Caches With Wolves - Warren Andrews

Received a really nice email from Warren Andrews who while geocaching, discovered a wolf sanctuary in South Salem, New York.

Check these photos out:

I believe this should state that
All Trespassers Shall Be Eaten!

Some fenced in pens..

Here is a news article explaining about this amazing spot:

Our "Obsessed" Blog Is Looking Good on Google Currents

Our Award Winning Geocaching "Obsessed" Blog via Google Currents on iPad2

I was really pleased with the Google Currents app on the iPad2 from the moment I set my eyes on it.  It has a really nice interface and smooth feel too it. For those who may not know Google Currents is an information aggregation application with connections to many top notch media portals. It also allows RSS feed via Google Reader. So just for kicks I loaded my Geocache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? blog and was very impressed how quickly it synced and how nice it looks.

What really impressed me was how great it is being a Google application on the iPad2. I have been waiting for the iPad2 optimized Google+ app and quite frankly... still waiting. If Currents is an indication of things to come then the updated Google+ can come non too soon.

If you would like to include our award winning geocaching blog with your favorite RSS feeds you can get it right here:

Our Blog Is A Winner In The 2010 Golden Retrevo Awards

There I was drinking my coffee and checking out my blog stats when I noticed a link that caught my eye. It showed that a user came from the golden-retrevo-awards-winners page.

Hmmm, wondered what that was so I decided to check it out. Much to my delight and surprise was this very cool looking web page from Retrevo that had several different categories and one of them had my blog name. Apparently GeoCache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? has won in the category of GPS Units. Below is a snippet from the web site.

Welcome to the first annual Golden Retrevo Awards; honoring the best and brightest independent gadget blogs on the web. This year's winners were selected by Retrevo's panel of judges and also chosen by votes from the general public.

If you would like to see the other winners as well please follow the link below. I would like to thank Retrevo for this fine award and everyone who voted for us. We will be beaming for months to come.

I Blog Therefore I am...

I was asked in a recent interview why I enjoy blogging so much and the answer is simple. If I didn't have blogging as a creative outlet for self expression I would simply explode like a New Years Eve party favor. It is a great way to express my thoughts for those who enjoy reading them. The very cool thing is that there are a whole lot of you out there.. Thanks for being there by the way!

I blog, therefore I am. It is a mission statement for me, a goal that serves a purpose not only for myself but to the benefit of others as well. My passion is Geocaching and there is so much to blog about it. I have been blogging about geocaching for over two years now and there is no end in sight. Not only do I tell all the visual experiences of my adventures but I relay what I have learned and pass it on so others can learn from my successes and failures. Many times with rather comical consequences, ah well, all part of the fun.

So why do I Blog?
As stated above I need a creative outlet and blogging allows me to be me without fear of judgement. Don't like what I write or how I write it? Go someplace else. Don't go away mad, just go away. I write for me and if others find entertaining information or tid-bits from it all the better. I seem to connect with a rather wide range of folks which is great with me. I am not what you would call an eloquent speaker. I tell what is on my mind and in my heart. One reader who I met face to face actually stated "Wow, you really do talk that way". I smiled and said, "Yep, that's me".

What is my target audience?
This took the longest time to figure out because I didn't know what type of reader my craziness would attract. The answer is I am a family style writer. I realized quite quickly that not only did the adult geocaching readers visit my sites but the kids love it too. Once I realized how many younger readers there were I made a pact with myself that this and all my sites were family orientated only. Sure I will slip in a PG-13 photo or comment every once in a while but kids viewing is always a number one importance to me.

How Has GeoSnippits Influenced My Blogging?
My GeoSnippits Videos are yet another creative outlet for me. We now have over forty tutorial videos for the world of geocaching. Those videos are seen literally all around the world. Not only that but I also make exclusive GeoSnippits segments for television. The show it is seen on is Michigan Magazine (RFDTV Network) and is shown in all 50 states twice a week. As far as I am aware right now GeoSnippits is the only regularly shown geocaching show on television. I guess that makes me sort of a pioneer getting the word out about our game, sport, obsession.

My blog is filled with GeoSnippits information. Many times I use my blog to back fill what you see in the GeoSnippits videos. Things that I do not have time to include or to flesh out key points. Even though we do not yet have a blooper reel for GeoSnippits many times you can read about all the behind the scenes things that happen. Always a good read.

So there you have it a bit of background as to why I do what I do when it comes to blogging. It is a fun and needed way for me to express myself through the passing of knowledge. Add in a sprinkling of humor and you end up with something people around the world want to read. Go figure.

See you out on the trails... -HHH

Small World For Wolfgang Von PitterPat

Oh this is just way too cool. A few days ago I was paroozing around the Internet looking at geocaching articles within blogs. I just happened to run across The Travelling Trainers - Leave No Trace Blog and what instantly caught my eye was the photo of a travel bug. It was of a penguin that looked exactly like my daughter Miss Geoness's Wolfgang Von PitterPat.

So I end up writing to the authors and asked if this was indeed Wolfgang. I just received the following email from them:

"Hey HeadHardHat! Yes, the TB in our picture and until this morning in our Subaru is none other than Wolfgang Von PitterPat! Very exciting, tell your daughter that he is doing great and check back soon for more pictures and another blog about Von Pitterpat's adventure with the Subaru/Leave No Trace traveling trainers! "

What a small world.

Now the shot itself is gorgeous and you will have to go to the link below to see their article:
it is well worth the read and you may even help decide where Wolfgang goes next. Check it out!

Keeping It In The Family - Smith Brother's Geocaching

The family that caches together, stays together... Okay well maybe I'm 900 miles away but my spirit sure is with my two brothers who started geocaching recently. Scott and David both live in Michigan with the rest of my family whilst I reside in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Earlier in the year I had a great time taking Scott (shown left with a considerable amount less of grey hairs) caching around the east side of the Great Lake State. There is nothing that brings out the competitive side in us when it is one sibling against another, all in good fun of course. Can we say bragging rights?!? It really was a fun afternoon and he will be becoming a full blown member soon.

Then there is my youngest brother David. Not only did he just get a new GPS but started caching a few weeks back. He and his family are going out and about having a complete blast. David who goes by TurtleExpress liked my blog so much decided to start one up of his own. The title say it all: Geocaching with Turtleexpress. You can see the smiles on my nephew's faces as they proudly show off their finds. Makes me a bit home sick and then I remember that I did not have to shovel once last winter. Plus I can cache here all year round.. Oh well so much for sentament.. They can always come here for a week and play in the back woods and swamps...

Feel Free to check out TurtleExpress's blog here or in my list of blogs on the right side of the page. Click --> Geocaching With TurtleExpress.

Hopefully sometime next year we can all get together for a Geocache Weekend. That mini Flash Mob will be something to see. Hope where ever we go is ready for all three Smith Brother's in one spot. Lord knows other areas are still recovering from past get togethers.

HeadHardHat's Ingenious Cache Inventor Blog Released

I really enjoy my "I'm NOT Obsessed" blog but I wanted another way of specializing one particular aspect of Geocaching. That would be a dedicated blog for the creation and discussion of making caches.
With this blog anyone can submit anything geocache "cache" related. Be it a how-to tutorial about camouflaging ammo boxes to the most ingenious caches you have ever found. We will take on all cachers.
The blog is called "HeadHardHat's Ingenious Cache Inventor" and you can go there by clicking here: http://ingenious-cache-inventor.blogspot.com/. I hope you enjoy sharing that little mad scientist in all of us.
