GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Evil Nano Geocache

One of the really cool features about geocaching is the ability for geocachers to invent geocaches. The possibilities are almost endless and limited only to our imagination. One thing for sure is if someone creates a geocache and the design is solid others will modify it to their liking. That is the way it should be and keeps the game, sport, obsession fresh and fun.

This particular geocache is one of those adaptations. It originated from my How To Make An Evil Ant Hill Geocache video of which I made last year. Recently I received an email from Seth Jones who sent in some photos where he made a geocache based off the Ant Hill geocache and instead of using bondo he used a plastic resin. Check out the post I made about it here.

I was immediately intrigued and had to make some geocache versions for myself. This video shows how I made them and the end results. I completely expect our viewers to come up with their adaptations as well.

A Very Nice Modification of My Evil Ant Hill Geocache

I received an email from fellow geocacher Seth Jones who sent me some photos of a modified Evil Ant Hill Geocache. Check out what he wrote:

I got a smallish box, lined it with a plastic bag, and then made a small pile of dirt (you need it to be fairly pure dirt, for easier removal later. No rocks, grass, twigs, etc)

-- Then I made a large batch of plaster of paris, and poured it over the dirt, making a plaster cast of the dirt hill. After it set, I peeled it out of the plastic, and washed the dirt out of the bottom. I then filled the cavity where the dirt was with a 2-part resin from the craft store. Before the resin set, I implanted a small plastic container with a screw-top lid. You've probably seen it: it's a touch bigger than a bottle-cap.

After it set overnight, I cracked it out of the plaster, and chipped out the crevices. (soaking it in water really helped here). I then hit it with some textured brown spray paint. I placed it at the base of a tree just at the edge of some woods. There are some vines climbing the tree that provide a small buffer of deadspace around the trunk. I have the container there, amongst the leaves.

Way to go Seth! A very EVIL geocache to be sure!

HHH's Lunchtime GotD - No It's Under THAT Rock

Geocaching rock hides is like yogurt, it's an acquired taste.

I personally am slightly uncomfortable with them in North Carolina because of the rather wide assortment of snakes that frequent these parts. Let's just say that every rock turning is an adventure and poke it with a stick can mean the difference between a smiley and a trip to the hospital.

Anyways I usually give rock hides about 15 minutes before the fun factor runs out and I move on. Todays find, yes the pun is intended, if it twir a snake it would have bit me but thankfully it didn't.

I signed the Lunchtime Geocache of the Day log and moved on to a chicken sandwich. The area was very scenic and the pond with fountain was a pleasant view.

My Birthday Lunchtime GotD: Getting Cocky

Okay I admit it. I bit off more than I could chew for a lunchtime geocache. I originally went for a 3.5/3.5 that I had my eye on for a while. Went for it and no joy before I had to move on :(

Yet another geocache was just down the road. It was an easy find and gave me a smiley for my birthday.

So do as I suggest and not as I do.. Keep your lunchtime geocaches at a 2 or less if you want to have time enough for some grub.. Speaking of which I think I will have to hit a drive-thru.

The FIRST Geocaching TV Show - HeadHardHat's TreasureCache

Yes you read that right...

In September of 2010 there will be a 30 minute television show dedicated to the game, sport, yes obsession of geocaching. I was so pleased to be able to give the announcement of this history making event at this years Cachercon 2010 in Troy, Michigan.

I braved two snow storms, twelve hours of driving and 750 miles to make it to Cachercon. There I had a great time as one of the many geocacher speakers who gave some of our knowledge from within the geocaching world.

After my presentation the announcement was made and I still can hear the hoots and hollers as the main slides introduced the show's name.

HeadHardHat's TreasureCache

It was a moment I will not soon forget. If anything I am so pumped about doing the show my mind is going in a million different directions at once. So what can I tell you at this moment because I know there are a lot of questions out there. The issue is not all of it is allowed to go public just yet so you are just going to have to be patient. I know it's hard for me too.

What I can tell you is this. There will be a show... that's always a good start.

Currently we have some HUGE sponsors contending for the show itself. I can't say who of course but they are the biggest in the geocaching world. As for the network, we have two who are the largest in both prime-time and the cable networks. Won't know which until the smoke settles.

For all our Michigan Magazine fans do not worry. I plan on continuing to have our GeoSnippits on that fantastic show for as long as Barry wants them there. None of this may have happened at all if it was not for MMTV.

So I know this is not a fountain of information but please rest assured that all the information that becomes available will be broadcast to you, either on this blog, Twitter or Facebook so if you are not signed up to us, please do so. There are places to join on the right side of this blog.

HHH's Lunchtime GotD - Pill Container / Bison Tube

This was a really nice park and grab lunchtime geocaching treat. It's a pill holder, just a little bigger than your standard bison tube.

What I really liked about this find was the very scenic pine woods you go thru to get to it. With the sun shining just so it was beautiful to just be there. Took some extra photos to remember it by. Bonus - Found a Quiznos on the way there. Love good sub shops.

Lunchtime Geocache of the Day: Love Them Bushes

Yeah I know what you are thinking but this is a family orientated blog.

Bush hunts are usually bug ridden, wasp infested, pointy leaved pains in the buttocks. Yet every once in a while you find a nice soft bush (shad-dup) where your efforts are not so bad. This geocaching find of the day was like that. No bugs, wasps nor pointy leaves, a real joy. Though the log was pretty wet (shad-dup, shad'n up) I managed to sign my name. In North Carolina where the Holly Bush runs wild. There are a lot of geocaches in these holiday festive plants. I highly recommend when geocaching to make sure you have a good pair of work gloves in your geocaching pouch for just such hunts. They have extremely sharp leaves.

For this find though, all in all a fun lunchtime treat.

Now for some lunch and to get my mind out of the gutter :)

Lunchtime Geocache of the Day: Guard rail Caches

Hey, I know those guys...

It is pretty amazing how many types and sizes of geocaches that can be found with a standard guard rail hide. From magnetic patches, 35mm containers, to specialty holders like the one shown above to some rather large caches. You never know what you are going to find until you go look. So put yourself up to the test and get out there and do just that! You'll be glad you did.

Happy Holidays To You And Yours

Greetings all and Happy Holidays to you!

Well the holiday season is wrapping up and we have enjoyed our time with friends and family this year but I have to tell you that I personally can't wait to get back into the geocaching swing of things.

So if you are wondering why my posts have been pretty pithy lately or if I stopped making GeoSnippits it's because of all the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Fear not because 2010 is going to be a great year for GeoSnippits, Michigan Magazine TV and me personally. We have so many HUGE announcements, contests and geocaching goodness coming your way so stay tuned.

The Greatest Form of Flattery...

I was pleased as punch when my friend geocacher TripCyclone asked if he could post some modifications of my most evil creation HeadHardHat's Evil Ant Hill Geocache. When I create a new geocache for GeoSnippits my intent is to create discussion and for others to take the basic concept and run with it.

The moment I published the GeoSnippits video for Ant Hill Trip was the first to say how cool of a geocache it was and by the way how cool would it be if we did this.... So I am not surprised when he asked to put a post or two on his blog Creative Caches and Containers.

HeadHardHat's Evil Ant Hill Geocache

First and foremost I have to give credit to one of our GeoSnippits viewers TheWhiteCroe, who took me down this EVIL path by giving me the suggestion to see if a fake rock could be made out of bondo. I will be sending him an Official GeoSnippits pathtag for the suggestion.

It all came out of trying to prototype the geocache in the first place. I started out very similar to how it is described in the video. I simply made some bondo and poured it out on top of the 35mm container. I observed how quickly the bondo started to harden so I started piling it up on top of itself. Before I knew it I had that same shape you see out of the Close Encounters movie. It certainly didn't look like a rock. In fact it looked more like a dog turd but I wanted to see how the textured spray paint was going to look so I painted it anyways. After it dried I looked at it again and the light stone paint looked a lot more like sand than anything. Then it popped in my brain, "well that looks a whole lot like an ant hill..."

So after trying a couple of different stone colors I was really pleased with the results. The rest is now history and my EVIL Ant Hill made from bondo is out in the world. The video wasn't out more than a couple of minutes before the comments started pouring in. One suggestion was to use a nano instead of a 35mm container to make it even smaller. I just love how the main template of an idea comes out and people use their own ideas to make it better. All I can say is go for it.

I had a blast making this video and inventing the Ant Hill Geocache, now back to making that geocache look like a rock. Where did I put that bondo?
