and applications.

What Is Geocaching To Headhardhat?

In a recent interview I was asked, "What is Geocaching to HeadHardHat?".  I have to admit that the question threw me off balance for a moment or two. You see normally I simply get asked, "What is Geocaching?" but this was what is Geocaching to me. That my fellow reader is quite the open question. Here is the jist of what I replied.

Geocaching to me has many faceted sides. There is the personal escape I love when Geocaching allows me the freedom to choose what type of adventure I wish to pursue that day. For example, if I want to explore a new place I have never been to before, all I have to do is look for Geocaches in that area. If I want to solve puzzles or use my cognitive skills to shake out the cobwebs there are tons of Geocaches hidden to do that. Then there is the walk in the woods for a few discoveries or go for the numbers and snag a bunch of park and grabs. It's all there for the finding.

One of my favorite facets to Geocaching has to be the outlet of making Geocaches to hide. I just love either seeing a technique used by another geocacher and thinking, "That is so cool but what if you do this..." or to come up with a cool concept and show it to other geocachers and watch how they take it and mold it to something even better. That always gives me a rush.  That is one of the reasons I make the GeoSnippits videos I do. Not to blow my own horn and say look at what I created but to plant the seed with a fellow Cacher and watch them go crazy with the idea.

Another side of Geocaching for me is the huge social network that is available to geocachers around the world be it Twitter, Facebook, Google +, Geocaching forums, Geocaching events and just plain calling a local Cacher and saying, "Let's Go Geocaching". There are so many ways to communicate with someone in this game, sport and obsession that literally spands the globe.  I cannot tell you how many invitations I have received over the years from geocachers in other countries and within the United States that give out the welcome hand of friendship just because of this common bond for finding Tupperware in the Woods. It's amazing.

Finally there is the presence in the media where I can help spread the word about Geocaching. It all started making a YouTube video about bison tubes and the next thing you know GeoSnippits Geocaching Tutorials was born. Now I have dozens of Geocaching information tidbits to help the Geocaching community enjoy our activity even more. Throw in an award winning blog "Geocache: I'm Not Obsessed... Right?" and after years of expressing my experiences and insights it has turned into a fountain of searchable information also geared to help the Geocaching community.

Now I am co-host on the Geocaching Podcast a weekly talk show where myself, XpunkX and Darrylw4 bring up interesting discussions about our favorite past-time. Then there is the features of being on Michigan Magazine TV (RFD.tv) and now having my own TV show Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) where co-host and fellow geocacher Courtney Wallin and I bring up our own experiences and helpful information each and every week.

So from all of this and so much more, Geocaching to me is the cumulative blood, sweat and tears that makes Headhardhat get up each day and know something new is always just around the corner. It is a whole lot of work but a whole lot of fun as well and I wouldn't have it any other way. Geocaching is my life and for however long it lasts I am going to embrace the opportunities and adventures it gives me.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - EP. 246 - GeoWoodstock X

That's right boys and girls. The grand daddy of geocaching events Geowoodstock turns ten this year and they are taking it right back to it's roots by hosting at Sellersburg, Indiana. This makes it literally about 9 miles from the very first Geowoodstock event.

During tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast you could just feel the excitement from two of the event committee from GWX who were our guests on the show. Both Daggy and Ronny answered all of our questions that we thought would bring the most value to you our listeners. The whole crew was here tonight so XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself (HeadHardHat) really enjoyed ourselves as the show progressed.

I don't want to give everything away but I think it is important for everybody to know that registration for Geowoodstock X ends on April 15th. So be sure to get your registration package, err, well, registered.

The Mega event is held this year on May 26th, 2012. Don't you dare miss it. I know that I will be there so be sure to stop by and say hi!

You can get more information about Geowoodstock X from their website at:
http://www.geowoodstock.com/gws10/index.html

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST.

The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

 See you next week!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep.#240 - Alternate Trackable Services

Had a full crew and another great show tonight when doing our latest rendition of the Geocaching Podcast. Our latest episode was all about Alternate Trackable Services. Sometimes we have subjects for the show that when you realize it is a topic of discussion and you think to yourself. "There is no way we are going to get a full show out of that." This was the case with tonight's show but one of the great things about XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself is we can have an active discussion about pretty much anything. So if we need filler we can pull it out of thin air. Long story, short we had more than enough to discuss and some left over. Always a great thing.

This episode discussed a lot about Darrylw4's current obsession with figuring out sixty some puzzle caches and my move to my new residence. Another large chunk of discussion was about GeoKrety, Where's George, Serentripiti and other traveler web sites. To get all the details be sure to listen to the entire show when it comes out.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast: Ep. #239 February Cacher Coffee

Boy did it feel good to be back in the saddle again by doing the Geocaching Podcast last night. After being away for a few weeks I really missed not talking with Darrylw4 and XpunkX. Unfortunately XpunkX was not able to be part of our February Cacher Coffee but our friend TheBadCop was.

The show this week we spoke in depth about the demise of the GeoMate Jr. GPSr product line and our suspicions as to how this unique niche unit could be discontinued in such a manner.

We also discussed the introduction of CacheSence for the Android smartphone. This was formerly CacheBerry for the BlackBerry phone.

I don't want to spoil the show so that is all I will bring up for today's Behind The Scenes of the Geocaching Podcast. You will just have to download it and enjoy when it becomes available either today or tomorrow.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Ep. 234 January Cacher Coffee

Wow, here we are in 2012 and we started this year with a really great show tonight on the Geocaching Podcast. This episode was our Cacher Coffee which is kind of a laid back chit chat between XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself HeadHardHat with help of our listeners in the chat room and a Google plus hang out.

Tonight's episode dealt with several key discussions which became the show. First after our general banter we went right into what turned out to be an important issue for XpunkX in regard to geocaching log deletion. I was rather surprised with the circumstances for this situation and the following discussion that ensued.

Next among several topics was a discussion from Darrylw4 in regards to filling out your geocaching day calendar. More specifically with the semi-rare opportunity of finding a geocache on February 29th. Another great discussion which included our chat room came from that.

Another key discussion area touched Geocaching.com's removal of the word Munzee from all geocache description pages and what does this really mean with any type of advertisement like content.

We did finally do the Badelf drawing... You are just going to have to listen to our Geocaching Podcast episode when it comes out in a day or two. Be sure to stay tuned.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - EP #232 - Christmas Gift Episode

Heavy sigh,
I really cannot talk enough about our hosting site TalkShoe which we use while recording our weekly Geocaching Podcast show. I remember way back when I was just an avid listener and all the buffering issues, lock ups and other asunder headaches it caused when used.  Then when actually being a member of the show itself there were constant issue with connectivity, sounding like a Cylon and just plain getting it so one can speak, be heard and then actually hear the show itself. In a word - nightmare. It seems like just about every week TalkShoe does an update and then something goes flaky (IT term). I don't change the hardware configuration on that box so this is all TalkShoe. Anyways, last night was no exception.

Just before the show I start logging in. I noticed that TalkShoe was doing another update so I grit my teeth and hoped for the best. In the words from Sheldon (The Big Bang Show) - BA-ZINGA! I heard two words from the show, there was a slight pop and then nothing. Couldn't hear anything from the hosts who also seemed to be working their issues out at the time. Nor could anyone hear me. So I exit TalkShoe - another update happens - same thing. I go out and in again - same. Finally I reboot my entire system, yet another update and low and behold with about 30 seconds before the show was to start I finally get in. Phew! I was getting really frustrated because I knew that Co-Hosts Darrylw4 and XpunkX would be divvying up my parts and I really wanted to be a part of the holiday gift list show. So just saying that this particular set of issues was a new one for TalkShoe the frustrations with them continue from week to week and so if you ever wonder why we may sound a bit frazzled at the beginning of the show that is most likely why.

Okay on with the show... so to speak. The banter was light tonight because we had so much to talk about. We know that many geocachers and significant others are anxious to hear our holiday gift list for those last minute holiday gift ideas they may need. We are always all too happy to pass on what we find. In tonight's show we went well over 20 different items from the tangible like new GPSr units to the intangible like being given Time to do some guilt free geocaching.

There was a lot of information discussed all laced with personal experience from each of us. Pretty great insights if I say so myself. At any rate you will just have to listen to the entire show which will be out at any second and make your own observations. There are also links to all the items we discussed in the show notes when published. Please feel free to check them out.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

See you next week!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Ep. 230 - Creative Cache Containers II

Tons of the usual stuff goings on with the Geocaching Podcast. Tonight's episode started out with the news that Darrylw4 has been sick for most of the week so it was only going to be XpunkX and myself. No biggie in that regards but it is always that much nicer when we are all on together.

Next Talkshoe did what it does best by having some buffer issues. So when I was right into the middle of a really good roll of content I had to be stopped because I was breaking up too much. Problem it wasn't me but everybody was breaking up. You could tell because many people had to disconnect and log back in. I think it was only pure luck that we didn't get logged off like usual.

The banter part of the show went off really well. XpunkX talked about his Thanksgiving and meeting up with fellow geocacher jeepin_idaho and his family. Whilest I did not get too much actual geocaching in but instead chilled out and enjoyed some solid holiday time.

I did get a real kick being able to talk about XpunkX's son Micah did his TV debut on my show Geocaching World and that we showed of video of Micah putting out his first geocache. That and the fact that his first hide was based off of one of my GeoSnippits PVC geocaches. Micah was so cute and we are so happy putting this first moment out on the show.
Geocaching World Episode: http://rvnewsnet.com/2011/11/29/thing-a-ma-bobs-geocaching-style/

Tonight's episode was about Creative Geocaches. We talked about so much and shared so many great hides. We discussed how creative geocaches can blend in so well in the environment. Then other geocaches that are hidden in plain sight. To many examples to mention here so you will just have to listen to the podcast. Lessee what else? Creative puzzle geocaches like the ones the Dirtbag Geocaching Society place or other ones that are unique like the one that Echo6Charlie is going to send into space. So much content and so little time. Again go listen to it when it comes out in the next day or two.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Ep. 227 November Cacher Coffee

Tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast was our November Cacher Coffee. What we do on the Cacher Coffee is just sit back and talk about just about anything. The idea is to give the people in the chat room or the Google Hang Out we normally have going a chance to talk during the show.

Our banter was pretty basic with one really cool note that XpunkX's son will be putting out his first geocache which is one of the PVC hydrants he had seen in one of my GeoSnippits videos.

When we do our Cacher Coffee any geocaching subject can come up. A large discussion came from a viewer email that dealt with geocaching during hunting season. Each of us had our own viewpoints which of course will be interpreted by you the viewers. There is no one correct answer and we just love bringing up many of the possibilities to discuss.

The next discussion also came from a listener who was trying to decide if they should put away his mobile phone for something else. This turned into a great GPSr discussion. I took it a bit further and wanted to know the thoughts of XpunkX and Darrylw4 about what would be popular for the up and coming holiday season. This then turned into a discussion about Winter Geocaching. Like I said anything goes in a Cacher Coffee.

It was a really great show and you really should give it a listen when it comes out in the next day or two.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Ep. 226 - Canine Consideration

I am sitting here listening to my recorded track of tonight's Geocaching Podcast which is kinda weird in a way. We just finished recording the show that I am able to hear completely while we actually talk and then to hear just my track which is used for the final cut misses everything but what I actually say. It does though give me enough information that I can write this post. But I digress...

Tonight it was just Darrylw4 and myself Andy HeadHardHat Smith. XpunkX was out doing family stuff and could not make it. We and more precisely Darrylw4 missed him lots because not only did he have to mind the board he had to say a lot of the meta-content that XpunkX normally does as well. You never know how difficult it can be until  you actually have to do it.. Great job Darryl.

This was a fun episode on several levels for me personally. Our guest for the show is North Carolina based geocacher NCBiscuit. This is a geocaching team where Linda (NC) pairs up with her partner Biscuit who happens to be a fun loving Golden Retriever. I have been friends with Linda and Biscuit for many years and it was a real pleasure having her on.

Over the course of the show we discussed many things our viewers have asked about geocaching with your pets. Things like the amount of training that may be needed for your pooch - and you. Safety and First Aid tips, helpful hints and a whole bunch more. You will have to listen to the whole show to get all the information but you will be so glad you did.

If you listen you will actually hear my dog during the recording. How fitting is that when discussing our pets while geocaching. So as I wrap this post up my dog Emily gently rests her head on my knee and looks up at me. Tail wagging and then that gentle but routine doggie fart, her tail wags a bit faster. Boy, what we do when dealing with our pets, but hey we wouldn't have it any other way.

Time to let the pooch out the back door. You can hear the entire episode in the next day or two. Be sure to give us a listen - phew Emmy - OUTSIDE!

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Until Next Week.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Ep. #225 - Caching Devices for All Levels

Tonight's show started out with it's usual quirkiness. This time not TalkShoe related which is surprising in itself was weird. Things like the recording software I use failed to start when it was supposed to. I like using the AVS4YOU brand of editing software and for Windows 7 it has been working exceptionally well. Except tonight when I hit record and it would not record. Always fun when everyone else is ready to go and you are sitting there going, umm, it no work... Anywho, I shut down the program and restarted it and everything worked just hunky dory.

In our early show banter I pretty much had the geocaching conversation piece this week by attending the Geocoinfest 2011 US in Rock Hill, SC. Where I attended the three day Mega geocaching event.
Special Note From HHH: I really wanted to say thank you to all the really great listeners of the Geocaching Podcast who came up and said hi while I was down there. It was so great to meet all of you and thanks again!

Neither XpunkX nor Darrylw4 was able to get in too much geocaching this last week but the weather has been pretty ugly in the northern states. Of course I say this while listening to the trees blowing and the rain coming down in sheets here in Raleigh. Sigh.

Tonight's episode dealt with the different types of geocachers out there and the possible GPSr units that we felt would work best for them. Now this is not saying XpunkX, Darrylw4 and HHH said you must go out and use these types but if you are in the market of getting a GPSr these would be some you might want to consider. We pretty much ran the gammit from the very beginner geocacher to the one who wants everything. If you want to gather all the information we discussed you are going to have to listen to the entire show which will be coming out in the next day or so. So stay tuned.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Until Next Week.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. 224 - Hosting Geocaching 101 Events

Well for me at least,  the build up for tonight's show was not necessarily because of the content for the show which was about what to do to Host a Geocaching 101 Event. No that was a given for me. Especially since I specialize in creating videos (GeoSnippits Videos) for said subject. What had me going was even before doing the show itself. You see I am almost happy with my Blue Yeti microphone when it comes to doing recordings. It is amazingly sensitive and can pick up a flea breaking wind ten feet away. The problem is that IT IS so sensitive that you can pick up a flea breaking wind ten feet away. I know I need it for when I record Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) because it gives me the freedom to move around in front of the camera and not have a big mike in front of me. What could I do to get a little more mike control? Well I ended up purchasing a M-Audio MobilePre and a new standard dynamic microphone. Now while I do pod-casting I can have a better sounding voice and not have to worry about picking up any more flea flatulence.

Long story short (too late). I purchased everything yesterday and put it together on Computer Number Two. The surprising thing to me is that it all worked the first time. Even when it came to hooking into the show's chat room venue TalkShoe.  I set up the hardware, loaded new software, tested it and bingo-bongo I had a working mike on a boom. No one was more surprised than me but I love it when a plan comes together.

Tonight's show we had the usual suspects of XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself Andy HeadHardHat Smith with special guest TheBadCop. To start off the show Darrylw4 talked about his heavier than usual set of geocaching activities which included a 5/5 cache along with TeamLegend4. XpunkX discussed all the great weather they had so they could go out geocaching and I discussed the soon to be Geocoinfest 2011 US which is coming up this weekend and the NCGO Fall Fling which is coming up the end of October.

After the News and Geocaching Question of the Day all four of us had a grand time discussing the finer points of presenting a geocaching 101 class. Including the high points and thing to avoid if at all possible. Each of us have hosted these types of geocaching gatherings and had useful thoughts based on the experiences. There was plenty of great discussions that you really should hear the entire episode.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST.
The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. 220 - Review of Bad-Elf GPSr

Tonight we had a full crew so Darrylw4, XpunkX and I were there for your geocaching pleasure. The show was very informative with XpunkX leading the way with his review of the Bad-Elf GPSr products. Basically it is a device that can attach to just about any iOS device giving it GPS capabilities.

The chat room was a bit on the quiet side tonight even though we had a full crowd in there. Rare but does happen. All the more to have talk next week.

Speaking of which, see you next week!

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST.

The recorded episode will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep. #219 - September Cacher Coffee

Had a really great show last night with the Geocaching Podcast, even though we were down a co-host. Darrylw4 was not up to snuff so it was left to XpunkX and myself to carry the proverbial torch with this month's Cacher Coffee.

Personally I think we had a great time and the Live chat-room was really a buzz with discussion.

Topics of choice included some of the good ole basics like proper geocaching basics, travelers and adopting a geocache. During XpunkX's and my commentary there were a lot of information coming from the chat room and over the phone. The time literally flew by and the next thing I knew we were wrapping up. Always happens when things click.

All I can say is you don't want to miss this episode of the Geocaching Podcast and it should be out and available in the next day or so.

Or you can hear it right now... This just in..

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - #218 Geocaching Challenges Update

Tonight's show was one of those shows which is a bit bitter sweet. We once again were fortunate to have Eric Schudiske from Groundspeak. The discussion topic was the new Geocaching Challenges and how things were progressing. The sweet part is how Groundspeak is attempting to introduce a new type of geocache. The bitter part is that the geocaching.com community is not exactly taking to the concepts with open minds.

IMHO, one of the main issues is geocachers want virtuals, the new Geocaching Challenges are not virtuals. Then you have people getting either confused about what Challenges actually are and others trying to make the Challenges "fit" to what they want which will also not work. This can only promote negative feelings which is not what Groundspeak wants.

This also makes an interesting situation when trying to conduct an interview. It's not Eric's fault, he is really a great guy and spokesman for Groundspeak. It is the situation that is difficult to balance and yet get good information and content out of.

I highly recommend you give this episode a good listen. I think it will answer a lot of questions you may have about Challenges and the reasoning behind them via Groundspeak.

The Geocaching Podcast is recorded each and every week at 9:30pm EST. Be sure to meet up in our chat room and not only listen to the show as it is being recorded but also contribute your insights. We look forward to seeing you there.

NOTE: Next week is our Cacher Coffee. This is when we open up the chat room mikes to our listeners to talk about a whole host of geocaching discussions. See you next week.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - #217 - Underground Geocaching

Tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast was one of those ones where you can just close your eyes and imagine geocaching in underground tunnels and what if must be like actually doing that.

Now for me personally I have done a few tunnel hides and they to be frank were tame in comparison to what fellow geocachers and guests Freekacher and Blaze132 have done. Some of the water drain tunnels they have followed were over half a mile underground. Gets me all Indiana Jones just thinking about it. This is definitely not for everyone. In fact, they are the first ones to tell you that if you feel uncomfortable in any way - Don't Do It!

We had a lot of great discussion. Both XpunkX and Darrylw4 seemed just as enthralled in their tales of adventure as myself. The very cool thing is both Freekacher and Blaze132 live just southwest of me and invited me to join them on some they will be doing very soon. Let's just say that I am now very pumped and will be getting some great video of our explorations for you all to enjoy. Either that or you will be seeing a grown man in the fetal position crying for his mommy. Either way great video.

So be sure to catch this weeks edition of the Geocaching Podcast and hear all the really cool subterranean things Freekacher and Blaze132 have gone through. Plus, some of the things you will need to consider if you want to venture out while doing underground geocaching for yourself.
