Several Unsung Heroes of GeoWoodstock IX

Andy McCaskey of RVNN.tv watching TheBadCop and Darrylw4
doing setup.
I'm absolutely sure that there were dozens of unsung heroes that helped make GeoWoodstock IX the Geocaching event that it was. I personally can't vouch for those out of the sphere of my influence but I sure can make sure that the people I did observe get some of the credit they are due. In my humble opinion the spotlight should be firmly fixed on my good friends Darryl Wattenberg a.k.a. Darrylw4, Drei a.k.a. Firefly03 and Chris Umphenour a.k.a TheBadCop and this is why.

At GeoWoodstock IX there was for the first time ever a media / podcast building dedicated for the recording and presentation of live shows. We had the Cache-a-maniacs Podcast, two episodes of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv), Geocaching Podcast, Caching in the Northwest Podcast and Cachers of the Round Table Podcast. That would be six live shows to essentially produce and record. Where did all the equipment come from? Look no further than Darrylw4 who brought pretty much his own personal studio and what ever else he needed was rented, borrowed and or appropriated. Then the equipment had to be moved from Michigan to GeoWoodstock IX in a rented van. Did I also mention that Darrylw4 paid most if not all of the expenses for the equipment? That was just the beginning. At 7:00am EST we were on site unloading the equipment and setting it up. Now that is where the spotlight also shows Drie and TheBadCop. All the equipment unloaded, setup and then tested before the shows started at 11am. Did I mention that we didn't have actual electricity to the building till 10? We also were supposed to have WIFI for the day but don't get me started there. This is not the place but Darryl had that as part of the show specs and was ready to go for that too. If it was actually provided. I digress.

Another view of the setup before the shows

We had six or seven mike and headset setups all working independently, full speaker systems, a sound board the size of Cleveland, PCs and a slew of other equipment all used for the day. This doesn't even include the video cameras and wireless mike systems, on and on.

Then once the shows were done they had to take everything down, pack it and get it back to Michigan. Wow!

So in my opinion, Darrylw4, Firefly03 and TheBadCop deserve some recognition and a good ole pat on the back with thanks for all their great efforts. GeoWoodstock IX would not have been the same without them being there. From all of us who enjoyed the shows, Thanks Guys!

Behind the Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN) - GPSr Breakdown and Darrylw4 Talks GeoWoodstock IX

Tonight was a real treat for me. We were recording Episodes #21 and #22 of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) which were a whole lot of fun to discuss but the real enjoyment was being able to have my very good friend Darryl Wattenberg aka Darrylw4 as our special guest.

In Episode #21 we discussed at great lengths the different varieties of GPSr units. The main focal points were examined from a geocaching Flash Mob Event I held last year. It was HeadHardHat's Great GPSr Experiment and it was a really great example of how geocachers accuracy really is in the wild.

The other interesting part of this episode was Dave Dufour's encounter of a geocache within a long forgotten cemetery that was only a few hundred feet off of well traveled road. Another example of how geocachers find places no one would know existed if it were not for geocaching.

Episode #22 featured my good friend Darrylw4. Darryl is co-host of the Cache-a-Maniacs Podcast, co-host of the Geocaching Podcast with myself and XpunkX and the head honcho of the Cachers of the Round Table Podcast.  Tonight's episode discussed the Media/Podcast setup and schedule of GeoWoodstock IX. Since Darrylw4 is pretty much single handily equipping the entire effort. It seemed more than fitting to put his efforts into the spotlight.

The series of media and podcasts being made available has never been done before. This episode will be put to the head of the line so we can make the GeoWoodstock show. Be sure to watch RVNN.tv, Itunes and the blogs to catch the episode A.S.A.P.

Behind the Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Episode #208 Reopening The ET Highway

The issue of discussion for tonight's Geocaching Podcast just has to be one of the most bitter sweet incidents in Geocaching. We talked about the fall and rebirth of the ET Highway Power Trail. Boasting a goal of 1500 geocaches long. The ET Highway is a geocaching phenomenon and for a short time we came that close to losing it forever. Yep, it was going to be completely shut down and archived. Fear not fellow cachers, it is being reborn and will be kicking off with a bang.

Want to learn more about everything that happened? What happened and why? Find out from the creators Gus and Clay as they describe everything alien.

Listen to the Geocaching Podcast episode #208 coming out in the next day or so.

Hear you next week.

Behind the Scenes of Geocaching Podcast: Episode #207 - Geocaching Summer Preparedness

Yes it is that time of year again. The sun in our part of the world is kicking into overdrive and summertime is here. When the heat starts to become a factor what types of things do you make sure you take while geocaching? That was the subject of last nights Geocaching Podcast and with the help of our listeners we had a great list of things to talk about.

XpunkX and I (Darrylw4 unfortunately was attending a geocaching event) discussed a wide range of things from the most popular food and beverages to clothing and everything else you may need and why. To hear everything discussed you need to listen to the show. Speaking of which it is now available so if you want to give a listen you can do so right here:
http://geocachingpodcast.com/episode-207-geocaching-summer-preparedness/

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast Show #203 - Magellan eXplorist 610 Waterproof Hiking GPS

Last night's show was a lot of fun and we were able to talk about a rather cool piece of GPSr hardware, the Magellan eXplorist 610 Waterproof Hiking GPS

It was really kind of funny. Normally before the 9:30PM EST show actually begins XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself usually drop in about 15 minutes early to work out any preshow discussions. What usually happens is we immediately start talking about the subject of the evening and off we go. It's infectious and we can't help it. We just love to talk about geocaching stuff and as we were gabbing, I looked at the chat room discussion and noticed one of the listeners stating that they were mad at themselves for obviously missing the first part of the show. Then another listener said naw, the show hasn't started yet and we were just yacking as usual. I guess we do dig into a subject pretty well on the Geocaching Podcast. Anywho...

The early show banter was fun as usual, Darrylw4 was feeling better after being sick last week and actually missed last week's podcast. XpunkX has upped his biking usage including riding to work and I talked about some new geocaches I made out of paint ball carrier containers. You can get all the details when you listen to the actual podcast.

The main discussion for the evening dealt with the Magellan eXplorist 610 Waterproof Hiking GPS. XpunkX actually got his hands on one and took it out for a spin. Then we discussed what he found out about it including likes and dislikes. Then we tackled all the available features and how it compared to other models. It is a really extensive discussion and I highly recommend listening to the show for all the great details.

Well that's all for now about the Geocaching Podcast. Remember we record LIVE each and every week on Wednesdays, 9:30PM EST. Be sure to drop on by our website at http://www.gecachingpodcast.com for details on how to meet with us in the Talkshoe chat room. CYA next week!

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Show #201 - Losing Weight with Geocaching

Wow, last night's Geocaching Podcast was a lot of fun. In this weeks episode GP host Darrylw4 focused on how geocaching can be utilized for health benefits and in his case helpful with him losing 70 pounds!

Everybody was in good voice last night (we record live on Wednesdays at 9:30 PM EST) and for some strange and bizarre reason no technical difficulties. Without getting too deep into what was actually talked about I would like to say this. This episode is chock full of really useful information. Darrylw4, XpunkX and myself really nailed many of the concerns for good health and some really useful tools and applications you can use each and every day.

So give show #201 a listen by going to your favorite podcatcher software tool. It should be available sometime today or tomorrow. You will be glad you did.

Special thanks to everyone who was in attendance in the chat room while we recorded. You fine folks keep us going and always present insightful knowledge we couldn't get anywhere else.. Thank You!

See you next week!

Behind the Scenes: This Week on theGeocaching Podcast - #198 - April Cacher Coffee

Well folks it happens. Last night when Darrylw4, XpunkX and I were preparing for the evenings recording of the Geocaching Podcast there appeared to be some audio difficulties. Me being the smart mouth that I am of course remarked that for once everyone else was having problems and I was not. This of course jinxed the whole night because about three minutes into the program I started sounding like a Battlestar Gallactica Cylon on crack.

Needless to say I had to relinquish my mike to Darrylw4 and XpunkX for the remainder of the evening. Sigh.

The show itself was done very well and was the April Cacher Coffee so a wide range of topics were discussed. If you didn't get a chance to be on Talkshoe last night the actual podcast will be sent out in the next day of so for your listening pleasure. Try to hold back your disappointment. It will be fine. Honest... sigh.

PLEASE be sure to stop by next week (Wednesday, April 13th - 9:30pm EST) for a real opportunity to see HeadHardHat, yours truly, fumble his way through the podcast. It will be interesting because there is a real possibility that Darrylw4 won't be there and so it will be just XpunkX and me. Good times will be had by all. Just remember to show up with plenty of silly string.

Hear you then!

Geocaching Podcast: From Behind The Scenes - EPISODE 197 - Geowoodstock 2011

Co-Host HeadHardHat
I had so much fun last night with it being my official first time as co-host on the Geocaching Podcast and I want to say right off the bat THANK YOU for all the well wishes and for the large amount of people who were there with us in the LIVE chat room. I have to admit I was really happy to see the turn out and it made me feel so much better knowing you were there.

Tonights episode was discussing GeoWoodstock 2011 and our guest speaker was Wes (KCEPen). Lead hosts XpunkX, Darrylw4 and I were in attendance. I won't go into the details too much here but Wes knew his stuff and gave some really great insights for anyone wanting to attend either for the first time or the GeoWoodstock experienced as well.

What I will tell you is there are some amazing price packages for us this year. This is including items that is not just your average swag but items that you will want to have for genuine keepsakes. I know which package I will be going for. Oh and after the show I was able to talk to Wes a little more and one of the things that actually wasn't covered was the final registration days. I HIGHLY recommend that you register sooner rather than later. In fact you want to be registered before June 1st because registration closes a month before the actual events.

Okay I don't want to let anything slip so go and listen to the show for yourself.... Can't stand it... must tell... doh... There is one item available in most of the packages that is going to be done for the first time EVER at a Geowoodstock and it is a really cool ..................................................

We are sorry but the transmission to this blog post has been interupted. To learn all the Geowoodstock IX information be sure to listen to Episode 197 at the Geocaching Podcast website or where all the fine podcast establishments reside. http://geocachingpodcast.com/

You can hear HeadHardHat and the rest of the Geocaching gang each and every week on the Geocaching Podcast. Hear us record live 9:30 PM EST via talkshoe. Go to http://geocachingpodcast.com/ for more details.

HeadHardHat Joins The Geocaching Podcast Team As Co-Host

WOW! All I can say was how surprised and honored to be asked to join the Geocaching Podcast and to be part of their team.

Okay for all of my viewers who have been asking, now you can add Podcaster to my ever growing list of activities in the geocaching world. Lessee here, I am the creator and host of our geocaching series GeoSnippits Videos. They are seen all around the world via YouTube. I also make a separate set of GeoSnippits segments for Michigan Magazine TV (RFDTV Network) which is seen twice each week in all 50 states. Oh and I write this little blog that apparently a whole bunch of geocachers like to read from all the time. So yeah, I had some spare time to work with. Note - I am also a Sr. QA Engineer to help pay for my geocaching obsession.

Darrylw4, HeadHardHat and XpunkX at
last years Cachercon 2010
So enough about me lets talk about the Geocaching Podcast. If you want to really feel a part of something special then I highly recommend that you join XpunkX, Darrylw4, Montu-Rider and myself each Wednesday at 9:30pm EST where we do LIVE recordings of the show each week. Not only can you listen to the show as it is being taped but you can voice your thoughts in the chat room that all can see and react from. I usually referred to it as the "peanut gallery" and you can influence the show by the information and comments you provide. It always has a lively discussion and your comments are appreciated.

Even if you don't make the live recording the Geocaching Podcast is presented each week and is available via the Geocaching Podcast website and many of your favorite podcast sites as well. You can get all the details plus the blog, special features, past recordings and so much more at the website so click the link below and check it out. I am looking forward to seeing you there! Geocaching Podcast Website Link
