Where Have All The Geocaching FTF (First To Find) Hounds Gone?

HeadHardHat Back in 2008
I have been recently going through my blog's (GeoCache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right?) archives and found myself all the way back to 2008 where I found a post of my first FTF or in geocaching terminology a First To Find.

How exciting it was learning of the new posting and actually getting to the geocache before anyone else. I remember opening the geocache with my heart pounding in my chest. Nervously examining the log book and realizing that there were no other signatures - CLEAN SHEETS - oh joy, rapture! Then to discover the coolest of the cool, a FTF Prize, which consisted of a bunch of military navy memorabilia that I still hold dear as a collectible.  How cool is that?!?  As my obsession grew with FTFs I had incorporated alerts which immediately went to my email if a new geocache was published in my area. Then an assessment had to be made of me actually getting there first and what the consequences would be if I left at that moment to obtain it. For example, how mad my wife would be because it was 1:30am or my boss because it was during a work day; decisions, decisions. I can't tell you how many times I have bumped into law enforcement officers in the wee hours of the night with flashlight in hand and looking in small crevices via strange locations. All part of the the FTF fun.

Then there were the FTF hounds. Those are the dozen or so geocachers in a local area that all love getting the FTF before anyone else. Which then makes it a race and potential bragging rights for the winner and sad disappointment for the rest - nanners. Of course that just added a whole new level of excitement for FTFs.

Those were the days.

Now in 2012 I really don't hear so much anymore about FTFs, at least not with the same fervor I used to. In my career I have over 100 under my belt but I have to admit they have lost the sparkle they once had for me and I am curious if that is the same for the geocaching community or is it just my perspective?

In years past FTFs for many it was a competition for bragging rights in the geocaching community but if it has lost it's zing then why? I don't hear about FTF prizes anymore either. For many of the geocaches that I have placed I would always have some sort of FTF prize waiting. Even purchased FTF geocoins to go to the winner. As stated, don't hear about them as much anymore - pity.

So the big question is how do we get people motivated again for FTFs? Why are FTFs loosing their appeal and how can we correct it? What are your views? Let me know so I can spread the word. Would love to hear from you.

SWEET - A FTF at a Travel Bug Hotel.

Okay the debate of geocaching and is it all about the numbers will continue as long as the activity exists. The other debate is of the importance of FTFs (First To Finds) is still a favorite with me. I am a FTF hound and freely admit it. There is an exhilaration that goes with that race to be first that keeps the game interesting for me. I don't know what gets my heart pumping more. The flight to ground zero, the need for a quick find or that final moment when you open up that log book to see those clean sheets. When everything clicks there is nothing like it and when someone beats you to it the sting stays with you a bit even though you know it is all part of the game. Then there is that fun situation when multiple geocachers meet up at the same time. I do like those because we all know why we are there and it is always cool to meet up with fellow geocachers.

This geocache find was a travel bug hotel and I found this Homer TB very cool and will move him on shortly. Now it's time for some lunch and then edit more GeoSnippits videos. Until the next FTF comes along...

That Will Be Two Lunchtime GotD FTFs Please

Well after getting skunked yesterday the results of today are a lot better.

Yeppers, I not only found one Lunchtime Geocache of the Day but Two. I was fortunate and they happened to be close enough to each other and by the same hider that I was able to make quick work of them. Ahh the sweet taste of victory and speaking of taste it's time to move on down the road for some grub.

Lunch will taste just a little better today I think.

HHH's Lunchtime GotD: FTF-No DNF-Yes - Wall Hunt

Well no joy in Mudville today. I knew I was in trouble when I noticed no one bagged this FTF geocache. There are oodles of FTF hounds in the area and an FTF just does not sit for more than a few minutes in these parts.

Then as I walked to ground zero I realized my suspicions were justified. For before me was a wall sometimes up to 80 feet high and about .20 of a mile long. The chosen spot for ground zero was actually curved where the wall took a 90ish degree turn. This meant that the ground zero coords were within 60' for a very long stretch of said wall.

I tried my darnedest to find it but many of the brick joints have tons of small stones on them so if it is a nano the finder is going to have quite the challenge to figure this one out.

I just plain ran out of time for this micro in a wall hunt and will give it another go in the future.

HHH's Lunchtime GotD - FTF!

This lunchtime geocache of the day is extra sweet because it is a FTF (First To Find) for me. Clean sheets is da best. I didn't try hard because it was sitting there all day so I was sure somebody already picked it up. Awesome.

HHH Lunchtime GotD: FTF - Almost!

Nothing gets my heart pumping like the prospect of a FTF (a first to find) in the geocaching world.

Well today literally as I was walking out my office door an alert went off of a new geocache and it was only four miles from me. GO FOR IT!

So I hit the gas pedal and took off at lightning, err, posted and safe speeds until I reached my destination. Looked around for about three seconds and found my prize.

Breathlessly I opened the container with the hopes of finding clean sheetz. Ummmmm, no. Somebody beat me to the geocache 19 minutes before me. Curses to you Moncure Bee Dude! It just goes to show you the fervor geocachers can have for FTFs. So I will have to settle with just a smiley for todays Lunchtime Geocache of the Day.

Lights..Camera..GeoSnippits For Michigan Magazine TV

When I woke up this morning I did not expect to have a geocaching FTF (First To Find) waiting for me. First to Finds for me is pure bragging rights and there are several other geocachers in the area that are just as passionate as me so if I wanted it I had to move fast.

The waypoint had it about 10 miles away which is on the long side of me getting there first. What drove me was that if I was able to pull this off I could turn it into a really neat GeoSnippits segment for Michigan Magazine TV. I thought to myself how many people who are new to geocaching or never been out geocaching have ever seen a real FTF? So in one fell swoop I grabbed my video gear, jumped into my geocachemobile and RACED (at the limit of posted speeds) towards my goal.

Within a few minutes I had neared the parking are for the geocache. I was so glad that I brought my video camera along because this particular cache was located in the wooded area of a neighborhood park. Complete with beautiful trails and scenic pond but before I could get all that wonderful filler footage I had to find the geocache and sign, hopefully, the clean sheetz.

Armed with my trusty pouch, walking stick and cameras I was off. My Black Berry was fully charged and I used my geocaching application Geocache Navigator to find the correct route along the trails. The beauty of having an app like that on my phone is I did not have to take the time to download the information about the new geocache. It is pulled directly from the phone connection via the Internet and wha-la instant information.

After walking about .20 of a mile I reached ground zero and began looking around. Within a couple of minutes I had the geocache in hand and much to my glee the sheetz were clean. I had found my FTF for the day. The coolest about the whole thing was I captured it all on video and now it is going to be made into a GeoSnippits segment for Michigan Magazine TV.

Now normally I have my right hand girl and daughter Miss Geoness with me. She is my camera girl and keeper of me making a complete fool out of my self when I am in front of the lens. Today though she was at school and I was by myself. This makes filming a bit difficult. One of the tools that I have recently added to my collection is pictured above. It is a flexible tripod like base that can wrap around anything. In this case there was a bent tree that worked quite well. It allows me to set up shots without the use of a full blown tripod and is small enough to keep in my geocaching pouch. It is great as a third hand for a regular camera and as you can see also works well with light video cameras. You can find these in pretty much any camera store or like me a local department store and they will run you about $20.00. Just a helpful tip from me to you.

Well I have to get back to editing this episode for GeoSnippits and Michigan Magazine TV. GeoSnippits is shown in all 50 states on MMTV which can be seen on Direct TV, Dish Network, Sky Angel and Comcast. Michigan Magazine TV is featured on the RFD-TV Network.

Hope to see you out on the trails...

Haughtily Fun First To Find

In Stem, NC on the way to work and standing on the fringe of a cemetery. An old one with some of the dates going back to the late 1700s.

The hide itself was placed very nicely into an old tree hole with well placed bark as cover. A very eerie yet peaceful FTF. Not sure why I am attracted to cemeteries but they are fascinating. Must be something with the history that has been and the time passed.

I currently have a very cool cemetery hide myself and have received nothing but nice comments to it's Uniqueness. Its GC1NK95 "At Peace and Not To Be Forgotten" if interested.

Finally Some FTF Respect

(RESPECT patio stone on top of regular sized geocache)

I had tried this easy and quite inventive geocache late last week and had to DNF it. Mainly because the cache wasn't hidden at time of publishing. Little details. For some magical reason it remained unfound all weekend so I swooped in this morning and snagged it.

If anything I have a great motivation to make a GeoSnippits video on guidelines for how NOT to hide a geocache.

Taking The Kids To A Geocaching First To Find

This was an extremely rainy wet Saturday afternoon when my BlackBerry went off telling me a geocache just published. I quickly read over the description and found that it was only five miles away. After stopping myself from leaping into my car all by myself I asked my daughter Geoness if she wanted to go for her second FTF.

"Can Maria come?", she asked. This was her neighborhood friend of which they are usually joined at the hip doing "pre-teen" stuff.

"Sure no problem", says I but I warned that Maria needed to ask her parents for permission first.

After a few minutes we all jumped into the geocache-mobile and were off for the 1/1 find.

The cache site was interesting being in a small garden of a Church. It was even more interesting because a Saturday service was in process. I slowly drove to the back of the parking lot without a single muggle in sight. They apparently were all inside which gave us the opportunity to check out the geocache and possibly get the FTF.

Being a 1/1 it was a quick find and the girls quickly went through and traded swag before we put everything back in it's hidey hole. The First To Find was ours.

On the way back I asked if Maria liked her first taste of geocaching and her first words was to ask if we could do some more. That of course was when the gully washer rain started so we will have to postpone for another day.

Bed Time FTF Snack With A Side Order of Cops

The owner of the Geocache that I went for tonight said to be careful because the police like to hang around the same area as the cache site. So when I hopped into my geocache-mobile at 10:30 at night I was not surprised to see two police squad cars sitting right where the geocache was supposedly hidden. Now I am not going to let the law slow me down from getting an FTF if I can help it.

I simply drove up next two the two cars with my dome light turned on and rolled down my window.
"Evening officers, sorry to disturb you but I am a geocacher and if it was okay with you I would like to look for a geocache that was just placed about 80 feet over there. Would that be okay?", blank stares return towards me as I start explaining what geocaching was.
"You are more than welcome to join me if you would like. Shouldn't take more than five minutes or so", I say as calmly as if asking for directions.

"Well I unfortunately have a run to go onto but he may be interested", stated the young officer.
"Sure I heard of geocaching but never tried it before", said the other.

So off we went after I showed him the printed off geocache page. I told him roughly what we were looking for which was a regular sized geocache and it was hanging in a tree. We walked down a slight slope and within a few minutes I spotted it and showed the geocache to the officer. He examined it and I showed the log book and other trinkets that were inside. After signing the log and putting everything back in place it was time to leave so I thanked him and went on my merry way. What fun this evening adventure was. Not only was it fun doing a night time FTF but having a police escort made it that much more exciting.

Hopefully I have added one more law enforcement to our ranks of geocachers. If anything it makes for a great story which is starting to become the norm for me.. Just loving it...

CO-FTF on an Early Morning Night Time Cache Hunt

When you know that there are several very competitive FTF hounds in your area the urge to be first can be very compelling. For me, depending on where I am during the day and where the newly published geocache actually is will tell me who I am up against and how drastic of measures I need to take to achieve "clean sheetz".

For example, the posting to a particular geocache went live at 9:30 last night. It was about ten miles away and so I actually debated whether I just go out and get it or wait until morning after I drop my daughter off for school. After contemplating the effort that would need to be taken to tell my wife I was going out geocaching - again - or getting a good nights sleep in an actual bed. I decided morning would be best.

After booting my child out of the car and speeding into the night..., err, after waiting for the school bus to arrive and pick up my child from the bus stop I carefully and safely merged into traffic on my way to the geocache site.

Upon arrival I realized that it was still pitch black out and this would be a night hunt. Fortunately the area did not have anyone around so I was free to search undisturbed, or at least that was what I thought at the time. After taking my flashlight and blackberry with me I stumbled in the dark hoping for a quick grab and go. Unfortunately this was not the case and the geocache was well hidden in an area of multiple hiding spots. About ten minutes of searching and I see a car pull up and park behind mine. I was pretty sure it was not the police and I suspected a high probability that it would be my FTF nemesis Ikraynak.

"Ian, is that you", I called into the darkness. The return snickering told me that my suspicions were correct.

We combined forces and began searching the rather large, target rich geocache site. Another five or so minutes go by and I spot the geocache.

"Found it", says I.

Ian retrieved the small geocache and we looked to see if our efforts were in vain or not. We were not disappointed this time and the FTF was ours.

After a short chit-chat it was time for both of us to head off for work. Funny how we both get so much enjoyment trying to beat each other out in being first. That I personally had even more fun looking together with a common goal. Well okay I technically DID find it first anyways but that is not the point... TeeHEE... Until the next time.

FTF - What The Heck Was I Thinking?

(note above my shoe bottom left and the ice just above it -HHH)

I am typing this rather interesting little story to you in wet and sandy socks. My work shoes are drying next to my desk and though quite damp, no longer dirty from my geocaching escapades of yesterday. The reason they are no longer dirty, yet moist and a bit sandy is due to my obsession with geocaching FTFs or First To Finds. If you read my blog on a regular basis you will see many postings of a happy smiling me showing clean log sheets of some cache with either my name on top or soon to be signed. Today was a smidge different than my normal routine thus the wet shoes, socks and my right pant leg.

Let me tell you of my adventure. It started out innocent enough. I received an email last night telling me of a new geocache that posted in the Creedmoor, NC area. 1208Zuni a geocaching friend of mine was the owner. Zuni is known for some downright crazy geocache hides and I prepared myself for the possibility that this would be a tougher find.

It’s 6:45 am and I pull up to the cache site. It is on a fairly busy road looking over a stream which goes under the road itself. The base of the stream is a good twelve feet down with a steep snow covered slope. We had just received several inches of rare March snow that still had not melted and it was only about 27 degrees out. I figured out a way to get down but it would take a bit of a walk around to accomplish, no problem. About half way down was when the police showed up. I waved, he waved, I thought to myself, “well – shyte!”.

“That your car”, the officer asked from his rolled down car window.

“yessir”, says I.

“Whatcha doing down there”, says he.

“Why Geocaching Sir, there is a new one that was just placed here and I’m trying to find it. Is that a problem”, says I hoping this will end quickly yet without being arrested.

“No problem, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t an abandoned vehicle. Have fun”, with that he rolled up his window and drove away.

“Well that was interesting”, I thought to myself. No big schpeel about what geocaching was and I still had time to find it before heading off to work. Cool!

With the threat of incarceration behind me and after a bit of bushwhacking I reached the small stream and though there was a lot of vegetation there were two areas to cross if I was careful. Checking my BlackBerry and Geocache Navigator I realized that the cache was indeed on the other side of the bubbling waters. After making sure that my phone would not end in the drink I made a leap that did not end in tragedy. Being in work shoes that is always a good thing. Actually I was pleased that I had not already broken my neck after walking downhill on the snow covered weeds.

The cache site was a concrete spill drain that controlled the stream itself. There were several hiding areas for a micro which required me to stand on some ice covered rocks while straddling the hillside. This was not a very comfortable way to be for a rather girth prone person such as I am. As I poked and prodded with my now frozen fingers I held a wonderful cataclysmic thought in my head of landing straight on my butt into the icy cold water behind me. I could feel my legs ache from the cold and precarious position while trying to keep my balance. Minutes seemed to slip away as my frustration level increased. Maybe it was in the stump that was six feet up and out of reach, maybe in one of the drain holes that I could not see far enough into? Drat, where could it be? As usual just before I give up I look and see the well camouflaged geocache.

SUCCESS! I quickly but carefully take out my Blackberry and snap some photos all the while remembering that I was standing over water. I sign the clean sheets and put everything back where it was. That was when I heard something rustling about 30 feet above me and to my left. I look up and there was Zuni smiling ear to ear.

“Did you find it”, he asked.

Now any other time I would think that a 300+ fat man straddling the side of a hill and standing on frozen rocks over a flowing stream may have caused a slightly different reaction from anyone else. Except Zuni knows me and he knows what I have done in the past for a FTF so this was pretty much business as usual in the geocaching world.

“Yup all signed and put back, oh, and you suck Zuni”, I said with a grin. He laughed.

Zuni came back over to make sure everything was in place for whoever was fool hardy enough to try and find this particular geocache after all the rain and snow. We chatted a bit and he told me that another geocache will be opening in the area soon. First thought, cool. Second thought, getting my keester off of these rocks and onto solid ground before something bad happens.

Zuni had to take off himself so we said our good-byes and I tried to figure out the best way to get back to my car. The route Zuni originally took to get down here was way too snow covered and steep for me to try in my work shoes. So I decided to go back the way I came. Unfortunately on my attempt going back I slipped and landed on a sand bar like ground which looked at the time rather firm. It wasn’t and my foot sunk down to above my ankle in thick quicksand muck. The cold was intense and as I jumped from right foot to left the second foot placement was not much better. It too found a soggy spot though not as deep but deep enough to soak that foot as well. It is amazing how your mind just disengages when you realize that you screwed up big time. All I could think of as I trotted up the now even slipperier path to my car was how the water washed away the red North Carolina dirt off my shoes from yesterday. Needless to say I could not wait to get into work and at my desk where I can hide till everything dries.

All of this for a First To Find. I wonder if Zuni’s other geocache has published yet? Hmmmmm.

But I’m NOT Obsessed…. Right?

It Is The Place To Be

Had to smile big time when I put this FTF find together in Oxford, NC. Drove past it a hundred times and never realized it was there. Now where is Zsa-Zsa?

The Potty Talk Series Continues

This was number one of number two FTFs in the Creedmore, NC area. But I digress...

This morning brought a laugh and for a Monday that is saying something. I had read last night of three possible FTFs (First To Finds) on my route to work. The first which was closest to my house would have been the target to go for if it weren't for the two other FTF possibilities up by where I work. So I decided to go for the two near work and somebody else can snatch the close to home. Anywho about halfway to work I get a phone call from a fellow geocacher asking if I went for the FTF near my home. I thought it quite humorous that they wanted to know if it was worth going for the early morning find based on my actions. I'm not THAT obsessed am I? Oh who asked you ;)

As I approached Creedmore, NC I had everything ready for me to pounce on the first of two. Sure enough I made the quick park and grab with little effort yet still noted the unusual geocaching container. That TML sure is one sick evil dude! He assures us that the "container" is not a retread but I still want to wash my hands after putting it back. Icky.

Number two of this morning's FTFs was only another mile or so away and I made quick work of it and signed the clean sheetz.

Doing geocaching really perks me up in the morning and gets the juices flowing. See now all I can do is think about TML's geocache... Gotta go wash my hands again... yuck.

Early Morning FTF on the Way To Work

Imagine if you will a 300+ pound fat guy climbing up an eight foot tall 80 degree angled berm, with evergreens, at night. What could happen?

Granted the large semi nearby made for good cover so security didn't have to come a looking and that is always a good thing.

Overall I had a great time scurrying in the dark and chilly temps whilst climbing on all fours up the rather steep and dirt covered hill. The exhilaration is really something in situations like this. While I am going through it in my head I am calm yet excited to make the find. My hands shake a bit and I'm not sure if it is because of the cold or the thrill of the hunt. Either way I am smiling ear to ear in early morning dark and would be hard pressed to want to be anywhere else at that moment. After a quick search I was able to add another FTF to my ever increasing collection.

Signed the log and headed off to work. Good Times.

Java and a Nightime FTF

Morning. Add another FTF to my ever growing list.

I saw this one pop on the radar just before midnight last night. Came really close to just going out and getting it but I decided to take the chance and wait until after I dropped off my daughter at the school bus stop before heading out into the darkness to find this beastie.

This nighttime find had me freezing my fingers looking under all sorts of rocks. Luckily the area was pretty muggle free with only a few cars driving by.
After about ten minutes of scouting via flashlight in hand I soon was signing the clean log sheetz.

Tried out a new coffee brand this morning and a FTF ta boot - I'm lov'n it!

News Flash!!!! Thought that I had lost my good flashlight on this little adventure. I was so into getting the log signed and on my way to work that I did not notice the lack of my illumination tools.

It sat there all day and I gave it about one chance in ten that it would still be there by the time I made it there.

Bingo, sitting right out into the open and in perfect condition.. Bad Flashlight, Bad.

Meet-Ups With Fellow Geocaching Seekers

I was out on my day off trying to get a couple of FTFs that were near my house.

As I approached the geocache ground zero in a gas station parking lot I noticed another car just sort of sitting there. Well I have a game plan today and wanted to head out to another hunting ground so I took a chance to see if I could actually find this cache without raising too much attention.

As I exited my vehicle I was greeted by a big smile and a question that I immediately knew that I was in the company of friends.

"Is your Geocache Navigator working?", he said with a grin.

"Now how would he know that I had...", thought I and then he told me.

"I saw some of your videos", he said.

I introduced myself and he told me his Geocaching handle was Ikraynak.

I looked down at my BlackBerry and it seemed to be working just fine. I stated that since mine is working to give it a shot and find this cache. We looked at the description and had a pretty good clue the area to search. My first choice came up empty but Ian hit it on his first try. As we were signing the log we talked more about our sudden dependence on Geocache Navigator and how it has made geocaching so much easier.

It was great to talk with Ikraynak and to meet up with his very nice four legged caching buddy. It just goes to show you never know who you are going to meet up with and I am so glad that I do. Being able to put a handshake and a face with a name makes geocaching so much more fun.

Oh and a "Curse You" (clenched fist to the air) to Cachuman for beating us to the FTF. What you sleeping on your monitor lately? ;)

Placement of Geocache Near Owner's Home - I Don't Think So

I know that putting a geocache on your home property can be a really cool thing to do. You get to see and many times meet other geocachers as they snoop around looking for the hide. This in many cases is fine to do but only if the hide is extremely easy and obvious or in an area that the neighbors won't think you are a burglar.

Had one today that popped up less than a mile from my house. Took off like a shot to go find it and after a little bit of stumbling I realized that the geocaching find was on private property. Double checked the description and sure enough it stated that it was and also to mind the plants. Well the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I thought if it was in plain sight and could be done quickly I would give it a whack. Walking on their lawn I started looking around. My GPS of course decided to start bouncing the closer I was to the actual homestead. "Great", I think to myself. I triangulated the best that I could and checked around some bushes. I could hear cars driving by on the road behind me and I started getting the heebi-jeebies.

That was it for me, I was too close to the house and didn't want to go behind the bushes and the house to look. So with a quick shrug I am calling this one. Shame I would have loved another FTF but not this time.

Once again shows that a good geocaching placement is important and you need to think of the finders when you place it..

Your Thoughts?

Oh Look Another FTF - I Just Love Them

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to find four FTFs (First To Finds). Quite an experience for me and I enjoyed the challenge and anticipation of signing the clean log sheets. Today I was told that a fifth geocache was published later in the day near the ones I had found. I was surprised that at a day later no one had yet taken claim. Well I could not stand for that - to the geocache-mobile!

Sliding down the geo-pole and then forcing a 300+ pound man into skin tight spandex (now isn't that an image) I was off like a herd of turtles. This geocache was about half a mile from where you park and just on the edge of a large and popular lake. Even with the sun setting and behind the clouds I was confident to make the quick hike, find the geocache, sign the log, put all the swag back into the geocache, put the log in the little baggie it came in, put the baggie with the log into the geocach and close the lid... Oh and put the geocache back where it was and still get home for dinner. Visions of cold fish and broccoli still fresh in my mind and a sore back from yesterday.. But I digress.

The hike went quick but the wind had picked up as it blew through the tall pines. I could see the lake in the distance as I walked down the deserted street and the terrain suddenly turned very swampy. Not that suffocating feeling you get in a thick swamp but the creep factor was definitely there. Yesterday the sun was out and the sky was full of frolicking birds and prancing white tale deer. Today all you heard was the wind and the creaking of the trees. Because the area was muddy and wet with laying water everywhere you just know that there were some good creepy crawlies around so I took extra care as I closed in on the geocache. It was hidden as directed in the description and I made short work of the log and replacement of the cache. Took some cool photos of the lake and surrounding areas and it was back to the car I went.

Just as I was entering the last leg of the hike the sun came out for just a moment casting my robust shadow before me. I really must get to the gym more often.. The morale of the story? Well there isn't one. I drove home after finding my car where I left it which is always a good thing and I had home made fajitas for dinner and watched Dirty Jobs. I still think I will end up on the couch but that is because of the potential tick factor. Now where are my aspirins???
Oh and I do love finding FTFs. It brings out the really competitive side of me. The End.
