Several Unsung Heroes of GeoWoodstock IX

Andy McCaskey of RVNN.tv watching TheBadCop and Darrylw4
doing setup.
I'm absolutely sure that there were dozens of unsung heroes that helped make GeoWoodstock IX the Geocaching event that it was. I personally can't vouch for those out of the sphere of my influence but I sure can make sure that the people I did observe get some of the credit they are due. In my humble opinion the spotlight should be firmly fixed on my good friends Darryl Wattenberg a.k.a. Darrylw4, Drei a.k.a. Firefly03 and Chris Umphenour a.k.a TheBadCop and this is why.

At GeoWoodstock IX there was for the first time ever a media / podcast building dedicated for the recording and presentation of live shows. We had the Cache-a-maniacs Podcast, two episodes of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv), Geocaching Podcast, Caching in the Northwest Podcast and Cachers of the Round Table Podcast. That would be six live shows to essentially produce and record. Where did all the equipment come from? Look no further than Darrylw4 who brought pretty much his own personal studio and what ever else he needed was rented, borrowed and or appropriated. Then the equipment had to be moved from Michigan to GeoWoodstock IX in a rented van. Did I also mention that Darrylw4 paid most if not all of the expenses for the equipment? That was just the beginning. At 7:00am EST we were on site unloading the equipment and setting it up. Now that is where the spotlight also shows Drie and TheBadCop. All the equipment unloaded, setup and then tested before the shows started at 11am. Did I mention that we didn't have actual electricity to the building till 10? We also were supposed to have WIFI for the day but don't get me started there. This is not the place but Darryl had that as part of the show specs and was ready to go for that too. If it was actually provided. I digress.

Another view of the setup before the shows

We had six or seven mike and headset setups all working independently, full speaker systems, a sound board the size of Cleveland, PCs and a slew of other equipment all used for the day. This doesn't even include the video cameras and wireless mike systems, on and on.

Then once the shows were done they had to take everything down, pack it and get it back to Michigan. Wow!

So in my opinion, Darrylw4, Firefly03 and TheBadCop deserve some recognition and a good ole pat on the back with thanks for all their great efforts. GeoWoodstock IX would not have been the same without them being there. From all of us who enjoyed the shows, Thanks Guys!

March 2011 - Cachers of the Round Table - Photography and Geocaching

This month's Cachers of the Round Table Podcast hosted by Darrylw4 features a really great panel including Icenrye from Trackfiles, Sonny from the Podcacher Podcast and yours truly. We discuss in great depth photography and geocaching. Tons of really great information about all types of cameras and why we love taking photos of our geocaching experience.

You can go directly to this episode here:

Shooting The Breeze On Cachers Of The Round Table Podcast

There is no doubt about it, I love talking on podcasts. Even though I don't have a geocaching podcast I do love attending them. For one they are a perfect break from doing GeoSnippits videos which is developed and produced in a completely different way from podcasts. Secondly they are a fantastic opportunity to meet up and talk with other people and talents within the geocaching community. For example, I frequently haunt the live recording of the Geocaching Podcast with Darrylw4 and XpunkX. They record their weekly show live on Talkshoe which allows listeners to be able to not only participate in the show itself but can do live chat as well. We kind of think of it as the "peanut gallery" and part time cheering section. It is a fun interaction that you really don't get to do all that often while an actual show is being taped. The second podcast that I love to be a part of is Darrylw4's Cachers of the Round Table. This is a monthly podcast that is a real treat. Here a bunch of hosts from geocaching based shows (podcasts and video) get together and talk about geocaching stuff. Last night I had the pleasure of meeting up with two fellow geocachers that I have never really had a chance to talk directly with. They were Sonny from Podcacher Podcast and Icenrye from the TrackFiles videozine.

Just to show you how spread out we were there was Darrylw4 who lives in the metro Detroit area of Michigan, Sonny is in "Sunny San Diego", CA, Icenrye is in Prince George, BC and I am in Raleigh, NC. The topic for this session was photography and geocaching. All of us are huge photo bugs so it was one of those really fun times where everybody has their take and expertise to share. For me it was extra fun because I was finally able to jab with Sonny and Icenrye. I think that is what makes Cachers of the Round Table such a fun podcast to listen to. It's geocachers doing what geocachers do best - talking about geocaching. There is always a ton of fun examples, interesting tid-bits and good sound examples of experience that is coming from people who are passionate about geocaching.

So long story short (too late) I had an absolute blast finally being able to kick back and talk geocaching with some of my favorite geocaching friends. This particular episode of CRT is scheduled for March 2011 so keep an eye out. I will also let you know via my blog so you don't miss it.

I look forward to many more sessions with them and all the rest of the amazing geocaching folks out there. Oh and if you have not had a chance to listen to a geocaching based podcast before I highly recommend that you do. Below are the links to all the shows from everyone we talked about today. Enjoy!

HeadHardHat in January 2011 Cachers of the Round Table : Listing Services

If you don't know what the Cachers of the Round Table Podcast is please allow me explain. Think of this particular podcast as a group of geocachers sitting around discussing different geocaching topics that come to mind. You as the listener get to eavesdrop in on that conversation. The CRT podcast is hosted by none other than Darrylw4.

Darryl, Headhardhat, Drei
Darryl is one of the most hardest working individuals I know in the geocaching/media biz. Not only does he host CRT but also the Cache-A-Maniacs Podcast and co-host with Xpunkx and the Geocaching Podcast. He is a media wiz which means he knows his stuff in the television and video world as well as audio. You can see him featured on any number of other programs all over the internet. So be sure to check Darryl out on any of the links I am providing in this post.

That being said January's Cachers of the Round Table podcast is now available and ready to be enjoyed by you. The panel discusses many of the different geocaching listing services that are available and is a very good show.
You can hear it by clicking this link:

Cachers of the Round Table the StickPic and Me

One of the many cool things doing a video series like GeoSnippits and now a television show like Treasure Cache TV is it allows me to mingle with so many other geocachers who also happen to do interaction with the media. In this case podcasts. A podcast is sort of like a taped radio show that is placed on the Internet and can be listened to at any time. Darrylw4 of Cache-a-maniacs fame also heads up a podcast known as the Cachers of the Round Table. Here hosts of podcasts and in my case videos and TV get together to discuss different interesting topics that are related to geocaching in some way.

In this month's episode (June 2010)
http://www.cachersroundtable.com/index.php?post_id=620364 we discussed Caching Connections which touched everything from social networks like Twitter and Facebook to photograph based websites such as Flickr. A really good show if I must say. Actually I do, it's a really good show.

One of the other features on CRT is each of the guest panel describes their favorite gadget, gizmo or application for the month. Mine was an rather cool product known as the StickPic which can be attached to your personal camera and placed on a hiking pole to provide more background to your photos when you are by your self in the woods somewhere. Check it out.

That and more on this month's edition of the Cachers of the Round Table Podcast.
