Where In The World Is Pete The Parrot? Groningen, Netherlands

Well know geocaching travel bug Pete The Parrot

Ah, world renown travel bug Pete the Parrot (TB21K5T) has been on the move again and back in January traveled an additional 11,378 miles from New Zealand all the way up to the Netherlands. Pete is one well traveled party animal with well over 36,000 miles under his belt.

Pictured below Pete is making a new friend at a game preserve called The Parrot Place near Kerikeri.

Pete The Parrot has been travelling the world since April of 2008 and has been enjoying all the fun and excitement down under. Even though the temperatures are not as warm where he is now. Pete stayed for quite the extended stay in Europe back in 2010.

If you want to check out Pete's map, photos and everything else he has been up to visit geocaching.com and use the travel bug code of TB21K5T. Enjoy.

Geocaching Travel Bugs Can Go Away For A While: Green Dragon

Guardian Angel the Green Dragon is back in geocaching circulation.

I have had geocaching travel bugs disappear for a long time. Many never to be seen or heard from again. So it is always nice to see one come back from the great beyond and placed back into the wild.

For example my Guardian Angel the Green Dragon travel bug which was last reported way back in August 29 of 2010 suddenly was placed in a geocache today I was very pleased to see this.

Green Dragon was placed June 10th, 2008 and has accumulated a modest 1600 miles. If you want to learn more as to why it is so duly named and his travel exploits go to geocaching.com and check out TB26XYW.

Discovering a Geocaching Traveller in Sputnik 2010

Recently I attended a really cool Geocaching event hosted by none other than the Dirtbag Geocaching Society. I will be telling more about this event and the DGS in a not so distant future posting. In fact we featured them in an upcoming Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) episode. Until then let me tell you about a travel bug I discovered there that did some real out of this world traveling.

Meet "Bryan Lightyear" (TB3XWR8) a founder's gnome tag that has been transferred into a near-space astronaut. Bryan was one of three travel bugs that were placed in a geocache, attached to a weather balloon and shot 101,000 feet into the air. It landed 124 miles from where it took off and is now a multi-cache.

Stage one is where it took off and stage two is where it landed. Not only is this such an amazing idea to begin with, the photos that were shot during the flight are breathtaking. You can read all the details at the Sputnik 2010 project's main website here:
http://gaia.terrasunder.org/

I want to thank DantonioG and the rest of the geocachers at the Dirtbag Geocaching Society event for all the information and really amazing discoveries.

Where In The World Is Pete The Parrot? North Island, New Zealand

I received a status on Pete The Parrot one of my well traveled travel bugs. Pete is a party animal and apparently has whooped it up pretty good in the North Island, New Zealand area. Currently on the move in the hands of a geocacher named The Toffeez. Pete had quite the new year already. One of the things I also thought really cool were all the photos taken of him while he has been in NZ. Here is one of the more recent shots.

Pete The Parrot enjoying some NZ foliage
I am so glad on how well Pete has been taken care of on his adventures and really want to thank everyone involved.

Currently Pete has over 23,000 miles under his wing with much more to come. You can check out his page here:

GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Geocaching Travel Bug

Pete The Parrot is a real party animal travel bug.

It never fails, not that it is a bad thing mind you. I have a tentative list of all the GeoSnippits videos that I want to do in the near future. Hundreds of them actually but I usually keep a list of about thirty near me at all times. I was just about to start the next on the list and suddenly I get a bunch of requests from our viewers that pertain to a subject I had no intention of doing right now but how can I let down my peeps? So that is why out of the blue I created this latest GeoSnippits - Make Your Own Geocaching Travel Bug. I literally received five requests from different viewers in the same week. So why not?

This is actually a really informative and fun video to watch. Filmed almost entirely in green screen we show you how to make your own travel bug, register it on geocaching.com, package it so it is ready to go into the wild and finally actually show you it's placement into a nearby travel bug hotel.

By the way I don't actually note in the video that you can purchase travel bug id tags just about anywhere online. There are tons of online stores that sell them and they cost about $5.00US.

Hope you enjoy this informative GeoSnippits geocaching video and keep those suggestions coming cus yours might be the next one.

Where in the World is Pete the Parrot? The Black Forest

Oh this is so awesome.

My buddy Pete the Parrot who is THE true party animal has been hanging around Europe for quite some time. Well now he is partying in The Black Forest of Unterbraend.

A geocacher, EinHaufchenSand, took these photos when he visited the geocache that Pete is currently residing in.

I don't know about you but I want to go geocaching in the Black Forest.

What is a Pathtag and What is a Geocoin?

There are two different types of "coins" that can be found in the geocaching world.
Note, I am not including personally made, wooden or other signature coins in this discussion.

These coins are very popular and work slightly different from each other. They are Pathtags and Geocoins.

Pathtags

Pathtags are about the size of a dime and have a hole in them. The front is a very customizable enamel face which can hold a lot of detail and colors. On the back is an ID number that can be logged at the Pathtags website http://www.pathtags.com.

Pathtags are affordable trade items that are meant to be kept in a geocachers personal collection. In other words you can keep them. Unlike geocoins that are the property of individuals and move from one geocache to the next.

To design your own pathtag you go to the pathtag website and for about $99.00US get one of their starter kits. When complete you receive 50 pathtags to start trading. That's about $2.00US a pathtag. After that you may refill your pathtags for about $1.00US each. They are not as expensive because they already have your design on file.

Once you start trading there is a complete trading manager that takes over for you where people can ask if you want to trade pathtags and who sent what to whom. A world map is also available so you can see roughly where your pathtags are in other collectors possession.

Geocoins

Geocoins to me are the "shiny objects" that first put the word treasure in geocaching "treasure hunts". They range in size from about 2 to 3 inches in diameter. The first time I found a geocoin my eyes got wide and the feel of a well made geocoin made me drool just holding it. Then when I found out that you could track it on geocaching.com and actually see all the places it has been I was hooked.

Now the big difference between pathtags and geocoins is that geocoins is someone else's property. They are not meant to be kept but instead move from one geocache to the next. As heartbreaking as it is to find some you would really like to keep for yourself they are to roam free on the geocaching game-board.

Geocoin Personal Collections

Now can you have a personal geocoin collection? Sure you can but you have to either buy them from one of the many geocoin stores on the internet or trade them with other goecachers. I usually do that when attending geocaching events. The cost of a geocoin can range from about $8.00USD and up. There are a couple in my collection I paid $30.00USD at an auction. It's all about how much a geocoin is worth to you.

So can you make your own geocoins to sell and or trade? Sure, there are several companies out there that will make a geocoin that you designed but don't get sticker shock when you see the final price. Depending on the quality and weight of the geocoin itself and the minimal amount that needs to be made for an order you can be looking at some big time financial commitment $$$

To sum things up I have found that pathtags have become the best bang for the buck when it comes to personal trading items for geocachers. They are less expensive to create and fit many a geocacher's budget. Geocoins on the otherhand are the wandering nomads and the kings of the geocaching coin. They are prized when shown in collections and bring that amazing "wow" factor when found and released.

The choice of what works best with these treasures is of course entirely up to you. My advice is to take your time designing them to exactly what you want because you will be investing some of your hard earned cash in their making.

Where in the World is Pete the Parrot?

Well apparently my travel bug Pete the Parrot is back to his wondering ways. He attended a geocaching event in Germany over the weekend where he was discovered about a dozen times and since then has landed in Espace Mittelland, Switzerland (BE/SO) that is about 335.6mi S of where he was.

Pete has 10617 miles as the crow flies and it now does not appear to be slowing down. I hope he sends back some nice photos of his time in Switzerland.

Go Pete Go! What a party animal.

TB Pete The Parrot Back To His Partying Ways

Okay this one falls under the category of "never expected this, now what?".

Pete the Parrot is a real party animal. He is a travel bug that went into the wild way back in April of 2008. Since then Pete left the United States in August,2008 in search of the companionship with geocachers abroad.

Pete has partied in Turkey, Oppland, Sweden, Islas Baleares and over a year ago landed in Nordrhein-Westfalen. He has seen more of the world and hung out in more interesting places than I can only dream of.

Then suddenly around September of last year Pete stopped moving. I didn't really notice until recently and sent out an email to the last person who recorded having him. The response that came back sort of bugged me a bit.

Apparently the geocacher who had found Pete in September had died. The email was from his wife who said she had found Pete with the geocaching stuff left by her husband and that she would get him back in circulation soon. I wrote back and gave my condolences and thanked her for getting Pete back into the wild.

Now how many times does something like that happen? I have heard of travel bugs being lost, stolen or abandonded by noob geocachers who lost interest in the game but to loose a travel bug due to a geocachers death? Hit me odd for some reason.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? Let me know.

-HHH

Update To TB Wolfgang Von PitterPat

Was just checking on my daughter's Travel Bug 'Wolfgang Von PitterPat" and found out he has some new tags added and some great new pics as it had travelled with the Leave No Trace Travelling Trainers.

I first found Wolfgang with the Leave No Trace crew completely by chance as I was wondering the Internet one day. You can read that article here: Geocaching 101…We Need Your Help

Now there is a Part Deux which furthers the adventures of Wolfgang as he says good-bye and is placed in a new cache within the southwest. Find out what and where with all the information and photos here: Geocaching 101: Part Deux.

I want to thank the Leave No Trace crew for taking such great care of Wolfgang it was greatly appreciated by both myself and my daughter.

The Power of a Travel Bug - Cancer Awareness

You see I start writing this article - again and I can already feel my throat tightening up and a some what unsuccessful fight to hold back the tears ensues. One or two manage to make it through. I push through the millions of images that well up like some broken water main but it is important to get my feelings as they emerge. It's important for you to understand that some things in life have a deep impact and to me, this is one of them.

Travel bugs are usually a fun filled trinket that has a special silver tag and id number attached to let you know they are not swag but special geocaching travellers. They are not to be kept but to constantly be moving and follow specific goals as they go from one geocache to the next. Similar to geocoins but different because they literally can be anything. I have seen stuffed and plastic toys, car parts, posters, some things unidentifiable all with the purpose of being free spirits in the geocaching playing field.

All are to be enjoyed yet some have a distinct and sometimes not so cheery purpose. Some give a message of hope or to allow the finder an awareness of some useful meaning. For example my very first travel bug found was from a series of Diabetes Awareness travellers. It was nothing more than a small blue circle of enamel and metal with the familiar silver tag. When you went to the travel bug page you then learned about the Diabetes information and where you could get more. I thought of it as a great way of getting the word out without being pushy.

Shortly after finding that travel bug I also had a wish to send out information about another awareness and that was for cancer. The reason for that was due to the passing of my first wife Sharon from that dreaded disease. Sharon was a shining beacon of life and was the type of person who insisted on helping others including her 13 years of Sunday School teaching. She was the quintessential farmers daughter and constantly gave tails of her adventures on her parents farm. In 2001 Sharon died at age of 42 from ovarian cancer.

So in her memory I created a travel bug called "Farmers Daughter - Cancer Awareness" (TB21K6F) and sent it out 13 months ago to this day. It has travelled to this point over 3900 miles from the east coast and is currently buzzing around Utah somewhere.

During it's travels there have been times where I noticed that it would be picked up by someone and held, sometimes for several months. At first I did not understand what was going on and I would send a quick email saying hey, how's it going and would you mind moving it along. Then I would get a response back. Each time someone either knew someone who has or died from cancer. That or is going through therapy and wanted to know if they could hang onto a bit longer because it gave them comfort or hope to keep going (more tears welling up). I don't ask anymore.

So when you do see a travel bug or geocoin that has a little more meaning behind it besides wanting it to go to another country or a different part of the world. Please pause and take a moment to reflect. I have always said that geocaching is so much more than just a game. Sometimes pieces of our lives and a connection we do not always understand are woven into our world of a game board.

We miss you Sharon.

-HHH

A Geocaching TB Photograph To Make You Smile

One of the cooler things about having a Geocache Travel Bug is how geocachers love to photograph them. Sometimes you receive a shot that shows when a geocacher really gets it and puts that extra thought into the picture. It really can make you smile when they do. Here's a good example.

Meet my extra special "Bill Engvall" tribute travel bug. In one of his routines, Bill describes an unusual animal known as the "DorkFish" and he has a really strong appetite for one thing: corndogs.

Geocacher Coresrlooking took Dorkfish on a nice 556.4mile ride but before they let him go they fed him.. Yep the kids made sure he had a nice helping of corndogs... How cool is that?

Thanks guys Dorkfish really appreciated it and so do we...

You can keep up with Dorkfish as he continues his adventures by watching his travel bug page here:

HooHaa TB Race Update: P.J.'s Quilt Covers Second Place

Well in a surprising change of pace our very own P.J. who came up with the HooHaa Travel Bug Race has now moved into second place. Apparently some action was required after recent rumors that the soft and cuddly "Quilt" just wasn't made of the right fluff. This left him in stitches and forced the move to sew up this race. We will have to wait a see if Quilt can continue to move it's fat quarters at a winning pace.

For all the information about the HooHaa TB Race including the latest standings, race cartoons and more, hurry on down to the bottom right of this blog.

HooHaa TB Race Late Entry Joins The Fun

We have a late entry in the world famous HooHaa TB Race. The owner TripCyclone has joined our gaggle of merry travellers in what should be the smackdown of smackdown travel bug races. Even with the handicap of starting two weeks late in the race. Trip's TB "Easy Flyer" still has a chance to converse with my TB "Just a Nut" and GolfGunny's "Electric Bug" because we haven't been able to get out of the starting gate yet... It's bad enough that Go_Man's "GoGo T.Urtle" left yesterday. Sheez! Guess I am going to have to put up a flare or something... Ah well all part of the fun.

Plenty of smackdown to come for the next year. Check out all the HooHaa TB Race stats in the bottom right of my blog.

To get all the juicy blow by blow coverage be sure to RSS subscribe to this "Obsessed" blog or get our posts via email! Either way we have you covered.
