Geocaching Quick Tips: The Difference Between Geocaching Travelers, Trackables and Swag

With the ever growing number of items in the geocaching world that can have tracking numbers on them. It would be a good time to go over the differences between Geocaching Travelers, Trackables and Swag. Then let you know as a geocacher what you should do with them if found.

Geocaching Travelers:
These are usually Travel Bugs and Geocoins. Travelers go from geocache to geocache on what ever goal that is specifically given to them. THEY ARE NOT SWAG and are the personal property of their owners.

These toys have a special ID tag and go from geocache to geocache.
They are called Travel Bugs or Travelers
You can tell if they are travelers by the unique id code either stamped on them (geocoins) or a special tag is attached to the item (travel bugs).  These id numbers are unique to each traveler and can be tracked on geocaching.com. Many have specific goals and/or destinations they wish to achieve. All of the geocaches they enter or exit from is marked specifically for that traveler and can have the entire history shown on a map of the world. If a traveler is found you may take it from the geocache (or event), log that you have it and then place it in another geocache with the intent of helping it with it's goal. A geocacher should only hold onto a traveller for a couple of weeks before releasing it back into the wild.

Geocaching Trackables:
These items are very similar to Geocaching Travellers as they also have a unique id code associated with them. They are also trackable on geocaching.com. The main difference between a trackable and a traveler is that the items associated to the id code do not go from geocache to geocache.

The License Plate on our wall is a Trackable Item
The aforementioned trackable items can be just about anything but usually do include t-shirts, automobile stick on's, license plates, geocaching memorabilia, etc.  Basically anything you can put a trackable id number on can become a trackable. Trackable items are property of their owners and should only be "Discovered" when logged at geocaching.com.

Geocaching Swag:
Tradable swag are items placed in geocaches by other geocachers. Most range from kids toys, trinkets, dollar items, etc. There is one exception that has an id code and is still considered tradable swag, those are known as Path Tags. These quarter sized items have a small hole in them and on the back a unique id code. These are tracked at www.pathtags.com. Even though they sort of look like mini geocoins they are not and if you find one, you can keep it. Trade for equal or better like any other swag but they are collectable.

These are Path Tags and even though they have an ID number they are considered SWAG
So there you have it.

  • Travelers "travel" from one geocache to the next and are personal property of their owners. They have a unique id code attached.
  • Trackables are items that have a unique id code and do not travel from one geocache to the next.
  • Swag usually does not have unique id codes except for path tags and are swappable items you can trade when found in a geocache for equal or better value.

Please respect the items you find in geocaches and ensure that they safely go from geocache to the next if they are travelers. Trade swag for equal or better value with what you find. Enjoy all these geocaching game pieces and the adventures they take.

Geocaching Quick Tips: Placing A Geocache BEFORE it is Published

Geocaching Quick Tips: Placing A Geocache BEFORE it is Published

I have found this to be a truly newbie geocache issue.

Filling out and submitting a new geocache hide and not actually place the geocache BEFORE it is actually Published.

I have found the reason it tends to be a newbie issue is if you are the hider and actually have this happen you will get some unkind logs. If you are the possible finder you most likely will be placing a non favorable note to the hider stating your displeasure. For the hider you most likely do this only once.

So what happens:
An FTF Hound or geocacher receives a notification stating a new geocache was just published.
The race is on! How far away are you from the new geocache? How quickly can you get to ground zero and how many other geocachers could get there before you?  Tally Ho.

First To Find hounds all want to be signer number one and enjoy the bragging rights of "Clean Sheets".
Except for one problem. The geocache was not put in it's hiding spot by the hider.

Absolutely maddening to geocachers. Nobody wants to go for a fresh find and have to mark a Did Not Find. Especially if it hasn't been actually placed yet.

So a very good Geocaching Quick Tip is to actually place the geocache in it's hidey whole BEFORE you actually publish the cache page. A very common response from new geocacher is, "I didn't realize it would be published so quickly".

Don't take the chance and hide your geocache first! We would be very appreciative.

When HeadHardHat Says "Poke It With A Stick" Here's Why...

You have heard Andy HeadHardHat Smith state on his videocasts, podcasts and videos to always check before reaching into an unknown or unseen area. HeadHardHat always tells fellow geocachers to "Poke It With A Stick".

Well when you check out the photo for today's geocaching adventures you can see why.

Young Female Black Widow on Geocache

This is a young female Black Widow that was clutching it's nest which just happened to be on the lid of a geocache HeadHardHat was going for today as #14 of the 31 Days of Geocaching. Fortunately it was on the opposite side of the geocache that was reached for but could have very easily bitten when attempting to take off the top.

All of this was caught on video and will be on HeadHardHat's Vlog tonight. Check out Day 14 of the 31 Days of Geocaching Series. Here is the link to the playlist.
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSyBeevfv1MzOX1sVvtq7qlvpRPQeaiCs

The episode should air later tonight (8/14/2013). So keep and eye out or subscribe to HHH's You Tube Channel to be sure and get all of his geocaching videos.

See you then!

What Geocaching goals do you have for 2013?

The year 2013 is quickly approaching and now that we are apparently going to stick around for a while longer, it begs the big question...

What Geocaching goals do you have for 2013?

Is it a particular number of Geocache finds in a day? A state challenge to fulfill? How about a number of days in a row goal? What ever you are going for in the upcoming year we want to know it. Maybe you will inspire others to go for it as well... Greatness!

A Munzee Benchmark

Had an absolute blast today on a gorgeous fall day here in Raleigh, North Carolina. The temps were near 70 with an abundance of sunshine. So I just had to go out and get some geocaching/Munzee Hunting done.

Below you can see my Munzee attack route for the day. It was great, not only were the hides done very well with a minimum of searching required but it didn't take all afternoon to do the run. In fact it only took about 40 minutes or so. Awesome.

A dozen Munzee sweep
Oh sure don't get me wrong I love geocaching and taking those long walks on the greenways or enjoying the woods in all their glory. Though when it comes to urban hides where all you have to do is walk up and do a click and scoot, there is nothing like it.

As an added bonus I also was able to do a benchmark find as well. The hider of the Munzee saw fit to point it out which was very much appreciated. See below.
Benchmark near a Munzee hide
Well the afternoon is young and while I wait to see what this evening will bring in weekend activity I think I am going to head back out for some geocaching. So, what are your geocaching plans this weekend?

Everything You Wanted Know About Geocaching Swag

Random geocaching tidbit for the day: Everything You Wanted Know About Geocaching Swag

Ahh Swag, the "treasure" in geocaching treasure hunting. Sometimes you can find some really cool stuff in a geocache. Sometimes not so much. Just remember that value is in the eye of the beholder. Also in the beholder that knows what they are looking at. There are plenty of examples of real treasures being found. Just to remember to trade for equal or better value to keep the tradition of swag going. If you want to find out what all the attraction to swag is then please read on.

Below is a link to the complete post I did recently on the subject. Enjoy.

Check out the post in it's entirety here -> http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2009/09/everything-you-want-to-know-about.html

Each day we will pull an interesting geocaching tidbit from HeadHardHat's Blog - Geocache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? With over five years of information you can search your geocaching questions as well.

The Geocachers Creed

The Geocachers Creed is a voluntary set of guidelines that describes how geocachers in general should act.

Below is the Geocachers Creed highlighted in bold and some general thoughts for each point. If you have more I would love to hear your insights.

The Geocachers Creed

When placing or seeking geocaches, I will:

Not endanger myself or others.
- placing a geocache in an area or situation that could hurt or possibly hurt someone else
- knowing your limits and not exceeding them while Geocaching
 - using the proper equipment when needed

Observe all laws & rules of the area.
- you do not have the right to break the law or enforced guidelines
- parking where not allowed
- trespassing is wrong
- out of bounds or during posted times (parks) - sunrise, sunset.

Respect property rights and seek permission where appropriate.
- No Trespassing means No Trespassing
- Landscaping and muggle trails
- Get written permission from land owner

Avoid causing disruptions or public alarm.
- bomb like Geocaches or caches that may seem suspicious
- looking suspicious when Geocaching
- speeding away from the area

Minimize my and others' impact on the environment.
- Leave No Trace
- Muggle Trails
- Think Before You Search

Be considerate of others.
- The Golden Rule

Protect the integrity of the game pieces.
- Protect travel bugs and geocoins
- Clean inappropriate materials from caches
- Repair when broken or full - Emergency Geocache Repair Kit

Most if not all of these are guidelines we can easily apply to not only geocaching but our everyday lives as well. I hope you found them useful.

See you out on the trails!

Did You Look Before You Leap Day Geocached?

Hey, just in case you didn't know it's leap day!

If you are a geocacher and more importantly a geocacher that is trying to fill up their geocaching calendar (basically taking credit for finding at least one geocache for every calendar day of the year). Then this is a chance that only happens once every four years.

So if you have not found a geocache on February 29th yet you better hurry. Cuz your next chance won't be until 2016.

Don't forget!

P.S. found mine during my lunch hour at work. -HHH

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Episode #30 Paperless Geocaching Meet and Greet

Tonight's episode of Geocaching World was once again a Meet and Greet format which meant it is a whole lot less formal overall. Creative Director Dave Dufour and myself like doing the show this way. Mainly because we can interact directly with the folks in the chat room. This is great because we can start on a particular subject and the chat room can direct in a way how the show goes. It is a lot of fun.

Because this format is a lot less formal we can give away a lot more prizes which is always great with the chat room and our viewers. This week we gave a really nice cami bison tube from GxProxy.com which went to Pingvoyager who is a regular in the chat room. We also showed a bunch of photos that were sent in for the Vonage: Time To Call contest we have been running all week. It showed geocachers doing what they do best. The entries that were sent in goes into a drawing that one lucky winner will win a brand new iPad 2. The drawing is Saturday, September 3, 2011.

The meat of discussion with today's show dealt with Paperless Geocaching. We went over the general history of paperless geocaching and how it and GPSrs has developed over the years. We talked about everything from PDAs, Netbooks, Tablets, Smart Phones and other applications.

The second prize we gave out was really cool. For the Vonage contest there is a limit of one entry per person. The prize we did here was who ever sent in the correct answer from the chat room would win ten entries to possibly win the iPad2. Viewer AVToolman was the viewer with the correct answer.

There is a whole lot of great discussion and other valuable information in the show itself. Be sure to check it out when it becomes available in iTunes in the next day or so.

Enjoy.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Ep. 29 - Create Your Own Geocache Meet and Greet

Wow, what a night! So many fantastic things going all at once for this episode of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv).

First off this was the very first time that we ran LIVE video as we recorded on both RVNN.tv and the TechPodcast Network at the same time. Next we are starting our Fall recording schedule so our new night is Thursdays at 6:30pm EST.

Finally we are a part of a Vonage IPad2 Giveaway. In tonight's episode one lucky winner in our chat room won 10 total chances to win the Vonage prize. Another slight change we presented this episode with a geocacher's Meet and Greet style to it. A bit more casual and a bunch more interaction with the chatroom. It was definitely different but a lot of fun.

I think the people in the chat room had a lot more fun as well. The discussions for today included making your own geocaches for example we talked about my Evil Ant Hill Geocache which we showed how we made it out of bondo. Then we went over a whole set of PVC geocaches and finished with my Evil Resin Geocaches. For prizes our winners were Collin who won a Cache-A-Maniacs Podcast Geocoin and Scott won the 10 chances to win the Vonage IPad2. If you want to put in your chance to win the IPad2. Go to RVNN.tv's website, my blog (GeoCache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right?) or my GeoSnippits website for all the details or watch tonight's show should be out by the time you are reading this. Did I mention that the commercial we used during the show featured me as I describe the Vonage product Time To Call and the giveaway contest? Way cool!

Also during this show we had some great photos sent in from the chatroom. I am not going to spoil and tell everything but one of them was how David Clark made a Cryptex geocache. You really need to see this! After that Dave Dufour, Courtney Wallin, Andy McCaskey and myself Andy HeadHardHat Smith did our daily episode of RVNN Live.

Made for a very full evening and a whole lot of fun. Judging from the chat room they had fun and I hope we made a whole lot of new friends on the TechPodcast as well.

See you next week!

Geocaching World is recorded LIVE each week on Thursday's at 6:30pm EST. Be a part of the show by joining our chat room on RVNN.tv.
