Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN) - EP #916 - Cleaning Out The Video Closet

My head is still swimming from all the fun we had last night as we recorded Geocaching World (RVNN.tv). This was the last show we are going to do for 2011. Yep,  we are taking the next two weeks off to celebrate the holidays and also gear up for CES2012 which happens in January. For the weeks of December 22nd and December 29th we are going to have Geocaching World marathons. Fear not though, be sure to join up in the chat-room anyway because we may be stopping by to say hi and make fun comments as we watch with you.

Lessee, some of the really great notables was once again we utilized a Google Hangout and had a slew of people joining us there as well as another record crowd in the chat-room. Saw a lot of new names and faces with the added bonus of viewers from at least five different countries in attendance. It is so cool because for many of them it was extremely late at night but we were told they wouldn't miss a live recording. Thanks so much to everyone who stops on by during the show. We interact so much the gang that you are truly an intricate part of the show!

I am not sure but judging by the comments in the chat-room and in the hangout I inadvertently made several viewers wet themselves by my opening segway. You see the show's theme was "Cleaning Out The Video Closet" and the second I heard that my mind instantly thought, "Oh this is going to be fun". So you know me, I did what I had to do to get a laugh. Picture this, the TechPodcast Network logo fades and I fade into view. Then I say ever so matter of factly, "Tonight on Geocaching World, HeadHardHat comes out of the closet"...pause...taps headphone in left ear..."Oh, right, HeadHardHat cleans out video closet - NEXT on Geocaching World".

I really wasn't sure what the reaction was going to be but in my headphones I heard Co-Host Courtney Wallin and Managing Director Andy McCaskey busting up in the background. Then I looked at the comments in the chat-room and saw that it and the hangout exploded as well. It was one of those moments that I will remember for quite some time.

The entire show itself went really well shy of one time Skype acted up and Andy had to call me back to get a better connection. We discussed First To Finds, Multi-geocaches and how to make one of my cool fire hydrant PVC geocaches. All with a nice little video and discussion which included the chat-room and hangout. In fact, when you watch the actual show you will see that in one monitor behind Courtney is myself on Skype and in the other is people from the hangout. Really cool. Special kudos to one of our regular viewers Darren Matthers from Scotland who also had some cool reindeer graphics going on during the hangout. Thanks Darren!

Well again, fantastic show, lots of people in the chat-room and hangout, awesome discussions with everybody. The prizes that were given away form our Cache Stash consisted of a really great geocoin from the Cache-A-Maniacs Podcast and an amazing GeoAchievement geocoin and pin set from CoinsAndPins.com.

We always have a great time when doing Geocaching World and it just keeps getting better! You will be able to see the show in it's entirety in a few days. Be sure to check out RVNN.tv, iTunes, TechPodcast Network and all our other distributors to see when it actually gets released.

So that's it for 2011. We will be back in January 2012 and if we haven't said it before we are saying it now. It is you our fans and viewers that keeps us going each and every week. We could not do this show the way we do without you. THANK YOU!

To All, Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays - Happy New Year and see you next year!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - EP #232 - Christmas Gift Episode

Heavy sigh,
I really cannot talk enough about our hosting site TalkShoe which we use while recording our weekly Geocaching Podcast show. I remember way back when I was just an avid listener and all the buffering issues, lock ups and other asunder headaches it caused when used.  Then when actually being a member of the show itself there were constant issue with connectivity, sounding like a Cylon and just plain getting it so one can speak, be heard and then actually hear the show itself. In a word - nightmare. It seems like just about every week TalkShoe does an update and then something goes flaky (IT term). I don't change the hardware configuration on that box so this is all TalkShoe. Anyways, last night was no exception.

Just before the show I start logging in. I noticed that TalkShoe was doing another update so I grit my teeth and hoped for the best. In the words from Sheldon (The Big Bang Show) - BA-ZINGA! I heard two words from the show, there was a slight pop and then nothing. Couldn't hear anything from the hosts who also seemed to be working their issues out at the time. Nor could anyone hear me. So I exit TalkShoe - another update happens - same thing. I go out and in again - same. Finally I reboot my entire system, yet another update and low and behold with about 30 seconds before the show was to start I finally get in. Phew! I was getting really frustrated because I knew that Co-Hosts Darrylw4 and XpunkX would be divvying up my parts and I really wanted to be a part of the holiday gift list show. So just saying that this particular set of issues was a new one for TalkShoe the frustrations with them continue from week to week and so if you ever wonder why we may sound a bit frazzled at the beginning of the show that is most likely why.

Okay on with the show... so to speak. The banter was light tonight because we had so much to talk about. We know that many geocachers and significant others are anxious to hear our holiday gift list for those last minute holiday gift ideas they may need. We are always all too happy to pass on what we find. In tonight's show we went well over 20 different items from the tangible like new GPSr units to the intangible like being given Time to do some guilt free geocaching.

There was a lot of information discussed all laced with personal experience from each of us. Pretty great insights if I say so myself. At any rate you will just have to listen to the entire show which will be out at any second and make your own observations. There are also links to all the items we discussed in the show notes when published. Please feel free to check them out.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

See you next week!

Our "Obsessed" Blog Is Looking Good on Google Currents

Our Award Winning Geocaching "Obsessed" Blog via Google Currents on iPad2

I was really pleased with the Google Currents app on the iPad2 from the moment I set my eyes on it.  It has a really nice interface and smooth feel too it. For those who may not know Google Currents is an information aggregation application with connections to many top notch media portals. It also allows RSS feed via Google Reader. So just for kicks I loaded my Geocache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? blog and was very impressed how quickly it synced and how nice it looks.

What really impressed me was how great it is being a Google application on the iPad2. I have been waiting for the iPad2 optimized Google+ app and quite frankly... still waiting. If Currents is an indication of things to come then the updated Google+ can come non too soon.

If you would like to include our award winning geocaching blog with your favorite RSS feeds you can get it right here:

MUNZEE Lamination Wear and Tear Test Results

After five months outside this Munzee Card is still holding up well.
For those of you who are into the Munzee craze you might be curious as to what methods of card placements are holding up and which ones are not. After I first heard of Munzee back in August 2011 I did a series of dunk tests. You can see that post here:
http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2011/07/munzee-card-dunk-test-no-punch-holes.html

These are the same tests I use when checking out new geocache ideas to see how waterproof they actually are.

What I have personally tested in regards to Munzee are different methods of lamination. The results were notable. There are two types of lamination that I experimented with. The first was the cold, press down business card lamination. The second was using a hot press lamination machine with the business card size jacket. Both looked almost identical when put together correctly. It looked like the paper Munzee cards suspended inside would keep all safe and dry.

For the most part that is true, however there was a serious flaw with both methods so I felt it best to mention it here. The critical flaw is if you punch a whole in the lamination AND the hole cuts through the paper card inside. Once this happens you no longer have a good seal and your card will leak!

Lamination bonds plastic to plastic. It does not bond onto the item placed inside the lamination jacket. So you must ONLY punch your hole in an area where the lamination is clear through and nothing is between the two sheets. You may have to print your Munzee card a little smaller to accomplish this.

For the endurance portion of the test I placed some of my Munzee cards out in the wild for four or five months. I just recently checked up on a couple.

The results: The Munzee where I did the cold, press down lamination remained waterproof, BUT, the edges did look a bit frayed and are starting to separate just enough to make me think that in another year or two they may need to be replaced. The Munzee that I hot pressed with a machine looked the same as the day I put it out. Not a defect anywhere. In fact the plastic tie I placed it with was badly faded and the Munzee card was not. Thought that was interesting. So there you go.

You be the judge in the matter of how you place your Munzee cards. For now the hot press machine appears to be just a bit better.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Ep 914 - Geocaching Holiday List 2011

Okay right off the bat I have to apologize to our loyal readers in regards to not getting the Behind The Scenes information for Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) out until now. Our last show was all about the Geocaching Holiday List for 2011. It is chock full of all sorts of gift giving information and I have been so busy with so many things I was not able to get the actual list out until yesterday. Here is the link for it by the way:
http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2011/12/geocaching-holiday-list-2011-poll-2011.html

So since the actual episode is still not out for your viewing pleasure, let me see if I can at least remember some of the highlights. Lessee, Courtney Wallin was learning a lot from this show when it comes to all the cool gadgets and tools geocachers use when out enjoying our game, sport and or obsession. Our Holiday Gift List came from feedback of actual geocachers and then sorted from most popular items to the least. We had a lot of surprises this year compared to lists past. It is best that you just click on the link above and give it a gander. The main idea is to help family and friends find gift ideas for geocachers and I get thanked each and every year for doing this, so, your welcome.

We had so many things to talk about the show ran a bit long at around the 56 minute mark. It's all good information and to me the time just flew by. The prizes given away from our Geocaching World Cache Stash during this episode were very cool. For example we gave away a bunch of those really cool night geocache tacks from GxPrpoxy.com and something new, a set of geocaching pocket books from Geobloggen.com. I will be doing a review of them in the very near future.

Of course the Grand Prize went to NativTxn (Denise Vajdak) who won the beautiful Sample Compass Rose Geocoin from CoinAndPins.com. Here is the link telling about it:
http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2011/11/register-to-win-one-of-kind-sample.html
That was a really fun contest and we want to thank CoinsAndPins.com for their very generous donation to our Cache Stash.

Well that is about it for this behind the scenes account. Thanks again for stopping by and checking it out. The actual episode should be out for distribution just about any time now so keep a look out. You will be glad you did.

All of our released Geocaching World episodes are available in iTunes and on the RVNN.tv website but if you did not make it to the live recording you can see it when it is released soonly.

Geocaching World is recorded LIVE each and every week on Thursday at 6:30pm EST. We meet up in the chat room here: www.ustream.tv/channel/rvnn-live.

If you are a company who would like to participate with our Geocaching World Cache Stash Sponsorship Program and donate prizes for our show please email geocache@rvnn.tv for more details.

See you next week.

Geocaching Holiday Gift List 2011

Geocaching Holiday List 2011 / Poll 2011

Well it is that time of year again. Time for when I get asked all sorts of questions from geocaching spouses and other family members what is the most requested items this year. I have been doing this poll for four years now and it is interesting how quickly the technologies have been changing. For example, you can see how smart phones have replaced PDAs. They also have effected the areas of photography and handheld GPSrs. Even though smart phones have made a huge impact in the geocaching world. They were NOT in big demand this year when it came to geocachers and this year's holiday list. In fact they were at the bottom of the list. I am thinking because of pure saturation but that is just my humble opinion. Nope this year we are going back to the basics for geocacher holiday gifts. Sure a lot of requests came in for handheld GPSrs but many cachers want basic Geocaching Stuff including tools and helpful items when out in the wild. Check out this year's list right off the press and hopefully it will give you some helpful gift ideas. Enjoy.

-HHH

The way this years holiday list was compiled was a combination of entries from geocachers on both my "Obsessed" blog and from geocachers on the Geocaching.com forums. The list below was broken up into main groups from most popular to least. You may notice little "x" marks by many of the items. That signifies higher groupings of votes for that item.

Handheld GPSr

GPSr - Basic, Paperless - xxxxxx
This year's most popular request came from a lot of new geocachers who may have a smartphone already or is just starting out with geocaching and would like a good basic unit this year. There was no specific GPSr brand defined so we clumped these all into one.

GPSr - Garmin Etrex 20 - xxx
A very popular choice this year which may make the Garmin Etrex 20 the new replacement for the Garming 60Csx.

GPSr - Oregon 550t - xx
Little more on the higher price end but still under many of the geocachers gift wish lists.

GPSr - GPSMAP 62
A bit on the more expensive side yet the GPSMAP62 is a holiday favorite.

GPSr - Magellan Explorist
If you are starting out with geocaching and want a good reliable GPSr the Explorist may be the GPSr for you or the geocacher in your life.

GPSr - Montana
For the geocacher who wants all the bells and whistles found in the modern GPSr unit and has no problem handling the price tag. The Montana is the most chosen king of the hand helds.

Other Geocaching Stuff

Ammo Boxes - xxxxxxx
Everybody loves ammo boxes and these were the most highly sought after gifts when it comes to geocachers. You can get some really great deals out there if you look for them in bulk. For example - EBay.

Lock and Locks Containers -xxxxx
Ahh, the plastic equivalent to Ammo Boxes. Lock&Lock boxes are still highly sought after by geocachers. Did you know you can actually use them for storing stuff in them as well? Who'da Thunk?

Time - Time away to Geocache - xxxxx
Believe it or not for the past three years Time was THE number one requested item that geocachers wanted. Even though it has slipped down the poles a tad. Many a geocacher would love to have a guilt free slice of time to go out and geocache to their hearts content.

More Quality geocache hides - xxxx
Another non-tangible item has come up onto our list. Many geocachers have expressed quality over quantity when it comes to geocaching hides. So why not bring some holiday goodness to others by putting out a well thought out geocache instead of a plain ole park and grab? I am sure many would greatly appreciate it.

Trackable Tags - xxx
It would appear the simpler things in a geocachers life is what is wanted this year. At about $5.00US a tag. Giving a pack of travel bug tags is a great stocking stuffer.

Geocoins - xxxxx
We had a bunch of requests for geocoins this year. Many had specific ones in mind while others would love any geocoins they could get. Geocoins also make a huge impression to geocachers and are a great gift idea.

Walking Stick - xxx
Walking sticks are both extremely useful while geocaching and can make quite the statement. There are many places you can get walking sticks but if I may make a suggestion try Brazos Walking Sticks via the internet. They have a very impressive collection.

Geomobile - $2.5 million - xx
We had several geocachers requesting a Geomobile of some type or another. I found the one that was tricked out to the tune of about 2.5 million dollars. Yeah we can dream can't we?

Multi Storage for swag
Another inexpensive idea that goes a long way. Storage containers for geocachinig stuff is always a hit.

Over the back of auto seat organizer
For geocachers on the go this was a really great idea. A storage organizer that hangs on the back of car seats. A perfect place to hold all your park and grab items for quick and easy access.

Rechargable batteries
This just goes without saying in today's techno gadget world.

Gas Card
Another new item this year but what a winner. Giving your significant other a pre-paid gas card so they can go geocaching is a wonderful gift idea.

Annual Park Pass
Great idea for any geocacher. An annual park pass is one of those items you may never think of getting but the receiver would be oh so happy to receive.

Extended Geocaching Weather
It would be oh so great to have just a few more weeks of geocaching weather. Especially if the extreme hot/cold times of year are approaching. It never hurts to wish.

Clues to puzzle geocaches
Another "This would be so cool if..." Holiday wish.

Geocaching.com Premium Membership
Give the gift that keeps geocachers rich in pocket queries.

Waterproof Log Sheets
An inexpensive but great geocacher stocking stuffer.

Geocaching Mentor
This was another new addition to the Holiday Wish List. There are ton's of new geocachers out there that would love nothing more than to spend an afternoon with an experienced geocacher to take them out and show them the ropes. How about making a holiday card stating just that and give it as a gift. Costs nothing but what an impact you could make to someone else.

Geocaching Tools (Multi-tool, headlamp,etc.)
It was sort of suprising to me how this year some of the more popular requests for holiday gift requests were geocaching tools of the trade. Check out the list below for some great inexpensive holiday ideas.

Tools - Extendable Rod with magnetic tip -xx
Tools - Compass
Tools - Extendable Illuminating Mirror
Tools - Hand Sanitizer
Tools - Latex Gloves
Tools - Petzl Ultra Belt Headlamp 350 Lumens

Outdoors Clothing
When the weather starts getting colder out, geocachers need to stay protected during their adventures. Outdoors Clothing is a great help.

Clothes - Geocaching earings - xxxx
Clothes - Gloves
Clothes - Hiking Boots
Clothes - Ponchos
Clothes - Snow Shoes
Clothes - Focus T-Shirt

Smartphone for Geocaching
Never thought I would see smartphones at the bottom of the gift list but on the other hand so many geocachers already have them why not ask for something else? Interesting.

Smartphone - Blackberry Cell Phone with geocaching app
Smartphone - Galaxy Nexus

Camera Equipment
Another victim to the smart phone phenomenom. They say that the best camera you can have is the one that is with you at the time needed. Smart phone cameras are high pixel in quality and are right there in your pocket. This is causing the dedicated camera equipment to be needed less. It really dictated that this in this year's poll.

Auto GPSr
In my humble opinion Auto GPSr units are also directly effected by the smart phone usage. So many smart phones have navigation apps available for free or a minimal price. Why spend so much for expensive annual maps if they are no longer needed? I think unless you use an Auto GPSr for specific reasons. They are going the way of the PDA.

Geocaching App for Smartphone
Geocaching Apps were the lowest requested item of this year's Holiday List. Mainly because everybody downloads apps on a regular basis. They are not in demand during the holidays for that very reason. They are so inexpensive and easy to install that people no longer associate them the same way as say getting a long awaited video game for a computer.
