There are many celebrations of the Holiday Season,
we hope yours is full of good will and cheer!

We had another great show this year for our annual Geocaching World (RVNN.tv)  Geocaching Holiday Gift List and as with each year, I have been doing them since 2008, we get some surprises. Lets see if your geocaching wish list item is here. By the way you may want to print this out, put in some arrows and circles then leave to be seen by your spouse or significant other. Just saying .

Right on my Geocache:I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? blog we ran a poll with twelve of the most popular geocaching holiday gift ideas from past years. The rankings for all these items change from year to year but this is how they turned out for 2012. (Note - you were able to choose more than one item this year so that is why the percentages do not add up to the expected 100%)

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - EP #232 - Christmas Gift Episode

Heavy sigh,
I really cannot talk enough about our hosting site TalkShoe which we use while recording our weekly Geocaching Podcast show. I remember way back when I was just an avid listener and all the buffering issues, lock ups and other asunder headaches it caused when used.  Then when actually being a member of the show itself there were constant issue with connectivity, sounding like a Cylon and just plain getting it so one can speak, be heard and then actually hear the show itself. In a word - nightmare. It seems like just about every week TalkShoe does an update and then something goes flaky (IT term). I don't change the hardware configuration on that box so this is all TalkShoe. Anyways, last night was no exception.

Just before the show I start logging in. I noticed that TalkShoe was doing another update so I grit my teeth and hoped for the best. In the words from Sheldon (The Big Bang Show) - BA-ZINGA! I heard two words from the show, there was a slight pop and then nothing. Couldn't hear anything from the hosts who also seemed to be working their issues out at the time. Nor could anyone hear me. So I exit TalkShoe - another update happens - same thing. I go out and in again - same. Finally I reboot my entire system, yet another update and low and behold with about 30 seconds before the show was to start I finally get in. Phew! I was getting really frustrated because I knew that Co-Hosts Darrylw4 and XpunkX would be divvying up my parts and I really wanted to be a part of the holiday gift list show. So just saying that this particular set of issues was a new one for TalkShoe the frustrations with them continue from week to week and so if you ever wonder why we may sound a bit frazzled at the beginning of the show that is most likely why.

Okay on with the show... so to speak. The banter was light tonight because we had so much to talk about. We know that many geocachers and significant others are anxious to hear our holiday gift list for those last minute holiday gift ideas they may need. We are always all too happy to pass on what we find. In tonight's show we went well over 20 different items from the tangible like new GPSr units to the intangible like being given Time to do some guilt free geocaching.

There was a lot of information discussed all laced with personal experience from each of us. Pretty great insights if I say so myself. At any rate you will just have to listen to the entire show which will be out at any second and make your own observations. HeadHardHat's Geocaching GPS Holiday List 2010

Okay the turkey has been gobbled up and there is only a few more swigs of Pepto left in the bottle. The holiday season is upon us and people are scrambling to find what is the most wanted GPS units out there. Below is my conclusions to the Geocaching GPS Holiday List for 2010.

It is my personal opinion which I have based on several years of asking directly from active geocachers and watching the trends of handheld units plus the incorporation of smart phone applications that the GPS market has become saturated. Much like the personal computer, at one point only the gamer and a few smaller niche of people owned them and thusly controlled it's overall popularity in the world. Then suddenly computers reached that point where everyone wanted them and thus saturated the market to the point they are giving them away. I feel GPS units have reached that point as well. Everyone has at least one and in many cases multiples. It was not too long ago that the only people who had a GPS was geocachers, hikers and survey people. Then the automobile GPS units started to come out and now they come standard in many cars. Handheld units are in demand but now almost all phones coming out now have GPS capability. You don't even have to have a handheld it's right on your phone. So mostly everybody in one way or another has them. A few years ago everybody wanted the latest and greatest GPS gizmo. The past couple of years, not so much.

So when I asked this year what GPS you would want under your tree the responses where half the numbers I was used to. Most wanted some top notch toys while many others were happier with the mid-ranged models. Very interesting indeed.

Below were the models from most popularly requested to the least. I linked up the top three for easy access to you.

Geocacher Holiday Wishlist 2009

Well it's that time of year again where all the good little geocachers wait patiently for their latest geocaching goodies to appear on holiday's morn. So this year we asked the geocachers who frequent Geocaching.com's forums what they wanted. I must say the results were surprising and we will show you not only this year's top ten but how it compared to last year. Let's begin.

#10 - Netbook computers. Paperless geocaching is the most popular subject on this blog and netbooks are finally coming into their own. Not only can you have instant access to the Internet your geocaching notes are easily stored. This is the first year netbooks made the top ten.

#9 - Friends to go geocaching with. Not everything on our Holiday Wishlist comes from the store. This year many geocachers asked for friends to come along with them while geocaching.

#8 - Premium Memberships to Geocaching.com. This is another new request this year. What more could a geocacher who is just starting out want than access to Pocket Queries and other services provided with a premium membership.

#7 - A Job. It is sad and unfortunately a sign of the times where a request for a job makes the top ten. I can say from personal experience that this also is a wish I would like to see come true by the end of the year.

#6 (#10 - 2009) - PDA. The need to do paperless geocaching is on the rise and PDAs moved up the list this year. Using applications like Cachemate can really enhance the geocaching experience with the help of a Personal Digital Assistant. Think of all the trees you will save right off the bat.

#5 - Smart Phones. The top two smart phones are IPhones and BlackBerrys. Both have access to multitudes of applications that can be used for on the spot geocaching. Throw in Internet access, real time geocaching information and oh yeah they are really good for making a phone call too makes this wish list item a real keeper.

#4 (#4 - 2009) - GPS Units. Now you would think the number one item that a geocacher would want would be the latest and greatest GPS unit. Once again GPS units remain at the #4 spot with the following points of special interest.

Garmin Oregon's were the most popular pick this year.

Delorme PN-20 and PN-40 came in second

#3 (#7 - 2009) - Cameras. Photography is a huge part of the geocaching experience. We love to show where we have been, what we have found and of course shots of the Travel Bugs we have discovered in our adventures. So it is no real surprise that cameras moved up the list this year. The most popular camera this year has been the Nikon D90. The biggest concern when it comes to the camera of choice is that it is a bit more durable and can take being outside with the possibility of moisture while geocaching.

#2 (#8 - 2009) - Geocache Mobiles. Moving way up in the top ten is the request for better wheels while geocaching. Of course is the request for unlimited gas but it just goes to show that when geocachers wish for something they wish big.

#1 (#1 - 2009) - Time to go Geocaching. For a second year in a row the top spot goes to Time. Funny how these surveys and polls turn out some times. It wasn't the flashiest gizmo or the most expensive thing-a-ma-bob that almost all geocachers asked for. Nope it was to have more time doing geocaching. We live in this always connected, hyper fast, must do more with less society and what we all crave is that blissful few moments of quiet. Sitting next to an ammo box or Lock and Lock box for a quick moment of bliss. Signing a log and rummaging through trade items, travel bugs and the rare geocoin. Noticing the wind as it gently raises the leaves or parts the clouds to expose that valley below. No it's not all the cool toys we love to play with, but the extra time to go out and do what we enjoy the most.
