Tonight on the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast : Where To Look For A Geocache

Tonight on the GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast Debaere and I discuss one of the most common questions of a new geocacher - Where To Look For A Geocache?

We go over many of the more common places to hunt and the types of containers you may find. Tonight at 8:30pm EST everyone meets up for the LIVE YouTube feed and chat room via www.geosnippits.com. We also give away our prize from last week's GeoSnippits Geocaching Cache Stash and have a new question for this week. Plus we find out what Dave's bottom third quote of the week is going to be.

That and so much more.

 See you tonight.

Pulling My Garmin 60Csx Out Of Moth Balls

My girlfriend Amy told me recently that she was interested in trying Geocaching. I am thinking, sweet, she wants to get outdoors more and having someone get into the same interest as me is an awesome way of spending time together. So it occurred to me that she is going to need a decent handheld GPSr unit besides her phone. She agreed with me that dropping her new smartphone into water or crashing it on a rock may not be the best thing to have happen. Today I pulled out my faithful friend the Garmin 60Csx and took it for a test spin. I was very happy to see it start up right out of the gate. It took a while to acquire the satelites but after a quick calibration fixed all that. The next thing I knew I was on a nearby greenway and it was taking me right to them. So now Amy can feel confident that she will be able to get those Geocaches like a pro. Note - I am really hoping she gets hooked and that friendly competition of finding Geocaches kicks in. To me that is so much more fun when you yell out "Found It".  You know I will be hearing it way more than saying it, still awesome!

There Be Dragons Here: Resin Hardening

So far so good but i am concerned that the resin will not stick well enough to the plastic ammo box.  May have to spray the whole thing down with enamel paint. Some plastic paint for a finishing touch should be nice.

More to come...

The Geocacher's Creed

Every year and no matter on what show I go out of my way to make sure that the Geocacher's Creed is discussed.  I can't help it really, there is just way too much information held in those words and examples to be ignored. Sure it is a voluntary premise that geocachers do not have to follow. No one is holding a weapon on them making sure a order of standards are obeyed. On the other hand in a world of fast park and grabs plus everything is about the numbers. It really couldn't hurt to shout out loud some common sense every once in a while.

During the recording of The GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast: Episode 010 - Geocacher's Creed we all found out that when the website for the Geocacher's Creed went down that our good friends Cache-Advance.com took it upon themselves to take over and keep the site alive. We would personally want to thank Lisa and Cache Advance for keeping the Geocacher's Creed going!

So take a couple of minutes and think about what the individual parts of the Geocacher's Creed can mean to you. If you want to learn a whole bunch more about it be sure to listen to our GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast or watch our show on you tube. Just search for GeoSnippits or Headhardhat.

Enjoy!

The Geocacher's Creed
http://www.geocreed.info/

When placing or seeking geocaches, I will:

Not endanger myself or others.

Observe all laws & rules of the area.

Respect property rights and seek permission where appropriate.

Avoid causing disruptions or public alarm.

Minimize my and others' impact on the environment.

Be considerate of others.

Protect the integrity of the game pieces.

There Be Dragon's Here: Geocache Series - Phase Two

Hey all,

Working on the next phase to my "There Be Dragon's Here" geocache series. I really do not know how well this is going to work but that is part of the fun of creating cool caches. Sometimes it is glorious and others, not so much. This is going to be an expensive series so it better turn out right - I say to myself.

Anyways, the dragons were glued to the ammobox with Fusion glue then the hole where the handle resides gets taped with Gorilla duct tape so we can make a holding area. Then we filled it half way up with resin and fish gravel. Finally we poured the resin on top of the fish gravel to hopefully solidify everything including the dragon permanently in place. They will be spending the better part of the week in the shed to completely dry and keep the fumes out of the house.

Well we will just have to wait now and see what happens.

More to come.

There Be Dragons Here - Geocaching Series

The ammo boxes have arrived for geocache series I want to make based on dragons. Here is a shot with them on their respective homes. I like the way this turned out because I will be able to attach them to the handle and not have to drill into the top of the ammo can.

Going to get resin and fish gravel for next phase.

More to come.

Some After Work Geocaching And A Scout Master

Went to pick up my girlfriend from work and picked up some geocaches before hand.

Yes i told her first...

Had two nice finds and a DNF letterbox.

On the way back to the car from my second find I just happened to  meet up with scout master Paul. He heard me talking about geocaching to my recorder which then stroke up the conversation. We talked about the geocaching merit badge that is available to scouts and also his pet peeve with scouts who do not learn how to use a manual compass. This too is one of my wishes for geocachers to too learn how to use a manual compass correctly for those circumstances where their smartphone or GPS fails them and they know how to get back to their car. We talked for quite a bit and Paul had explained to me that their is actually a training course in a nearby park that is used for manual navigation. I was intrigued and so hopefully in the not too distant future will have Paul on the show to talk about manual navigation. Can't wait.

Now I need to get Amy before I have to geocache in the dog house.

See you out on the trails...

Packing Them In B Umstead State Park, NC

You know that everyone gets the spring fever the first sign of a 65 to 70 degree day rolls around. I was amazed as we pulled into the B Umstead State Park and there was not a single spot available. People were starting to park along the side of the road which is what we did. Within minutes there was not a single place to park anywhere and people were parking outside the park - Crazy.

I love long shadows when doing photography.
Plenty of sites and sounds once we hit the Loblolly Trail which goes for 2.7 miles and is considered a moderate difficulty terrain. There was some good stream crossings due the the bridge being out and it was actually more green the deeper into the hollers you went.
Andy HeadHardHat doing some rock jumping over a stream.

The lower into some hollers the cooler it became but also more green.
Had a great time hiking today with girlfriend Amy. There were only a couple of geocaches that I have not already found in the park and they were on the other side. So today's adventure was getting good shots with the camera and enjoying the company.
Saw this little guy warming his wings in the sun.

Amy showing her little known tree bending skills.

All in all a great hike with a lovely lady. I planning on doing much more now that the spring time weather is coming back.

A Little Birdie Told Me

Okay I had to get just one more geocache before I go get my car worked on and this one was so cute. It is so nice to have the weather finally turning more towards spring. Looking forward to finding some more geocaches really soon like let's say  tomorrow.

This Is HeadHardHat Checking In

I couldn't help it. The Geocaching bug was stronger than the head cold I have been fighting and I had to go for some Geocaches today. The sun was out the sky is dark blue and I have my Ful powerbag all charged up for a day like today. So as I finished up a DNF ( Did Not Find ) on my last attempt. Oh did I mention how I hate holly bush hides especially when the GPS is pointing to an old and rarely existing working phone booth AND there are several ten foot holly bushes that could be where the geocache is..  Running sentence apology. Needless to say the fun factor ran out quickly and so I stopped to update my blog, get something to eat and recharge my phone on my powerbag. If you are wondering the juice from the car is not enough to recharge the phone because it shuts off after 10 minutes with the car off. So it is much more productive to plug the phone into my Ful bag and let it recharge there. If you want to learn more about my Ful bags let me know and I will do another review.

Anywho, already picked up a handful of Geocaches and I should be able to pick up a few more before my cache mobile oil change later today. I was kind of hoping to get a 3/3 in a nearby park but unfortunately the park was closed due to construction which normally is not a big deal except they went out of their way posting no trespassing signs while the park is closed so we will just look elsewhere.

Wil fill you in on more as I get going but thought it cool to do a quick check in. Hope your day is filled with Geocaching wonder as well.
