GeoSnippits-GeoBasics-Finding a Geocache in the Woods

Well this should be the last GeoSnippits of 2010. I am going to be taking some time off to enjoy the holidays.

GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Geocaching Travel Bug

Pete The Parrot is a real party animal travel bug.

It never fails, not that it is a bad thing mind you. I have a tentative list of all the GeoSnippits videos that I want to do in the near future. Hundreds of them actually but I usually keep a list of about thirty near me at all times. I was just about to start the next on the list and suddenly I get a bunch of requests from our viewers that pertain to a subject I had no intention of doing right now but how can I let down my peeps? So that is why out of the blue I created this latest GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Geocaching Travel Bug. I literally received five requests from different viewers in the same week. So why not?

This is actually a really informative and fun video to watch. Filmed almost entirely in green screen we show you how to make your own travel bug, register it on geocaching.com, package it so it is ready to go into the wild and finally actually show you it's placement into a nearby travel bug hotel.

By the way I don't actually note in the video that you can purchase travel bug id tags just about anywhere online. There are tons of online stores that sell them and they cost about $5.00US.

GeoSnippits - How To Deal With Geocaching Muggles

One of the hot viewer topics this year is how to deal with muggles. It literally is the most requested video asked to be made. So keeping with our GeoSnippits tradition of using our viewer suggestions we went out this last week and created our latest geocaching tutorial. How To Deal With Geocaching Muggles is a tutorial video designed in an almost classroom like setting to show our viewers how geocachers are being seen by muggles and how to look less suspicious when we go out geocaching.

It is broken down into several sections of discussion:

• Types of muggles
• What makes geocachers look suspicious
• How to Fit In a muggle prown area while geocaching
• What to do when approached by a muggle

and an over summary.

GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Evil Nano Geocache

One of the really cool features about geocaching is the ability for geocachers to invent geocaches. The possibilities are almost endless and limited only to our imagination. One thing for sure is if someone creates a geocache and the design is solid others will modify it to their liking. That is the way it should be and keeps the game, sport, obsession fresh and fun.

This particular geocache is one of those adaptations. It originated from my How To Make An Evil Ant Hill Geocache video of which I made last year. Recently I received an email from Seth Jones who sent in some photos where he made a geocache based off the Ant Hill geocache and instead of using bondo he used a plastic resin. Check out the post I made about it here.

I was immediately intrigued and had to make some geocache versions for myself. This video shows how I made them and the end results. I completely expect our viewers to come up with their adaptations as well.

GeoSnippits: Making Your Own Emergency Geocaching Repair Kit - EGRK

It happens in geocaching, when you walk up to a geocache and find it in need of repair. If you are like me you hate to see swag, log books, travel bugs and geocoins getting damaged because the geocache they reside in is allowing the elements to get in. GeoSnippits An Introduction To Paperless Geocaching

There is one phrase that is on the lips of almost everybody in the geocaching world. It is far and above the most popular search item on my blog and websites and it is Paperless Geocaching.

Many geocachers want to go green either with the intent to help save the planet, make their geocaching experience easier and with that new ease more enjoyable. Many times it is a combination of all of the above.

To help provide information to our viewers we put together our latest GeoSnippits Video entitled "An Introduction To Paperless Geocaching".

This introductory of paperless geocaching goodness gives several prime examples of why you would want to go paperless and some suggestions of which devices may be for you. Note that we do not discuss GPSr units that have paperless functionality. That will be done in a future GeoSnippits. What you do get though is some really good information for geocachers who are trying to decide what works best for them and to bring up interesting discussion. Finally Some Wintertime Geocaching - GeoSnippits Video

Since late last year when the first snow flakes appeared in North America I have been asked by our viewers when GeoSnippits would be coming out with a wintertime geocaching video. Now for Michigan Magazine TV I have been filming in different locations during the winter but there just wasn't any snow. The one time I really wanted to do some caching while it snowed was on a trip coming back from Ohio and I happened to find myself in the Virginian Mountains during a blizzard. Sorry folks but all I wanted to do at that point was get home in one piece. --> My Life Flashed Before My Eyes A Couple Dozen Times.

Time passed and I even planned on taking a road trip up into the West Virginia mountains to do some winter geocaching but was just not able to pull it off. Then it happened, a rare snow storm swept over North Carolina and I had my chance. Now you have to understand that down here we normally get ice storms more than snow and this one was actually a combination of both. We only received about five inches of the white stuff but the ice covered roads shut everything down for three days. When I filmed this GeoSnippits I was only able to get about two miles from my house because they had shut down our main highway.

Anyways i hope you enjoy this GeoSnippits, we had a ball making it. I want to thank Miss Geoness for living through our white knuckle driving session. We witnessed three cars going into the ditch as we went from one geocache to the next. Remember they do not have snow plows in this part of North Carolina...

GeoSnippits: What's In Your Geocaching Pack Video

Geocaching is an amazing, fun filled way to spend time outdoors with friends and family.

HeadHardHat's Evil Ant Hill Geocache

First and foremost I have to give credit to one of our GeoSnippits viewers TheWhiteCroe, who took me down this EVIL path by giving me the suggestion to see if a fake rock could be made out of bondo. I will be sending him an Official GeoSnippits pathtag for the suggestion.

It all came out of trying to prototype the geocache in the first place. I started out very similar to how it is described in the video. I simply made some bondo and poured it out on top of the 35mm container. I observed how quickly the bondo started to harden so I started piling it up on top of itself. Before I knew it I had that same shape you see out of the Close Encounters movie. It certainly didn't look like a rock. In fact it looked more like a dog turd but I wanted to see how the textured spray paint was going to look so I painted it anyways. After it dried I looked at it again and the light stone paint looked a lot more like sand than anything. Then it popped in my brain, "well that looks a whole lot like an ant hill..."

So after trying a couple of different stone colors I was really pleased with the results. The rest is now history and my EVIL Ant Hill made from bondo is out in the world. The video wasn't out more than a couple of minutes before the comments started pouring in. One suggestion was to use a nano instead of a 35mm container to make it even smaller. I just love how the main template of an idea comes out and people use their own ideas to make it better. All I can say is go for it.

I had a blast making this video and inventing the Ant Hill Geocache, now back to making that geocache look like a rock. Where did I put that bondo?

GeoSnippits - Taking The Family Geocaching

Recently when I visited the Great Lake State of Michigan I had an opportunity to take my brothers Scott and David plus my nephews Zachary, Aaron and Noah geocaching. It was really a thrill because I do not get that many chances to have everybody together at one time let alone doing something as cool as geocaching.

We went to the Holly Recreation Area and ventured down one of the State Park's many nature trails. The trail itself was almost ten miles long and had around 60 caches sprinkled all away around. We ended doing about 4.5 miles of the trail and had an absolute blast with each and every find.

GeoSnippits Electronic Bread Crumbs and GPS Tracking

I love making GeoSnippits videos and this one highlights all the reasons I enjoy them so much.

First of all I get to walk around in all sorts of nature. Granted in my neck of the woods it is just that forests and woodlands. Swamps, fields and hills are my norm yet the Oceans and Mountains call to me as well. I consider myself very blessed.

Then top it off by taking hikes with my daughter Miss Geoness who is also our lead photographer and film crew. She loves geocaching as much as I do and even though that usually entails carrying the bulk of the equipment I usually do not get much of a gripe, again blessed.

This adventure we went into the back trails of a nearby park at Benson Lake in Garner, North Carolina. The idea was simple, one of out GeoSnippits viewers had sent in a suggestion to discuss tracking on a couple of GPS units. I decided to use a Garmin 60CSx and a Delorme PN-40. I always used Tracback and other electronic bread crumbs so no problemo. So we packed everything up and headed off into the woods. Though I should note that GeoPuppy Emily was quite upset because she stomps those trails on a weekly basis. Sorry puppy thems the breaks.

Filming went quite smoothly and then a very fortunate bit of luck happened. A biker happened to hear and spot a pair of large barn owls calling to each other. He saw us and showed where they were. I still have not looked up the specifics of this particular owl but I do know they were BIG and only a few feet off of the trails. Just beautiful to watch.

So oh yeah, lets talk video. It goes into detail about how GPS units have what is known as tracking or electronic bread crumbs that do what they sound like. Allow you to walk all over the place and when it is time to go back. Just follow the route on the GPS screen back to where you started. Believe you me it will save you a lot of headache the next time you decide to venture too far fro the parking lot. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.

GeoSnippits Video - Planning A Geocaching Route - Road Trip To The Ocean

Oh man, there is nothing like a road trip and this one was extra special for me cuz we were going to the ocean. What a great opportunity to do a GeoSnippits episode about Planning a Geocaching Route. That is where you map out a plan of the roads you are going to travel on from your starting point to your destination and if there are any geocaches nearby you can pick them up. Great idea!

We planned a road trip from Raleigh, NC down to the east coast and Kure Beach, NC. This is about a two hour trip. Along the way we did some cool geocaching and ran into some rather interesting things along the way. You will have to check out the video to see what I mean.

If you are interested in a great geocaching phone app you can also see GeocacheNavigator by Trimble in the video. I use it all the time and highly recommend it.

Geocaching CITO Events: Taking Out The Trash

One of the many cool things about geocaching is the ability to help clean up the environment. Something we call CITO or Cache In Trash Out. For the true geocachers who take this game, sport and obsession to heart will go from geocache to geocache and pick up trash and garbage. It is one of our ways of giving back to the environment which is our game board.

GeoSnippits - What NOT To Use As A Geocache

We had so much fun creating our GeoSnippits Geocaching Tutorial Video - GeoSnippits - Where Not To Hide A Geocache that we decided to take it to the next step to discuss What NOT To Use As A Geocache.

The idea is simple, if you show examples of what NOT to do then maybe newer geocachers will learn the basics and not repeat them out in the field.

This particular video is quite fun to watch with some great tips and some down right funny slapstick humor. Learn how heat, cold and moisture can effect geocaches and which ones are the worst to hide. Host HeadHardHat shows you the most obnoxious and also demonstrates the "dunk test" to see if the geocache in question is really waterproof.

Where NOT to Hide a Geocache

The latest installment of the GeoSnippits series answers the question: Where NOT to hide a geocache?

We had asked this question on the geocaching.com forum and within two days had over 2000 hits and over 70 suggestions. There were so many in fact we are going to do a multi part series on this very touchy subject.

The idea is simple, if we show newer geocachers where and how NOT to hide geocaches through example then maybe they won't do it as much. Let see what happens.

You Ask For It and We Deliver - GeoSnippits Tutorial Videos

I woke up this morning with about ten different ideas for what I wanted to do for my next GeoSnippits Tutorial Video. I reached over and started reading my emails via my blackberry phone. Isn't technology wonderful?

One of the first was an email from a very fine grandfather known as obxnomad a.k.a. Bob.
He mentioned how his grandson and he loved watching GeoSnippits and reading my blog. He also mentioned how it would be great if I made a tutorial on how to put together and place a geocache. It took me about half a second to think of how I would do it and what a great suggestion that it was. Needless to say thanks to Bob our latest and greatest GeoSnippits is now live on youtube.

I liked the idea so much that I have decided to do an entire series based on the viewpoint of putting out each size of geocache for the first time. In this video we concentrate on 35mm containers. We show how to cammi them up and some great suggestions on where to hide them in the wild. The next video will be on the small size but instead of concentrating more on the making of the geocache (which we will go over) but instead we will focus on finding good places to hide that size geocache. As we progress up through the sizes you will gain more and more information until you are a well informed geocacher.

The latest and greatest GeoSnippits Geocaching Tutorial Video shows how to paint ammo boxes. An ammo box is a military based metal box that is frequently used for geocaching.
